2013-2014 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Could someone point me in the direction of finding info about the way interviews are run at UM? Possibly someone I could PM?
I'm interviewing pretty late (Dec.) so I'd like to really see what they're going for. appreciate it.

Does the committee automatically give scholarships if you qualify for it based on merit, need, diversity, etc? In other words, you don't have to apply for it right?

No application necessary, but you do need to turn in a FAFSA including your parents' information (I know, I know - even for the married peeps with no parental contribution) to officially receive some of the aid.

And not only do we have an acapella group, we also have a full yearly cabaret!

I interviewed on Oct 18 and remember being told that if we were accepted we would hear back Nov. 20 at 5pm.
Yea I interviewed on 10/18 as well and have yet to hear from them. my status has not changed from "being reviewed". the dean definitely told us we would know by 5 on 11/20... not sure what to make of it or if checking with admissions would be frowned upon

I interviewed the second week of October and am in the same situation.
I emailed admissions and they said I would be reviewed at the meeting in December.

That's good to know, thanks!

So confused. I've had the "Decision has been made" status since Wednesday, but no phone call and no email. What does it mean???

I'm half terrified I'll come home to a nasty rejection letter. I guess I'll just have to endure this mounting anxiety until next Wednesday, being that it'll have been 7 days, and call them up.
The next date acceptances will be sent out is Dec. 11th around 5pm. I believe you will have to wait until then to hear from them so don't freak out even if you do not hear back by next Wednesday. 🙂

I interviewed on Nov.18th and that was what we were told. If you download the app they mentioned in your interview email, it will tell you all the dates acceptances will be sent out. I believe the one after Dec. 11th is Jan 22nd (I KNOW, THAT'S A LOOOOONG TIME!) But after that, it is every 2 weeks.

Hope this calm some nerves for those worrying. 🙂

Also, does anyone know if the MD/MPH program has a separate interview? My interviewer told me I would not have to attend another interview and I added it to my application AFTER the interview. Would be interesting if I had to attend another interview for that.

Hmm it's interesting that they didn't get to some. I'm trying to figure out what it means if they got to me, but I was wait listed. Like do I actually have a chance? This process is so mystifying. Smh.

Whether they got to you or not probably has to do with how fast your interviewer was able to write up his/her report and attend one of the committee meetings. One of the schools I'm waiting on is taking forever and there's been people who've interviewed a month after me who have received a decision. It's all up to how fast the interviewer wants to do it.

That makes sense. You're probably right.

Withdrew from my interview here. Very sad as it was a top choice. But can't compete against my in-state MD tuition. Perhaps for residency. Good luck all!

Texas schools, so naturally, 3x cheaper each year. $15K/year vs. $45K/year

Well, I interviewed October 4th. My status has been this since decisions went out Wednesday last week (possibly earlier but I was too anxious to check it constantly until my resolve broke):

"A final decision has been reached by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine on your application. Contact the admissions ofice if you do not receive a telephone call, an e-mail or a letter within seven days."

I think I'm the only one who hasn't heard anything that's had that status on Nov 20th. Also just realized they typo'd "ofice". Anyway, any of you folks that got in last week receive your letter in the mail yet?

I would go ahead and give them a call about your status tomorrow before they check out for the holidays! I just received my letter yesterday. It may have been a quick delivery for me because I live in Florida though.

Does anyone know whether miami has any pre-interview event the night before? I heard a few of the FL schools do that but don't seem to have received any email info about it from Miami and wanted to confirm. appreciate it.

Anyone remember how much scholarship they offer per year?

Got my letter today. Rejected.

Interviewed OCT 4th.

Looking back to last year's thread, I believe I'm the only person to get a rejection letter and not be "wait listed" post-interview. Crazy. Painful. I must have a serious personality problem. Time to reflect on what I'm doing here.

You contact them to ask about why they rejected you/advice for potentially reapplying??

