Why would they tell us to give them a call if we don't hear within seven days? They must be willing to give us an answer within that time frame, right?

The person who told you that you'd hear between now and matriculation must have been messing with your head..
 
If I don't get a call at 5pm, does that mean I'm rejected? I'm confused by this "final decision" status. I guess I'll call within the 7 days...

I think they might interview into March. The last date that they said acceptances are sent out is April 23 on their website.

Does anyone know what happens if you don't get a call from Miami today? I interviewed the first day and it says my status has changed/adcom has come to a final decision on the status page, but I've heard nothing.
 
Congrats to all those accepted!!! Be on the lookout for your official acceptance letter coming next week. I had a veryyyy nice merit scholarship included with mine 🙂

Anyone accepted to MD/MPH?
Did you get accepted to MD and MD/MPH or just one?
 
Back in the day, I was an out-of-state applicant from a large state school with a 4.0 (3.99 at graduation, dang you Neurophysiology!) and 34 MCAT and received 15K x 4 years as well. Made medical school a lot more affordable IMO.

Congrats to all of you who received calls today! Feel free to PM when you have any questions; I know that many of you will have some hard decisions to make in the next few months, and I'd love to help you make the right choice. 😉
 
Congrats to all of you! I'm on the alternate list. Heart-breaking since this was my top choice after my interview.

Don't lose hope! They consider ALL applicants at every admissions meeting. I believe they rank everyone (even alternates) and accept the top 20 candidates.

The M1 student from our tour said she was accepted a week after being placed on the waitlist.

I believe they offer between $5k-$30k a year, in $5k increments. Not sure how many offers they make out of the accepted pool, but about 50 people in each class (out of about 200) got at least $5k.

I'm OOS and had a 3.91/34, and was offered $20k/year. Definitely a lot more generous than I had expected.

If I remember correctly, the median stats for accepted students is 3.80/32 (both MD and MD/MPH combined), while the matriculated averages are 3.77/32.6 for MD and 3.57/31.0 for MD/MPH.

I'm pretty sure this is what I heard at my interview.. but someone else should confirm.

The admissions meeting dates are on the hubspring app. The next two are Nov 20 & Dec 11.

Anyone accepted that interviewed October 4 or later? I haven't heard anything, but I also don't have the "decision has been reached" status.

Alternates, were you notified of your alternate status via email?

hey guys this is my first post. I attended the Oct 4th interview, yet i dont even have a status change. actually, it reads:

"Your application to the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine has been reviewed by the Admissions Committee and selected for an Interview. You should have received an e-mail and selected a date for the Interview. If you need additional assistance, please contact the Admissions Office at 305-243-3234 or e-mail [email protected] Congratulations and we look forward to meeting you."

...but i had my interview already.

Admissions office said they review each person on the alternate list, and they can be removed and accepted at the next meeting.

I would contact admissions. I interviewed October 4 and mine says that my interview is complete and decisions are usually made 4-6 weeks post interview.
 
Anyone know if we should be expecting an email with more info? Or is it just in the mail?

thank you! i did, the woman did indeed confirm that my existence was and still is acknowledged, and to be patient. that's a tall order lady haha. 4 years culminating here
 
For those of you who have already interviewed - my interview's not until January 9th, but I was wondering what the experience was like! As a Mid-Westerner, East Coast alone feels pretty foreign to me, but East & South? - it feels completely exotic haha. How is the medical school integrated with the surroundings? Does it feel too touristy or rather give a unique edge to the practicing /learning environment? I'm curious and excited about my interview day already 😛

I second that "non-touristy" comment. You really only run into tourists if you hang out on South Beach during Spring Break or in the Emergency Department during Ultra Music Festival. Our city doesn't fit well under the "Southeastern USA" category, either. The South ends in Northern Florida, and the whole "East Coast" stereotype (busy, hurried, fast pace of life) doesn't apply either. Our feel is more of a Latin American / Caribbean blend. It's very unique, it brings a big multicultural flair to our hospitals, and I love it.

