2013-2014 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
so i accidentally booked my flight to fort lauderdale since i used southwest and just typed in miami and that's what appeared. (i know.. stupid of me but i don't know anything about florida's geography or cities) So apparently there is a train that runs from fort lauderdale to the tri-rail metro stop in miami; then switch onto the miami metro and get off at the school of medicine stop. is this a reliable transit option? or should i just pay the ~$70 taxi fare from fort lauderdale to miami?
Depends on what time your flight is, and how much time you have between when you land and when you need to be on campus. The trirail (first train) usually only runs once every hour (http://www.tri-rail.com/train-schedules/wend.asp) and the metrorail runs about every 10 minutes during peak times, and 20 minutes off peak. Unless there's an unforeseen delay, the trirail is usually always on time

Honestly, in pre-interview jitter mode, if you are going straight from airport to campus, I would pre-arrange a car service. The campus is not the easiest to get to... lots of highways from Ft. Lauderdale.

GO Airport Shuttle from Fort Lauderdale can probably get you to campus for under $30. I used GO and SuperShuttle on a lot of interviews. They'll be faster than the tram-train-metro combo and cheaper than a taxi.

Would any current students be able to PM me or post on the forum the book list for first year? With patience and enough searching, I'm able to get the PDF's for next to nothing (if not free) but I imagine there would be such an extensive list and that it would take some time to get all of them this way....anything to save $$ 🙂 Thanks!

We have a mediafire account that has all the books we (don't) need for free. But nobody reads the books. You're given enough material in lectures, and you're only tested on what's presented to you in lecture. Which is MORE than enough to study, don't you worry. I would get a copy of Netter's Anatomy atlas (or any anatomy atlas, but a hard copy of it) and that's about it. Once school starts, students will be trying to sell you their books for cheap anyway. But it's really unnecessary.

Should we expect acceptance letters/scholarship awards in the mail today? Or later this week?

How long does if take to get a secondary after your Amcas is verifiedl? . I recieved an email saying it had been recieved and they are going to make a decision shortly.

I would like to know as well, I received that email September 23 🙁

Where are you awaiting your mail? I may have to wait some because I'm in New York...

I'm in Ft. Lauderdale so I'm hoping for a speedy delivery! 😀

I got a full tuition scholarship at another school and really want to know how much UM is willing to share 🙄

I think mine came on the Wednesday after I was accepted.

WOW! What school??

Congrats! That's unbelievable!

Thanks so much! I feel honored but I'm interested in a more research-heavy school. Although this offer is soooo tempting, it's possible that I'll give it up for someone else to enjoy 🙂

So, when you get the hard copy acceptance letter in the mail, if you are being offered scholarship money that's when you find out too?

Yes, that's how it came for me. I'm not sure if people were offered scholarships later; it makes sense that there's a redistribution of funds as some people start turning down offers, so just because you don't get it now doesn't mean there isn't hope for you to get it later.

Wow! Mind sharing your stats? (I'm assuming it's a merit scholarship.) I interviewed there on Monday. The scholarship would be the cherry on top!

3.99 sGPA / 35 MCAT

I'm very thrilled to have this opportunity! Might give it up for someone else to enjoy, however.. waiting to hear from other schools!

Hope you hear good news from them too!

Hehe 😛
Honestly, that's incredible. Straight A's in college and maybe what, like an A- somewhere along the way? ::applaud::
I'd never pull that off in college - and thankfully, I'll never have to either 😀

lol well thanks!! Just got the UM acceptance letter, they didn't give me any love in the shape of money though. Oh well! I'm still so thrilled!

Are you still considering turning down the full-ride even thought the U isn't giving you any money?...

Question (applying next year): How strongly does Miami adhere to their two science LOR requirement. Could one argue for a PI to count toward this requirement?

It's still early in the process, and UM could possibly offer me a scholarship later on. The FIU scholarship is truly a blessing, but like I said I'm interested in a research-heavy school and I'm afraid FIU is lacking in that department.

I haven't turned down the acceptance or the scholarship at FIU.. can't make any final decisions at this point- I still have a couple of interviews to attend!

Another question: Can anyone comment on the flexibility of the MPH program? From my understanding, when one goes to school for an MPH they decide to "specialize" in a certain field of public health (health policy, environmental health, biostats, etc.). However, from looking at Miami's MPH curriculum it seems pretty general... Perhaps the specialization comes during the capstone project?

That was my understanding from the presentation at the regional campus. Examples such as doing an externship at the CDC, public health departments, working with underserved areas like a Native American reservation, third world countries etc. But I haven't heard anything official either. If someone offers you more info please share 🙂

Thanks. what was your impression of the regional campus? Is it "easier" to get into one campus over the other? They don't do the MD/MPH only at the regional, do they?

Do they accept in the area emails here?

I don't get why people email about this - what happened to the good old days of getting business done on the phone lol.

Kidding aside, I called FIU to ask them if it was possible to push forward review of my application, so if the committee wanted to invite me for an interview, perhaps it could be done while I was in town for my UMiami interview. II for UMiami on 8/12, II for FIU on 8/14. As long as you are tactful and polite, just call them! (This advice is not specific to UMiami...any school!)

I'm going to do this when i start getting impatient 🙂

II today! It's weird that they ask for 4 interview dates preference... How long does it take for them to send the confirmation email?

Congrats!!! When were you complete??
Thanks! They received/processed my profile picture on Thursday (10/31) so I was completed then.

Also, my status changed from "Currently under review by admissions com" to "Have been reviewed by admissions com" yesterday. Got the email today around 2pm.

I hope you get your II soon! 🙂

Hey guys,
Update on the scholarship front. Spoke with admissions office today and they said that at the present time nobody has be awarded any scholarship money because the scholarship committee has yet to meet. As for additional need-based money, that will not be distributed until after FAFSA 2014 results are delivered and deliberated upon.

Hope this calms some nerves.

Cheers!

Earlier posts show differently. #604 for example.

Earlier posts show differently. #604 for example.

#604 is by a current UM medical student (not an applicant) giving an example for someone who asked about financial aid opportunities for out-of-state students.

To add to my post about scholarships, I'd just like to reiterate that early scholarships are only MERIT based. It is completely possible and likely to receive more financial aid once your FAFSA is processed, and this usually doesn't happen until April

Applying extremly late, but question on the secondary. Does miami need the exact dates from when a experience began till when it eneded? Or just month and year?

i sent my photo to the admissions email address twice and the status site still says that they are missing my photo. did this happen to anyone else?

Takes about a week to get a reply saying the photo was received.

I only did month and year on mine.

"A final decision has been reached by the Admissions Committee..." I guess I'll be hearing back within seven days!

Nice! I've been checking my status page every day for like 2 weeks. It seems like it's taking them a while to reach a decision for me. How long were you on the status that said they were reviewing everything a final time?

I was on that original status that you are describing for about three weeks.

Hey guys I think my status has changed but I cant tell if it acutally did. Before today it was something along the lines of complete and being under review, now its "Your Application to the UM Miller School of Medicine is complete and is currently being reviewed by the Admissions Committee." The thing is that Im almost positive my status learner was in black but now its in green. Anyone experience similar change?