I would definitely try calling or emailing them to see why they felt you weren't right for their school. I believe you are probably a great person academically and personally since you were offered an interview, but it may just be something you said or did in your interview. Definitely not your fault, no one is born a great interviewee. Just gotta learn from our mistakes and keep going. I trust you will get in somewhere, keep your head up! 🙂

How selective are they when inviting for a secondary app?

Actually I think they are selective. Not sure how selective tho
From their website: "Most US citizens and permanent residents of the US will be invited to complete a Supplemental (Secondary) Application." Must not be a very stringent screen if most are invited.

Does anyone know if Miami responds to in the area calls/emails? I'm from NY and have interviews at USF and FAU in the same week in January. I was really hoping I would be able to interview at Miami at the same time. It would save me another expensive trip to Florida.

FINALLY a status change!

"Your Application has been reviewed by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Applicants will be invited to interview based upon their point total from the Admissions Committee review. Applicants who have been reviewed and scored by the Admissions Committee may be notified that they have been selected for an interview between September and April."

Have there been any noticeable patterns after this status pops up? *hoping for an ii*!!

I still have:

"Your Application is currently under review by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine."

Have had this status since August.
Same here, although I'm MD/PhD:
"Your application to the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine MD/PhD Program is complete and is currently being reviewed by the MD/PhD Program Admissions Committee."

I had that status update last night, and when I checked my status again this morning (i know, i know), it changed to "congratulations, you have been selected to interview...". I still haven't received the actual email invite though but I called them and scheduled it haha. So I would say, check it constantly. 🙂

SO EXCITING!! Congrats to you! This gave me a tiny bit of hope 🙂 I have been complete since July, so any type of progress is, in my opinion, positive.

+1!

Just checked my status post-interview and it has changed to something like a final decision has been reached by the admissions committee. Contact the admissions office if you don't hear within 7 days by phone email or mail. I am not sure when my status changed to this, so I called the admissions office and they told me I would be notified following the adcom meeting on Dec. 11. Only a few more days of waiting I hope!

I had this status change a few days ago but haven't heard anything or had any other changes since.

I finally got a "final decision made" status. Gotta wait another week to see what that decision is....

Complete early August and still under review. Anyone else on the same boat? What does it mean if this status hasn't changed for such a long time?

Is there a facebook group for the class of 2018? 🙂 Not sure if someone has already asked.

Sent in an email a couple days ago. I'll follow up with a phone call if they don't reply.

Anyway, thanks for the positivity. Felt pretty bad for a couple days, but ultimately this rejection has been a long needed wake up call. I realized I'd been paralyzed with anxiety waiting to hear good news from any med school. Time to get back to living life and stop worrying about things now out of my hands.

Biochemist, it is such a great outlook. I hope you get good news from somewhere, the best of luck to you!

So my interviewer at UM gave me his personal email card and I sent a thank you email to him the day after the interview. However UM also did provide a mailing address that we can use to contact the interviewer. Was wondering if it would be a good idea to send my interviewer a hand-written note or some chocolates or something.

Did not work for me, but it may for you. Who knows.

If you have already emailed the interviewer, I would say the time for a handwritten note has passed. Just my $0.02.
As for the chocolates, I recommend you send them to the below address:

BurberryDoc
New York Medical College
Department of Physiology, BSB 609A
40 Sunshine Cottage Road
Valhalla, NY 10595

Dark, please.

But you're an MS-0. How can that be your address already?

There is very little keeping me from moving to Miami 🙂
Can't see why anyone would choose u miami these days as it has major financial problems right now due to an overpayment for a hospital and mismanagement of staff..
Layoffs of 900 people.. Internal problems affecting leadership and possible student shutouts from hospital conflicts. Got accepted Ly and turned it down after speaking with then current students and faculty. If its your only choice that's understandable but..

^-- lol there's more effective ways to get off the alternate list at U Miami than trying to persuade SDNers from attending the school.