By the way, this is coming from someone who grew up and went to college in a small town on the West Coast. 🙂

Also, somebody brought up the MD-MPH program. I can't speak for the curriculum or program, since it's entirely different and separate from the MD one, but I have great respect for the MD-MPH students themselves. They're super active (politically and otherwise), tight-knit, and they do crazy things like organize cabarets and run Tough Mudders together.

Can anyone speak to any outreach for spouses the school offers? I have a wife and two kids and family support is really important to me. Also any suggestions about places to live that are safe for family and kids would be great!

I know that there's a student interest group for parents/married couples. They host events that are kid friendly, like picnics. You're also encouraged to bring your spouse to big social events, like our fall ball (med school prom). Most of the married couples still live in Brickell (as do the majority of the students); if you don't want a condo, there are houses in West Brickell as well.

They have a very nice description of different housing options available in the vicinity of the school. It's on the UMMSM website, under Student activities, I think. Alternatively, I am sure you can contact someone at the school to inquire about it and get first-hand information 🙂.
 
Yes, the housing cost alone seems like it could be a big deterrent to attending Miami.

Accepted two days ago!! So happy🙂 And congratulations to everyone else accepted!!!!For those on the waiting list, hang in there! Remember the admission commitee meets regularly so you could be accepted any time.
I interviewed on october 4th and was called exactly at 5:04 pm on October 23rd, which is the exact day and time they told us--pretty impressed.
Just to clarify, the next steps we need to take now are send an email and a letter to the admissions committee?

I was married prior to starting medical school - no kids, though. I know we have a Med Moms+Dads group or something that gets together, but I've never attended. As for my spouse, I brought him to every social event from Day 1 (not just major events), and he's closer to some of my classmates than I am - he plays in weekly soccer games with a couple of them, for example. Funny enough, he has even shown up for several of my classes and actively asked questions of professors (who seemed a little confused with a "why don't I remember this guy" face as they answered), to the snickers of my classmates.

As for places to live, I wouldn't live near the medical campus (which is cheap - I only pay $1000 for my own place - but not a good, safe place to raise kids) or in Brickell (very "young professional," but pricey). I would look into Coral Gables or Coconut Grove, areas which have lots of parks and families. Many of the attendings own houses in the Coral Gables region, and one of my classmates who had a baby last year rented a place in the Gables.

Lots of free time during years 1 and 2. One cool thing about UM is that they videotape the lectures and attendance at the majority of classes isn't required. Some students continue going to class and benefit from having more individualized interaction with the lecturers; other students choose to skip the classes, watch lectures at 2x speed in the evenings, and instead participate in extracurriculars like research during the day. If you love going to lectures, you'll still have free time. After anatomy, days often end around 2-3 pm.

Research-wise, if you like structured research, you have the ability to graduate with "Research Distinction" or to participate in a Pathway of Emphasis. A lot of students take the time between Year 1 and Year 2 to throw themselves into a project full-time and earn a paper from several intense weeks of dedication.

Also, GUNNERGUNNERGUNNER for thinking about residency applications already. :laugh: (Joking, of course)
 
With that attitude, we're super happy to have you! After a couple of years, several of us started using "gunner" as an endearing term that just means "you work really hard, ace tests and do well in school." I probably should clarify that on these message boards, since that isn't the usual meaning of the word. 😀

In all seriousness, it's great that you're thinking about residency already. Wherever you interview this season, ask about the Step pass rates and residency placements of current students. It should be an important part of your decision.

As for MD-PhD swaps, I know a girl here who realized that she loved research during her first year, and she was able to switch into MD-PhD from straight MD by working with the admin early on.

Our Miami Project to Cure Paralysis has some major stem cell projects going on - you may have been referring to them, but if not, you should definitely check that group out!
 
so i accidentally booked my flight to fort lauderdale since i used southwest and just typed in miami and that's what appeared. (i know.. stupid of me but i don't know anything about florida's geography or cities) So apparently there is a train that runs from fort lauderdale to the tri-rail metro stop in miami; then switch onto the miami metro and get off at the school of medicine stop. is this a reliable transit option? or should i just pay the ~$70 taxi fare from fort lauderdale to miami?
