2013-2014 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
did you take biochem lab? I called and they were saying how all that behavioral science and biochem LAB and lecture were required before matriculation. ............... she said no subsitutions either. I m having a hard time believing her b.c she seems like she doesnt know what shes saying.
Straight from U Miami website: "Biochemistry Lab is recommended, but not required."

Everything is on this page if you want to peruse it: http://admissions.med.miami.edu/md-programs/general-md/prerequisites

Edit: it looks like there is a biochem lab requirement starting in the next application cycle ("If you are applying after June 1, 2014, a course in biochemistry with a lab will be required"), but not for this year.

From my understanding the airhead on the phone said that we need those classes before we matriculate. not the next cycle.

It might be worth calling again and trying to talk to someone different - at the least, it sounds like lady you talked to didn't have all her facts straight.

As far as English courses, I read somewhere that English-department coursework can be substituted with "Literature courses". I'm not 100% sure if literature just means writing-intensive, or if it has to be an actual course that focuses on a specific culture's literature. So U Miami does take substitutions on the English courses, but it might be worth asking how stringent they are on what substitutions they allow - again, if you can get ahold of someone at the admissions office who knows what they're talking about .

The application specially says orgo 2 OR biochem, so I'm assuming u can have either including a lab. I don't think biochem with lab is a prerequisite yet, otherwise the secondary would not have let you choose between the 2. But yes, calling to verify is probably the best option.

She didnt even know how the prerequisite page looked like!!. 😡

I decided to email them and ask that question. Hopefully they get back to me because I m not starting this secondary until then lol.

When they say "Do not replicate your AMCAS personal statement", does that mean it's okay to copy/paste from our Work/Activities section?

I'm worried copy/paste will look bad, but it's literally the same question (even marked as "most meaningful"), and I don't have any meaningful experiences that I left off AMCAS all together.

Thanks 🙂

This is going to be an extremely long secondary.

do you think a graduation picture of me in my cap and gown is fine? Or is that not "professional" enough?

haven't received the secondary yet.. MCAT 35 GPA >3.9 OOS. anyone in the same boat?

I have a question for those working on the secondary, seeing that the application autofilled a lot of the demographic info and other details, I was a bit surprised when it selected yes for the question Have you ever been convicted, pled guilty or nolo contendere, had adjudication withheld or prosecution deferred, in connection with a crime?

Did this happen to anyone else, obviously I changed the option to "No," as I have not had any connection with any sort of crime, but I'm confused because for the question above "...institutional action.." the autofill was no (correctly so!),

Have others had the same experience with autofill for the second question?

Thanks and good luck 🙂

Ha, yep, I noticed that too. That's one way to give a line-toeing pre-med a little jolt of adrenaline. There are some typos in their secondary, so I figured it was just a little oversight on their part for the autofill to be "yes." I switched it to "no" and moved along 🙂

Yes, but if you click in the prerequisite link it gives you it says it is required if u are applying after 6/14 and the lab is recommended not required.
Righto - the prerequisite page says "Prior to January 1, 2014, a course in biochemistry is strongly recommended and may be substituted for one semester of organic chemistry. If you are applying after June 1, 2014, a course in biochemistry with a lab will be required."

No lab required until next year's cycle, it seems.

Thanks for double checking me, thats a relief! no Bio Chem Lab

Anyone know the additional prompts for the MD/MPH program? I want to get started on those before I get the secondary, looked around but no luck 🙁

So how do we enter this coursework if the labs are separate from the lecture classes. For example, to complete a year of organic chemistry, I had to enroll in five different classes (lectures and labs were separate classes). However, there are only three spaces to list organic chemistry classes. Any suggestions?

Edit: to make matters more complicated, I took one of the lab classes in a different year from the lecture classes.

Admission Committee is not stupid. Just enter the courses and once they go through your transcript, they will see you have taken the labs.

How much did you all write for some of those optional essays? I really can't find a way to write 500 words about my participation in organized sports...

I went with a simple list format of my activities in sports and a short paragraph, 1-2 sentences on each (how long I have been doing it, how many times a week--things of that nature).

If I were trying to fill up the 500 word limit on the optional questions I answered, I think that'd be way to much.

EDIT: Is there no one out there applying MD/MPH? I'm trying to get a head start on the separate MD/MPH questions, if anyone with the secondary can see them let me know. Thanks!

Tewpac, here are the additional MPH essays. I believe they still have the 500 word limit. Good luck 🙂

Please describe any experience you have had in public health - -this could be experience in the field, in training, in education or other related experience.

Please describe how you envision you would use the public health training provided in the joint MD/MPH in your future career as a physician.

Is there anything else you want to tell us about your interest in the MD/MPH program?

Thank you sir (or ma'am)! My Miami secondary just got so much longer haha.

Just submitted that monster secondary! Did anyone else have a weird glitch when you were allowed to preview the application right before submission? It posted my travel experience essay at the beginning of the application in the header space, but it was also in the normal travel experience box too.... I'm hoping this is a glitch on their end because I tried to correct it several times but I was unable to find a remedy.
Anyway phew feels good to finish! Here's to some alma mater love!!

So do you guys think Miami reads your primary app at all? what's the purpose for asking for the EXACT same info on the secondary?

I know! So frustrating! I have so little motivation to do this secondary.

Was there a place to upload a picture on the secondary? Or do you have to email it? Did I miss something?

Oh wow, I completely missed the part about the photo too. Viewing their instructions in Chrome makes that part of the document appear as a blank white box for some reason.

soo...how many people actually do all or most of the optional essays. They seem rather tedious and in my opinion doesn't really add much to your application. But having a box there for hobbies makes it seem like I have/should put something in there...

When in doubt, fill it out! ; )

I'm not done with this secondary yet, but I plan on doing 2 of the optional essays.

This is weird… I'm an IS resident who designated Miami in May and submitted my AMCAS on the first day…Haven't gotten the secondary yet (can't totally complain cause this one is longgggg.) Anyone else in this situation?

I also submitted first day and was worried; however, I received my secondary yesterday. Chin up! Hopefully you will receive yours in the near future.

I think I have put this secondary off long enough, but I have a question. There is one box to list clinical experiences and another to list volunteer. There is obviously some overlap because many of my volunteer experiences were clinical experiences. Did anyone just copy and past to have the same entry/description in box of these boxes?

Also, how much of a description is everyone writing for these activities? 1-2 sentences or 5-7 sentences?

So my status now says "your application has been reviewed by the admissions committee. Applicants will be invited to interview based upon their point total from the Committee review. Applications that have been reviewed and scored by the Committee will be considered for interviews during the entire interview season"

I wonder what this means??

I have accessed the secondary once already. However, now that I am ready to submit it when I put in my AMCAS ID and my birthday it tells me, "The requested page could not be found." Does anybody else have this issue?

I think it means we sit and wait to hear back from them. I don't think they've started sending interview invites yet.

How long did it take admissions to process your photo that you sent via email? My letters are marked as received, but for some reason it still states that they are missing my photo...

Anyone else having trouble with the website? I am getting "page not found" when I try to login

I sent in my photo yesterday and am marked complete as of today. I was surprised by how quickly they processed it... Maybe give them another day or two though?

Did they send you an email once they processed it or did you have to check your status on the secondary website?

No email, I just checked my status online. Sorry, I wish I could be more helpful : /
