2013-2014 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

the problem with the theory of top 20 every time is that there are 9 total decision release dates...that's 180 total acceptances.
in reality, there are about 500 interviewed, 150 that matriculate, and just over 300 that are accepted

so what happens to the other 120+ interviewed (300-180)?

based on my understanding and what dean weisman said- those additional people are accepted in may- after many people let go of their other acceptances to different universities.

great. safe to assume that if we haven't heard anything by new and interviewed in nov, we are going to get an alternate list email tomorrow morning?

Alternate list. I am now totally convinced that this entire process is a ****ing crapshoot. My numbers are great, I've been accepted to higher rank schools, and my interviewer straight up told me that "I have nothing to worry about" and that he will take care of me. He also suggested that I will get a scholarship to this school.......and now the alternate list wtf?

Absolute randomness, it seems. I got into U of Michigan, but even an intereview at U of Miami. Go figure. Feel your pain, but you have a great acceptance, albiet colder climate.

If I was supposed to hear back yesterday, but still haven't been alternate listed.... What does that mean?

+1

Correction: just got the alternate list email

It is a crapshoot. I've been rejected flat out from much lower ranked schools than UMiami, and I've been accepted to better schools than my MCAT/GPA would suggest. The member of the ADCOM at UMiami who interviewed me had a similar life story as mine, and there's the "luck" factor. It's highly subjective, but in the end, the schools are also looking for fit - so while numbers are great, there are other intangibles that make this process impossible to predict. Congratulations on your other acceptances though - it sounds like you won't need UMiami to become a great physician 🙂

What are the chances of coming off of a wait list at Miller? Do updates or LOIs help? Anyone who has been wait listed but got in later want to shed some light?

Just going to say that this was the most ridiculously chill interview ever and the physician I interviewed with seemed to absolutely love every answer I gave. AKA I'm getting rejected.

Have faith in yourself!

I'd had the same experience but I was accepted.

Edit: That seemed more gloating than I intended. Just meant that you can have that experience and be accepted. Sucks to wait for those dates, but at least Miami has the dates posted.

Good luck

I haven't heard/seen much of anything about a facebook group for accepted students. I'm relocating (probably like most) to Miami and am hoping to find 1 or 2 roommates to share an apartment with, something close to the metrorail. I plan on attending second look weekend and hope to scope out some apartments around then. If you are also looking to share an apartment, PM me and tell me about yourself and we can see if we might be compatible roommates! Important Note: I am allergic to cats!

So I've been waitlisted. At this point, what makes sense to do?

Before the Jan. 22nd notification:
I sent in an update regarding my grades, an event that happened in one of my activities and included a few lines about how much I was interested in UM.

After the Jan 22nd notification:
I sent in another rec letter. I was also thinking about maybe writing a letter of interest which included what I found attractive on the day of my interview at UM.

Does this make sense?

From what I recall at the interview here, Dean Weisman said they want updates even if you are accepted. So, if I were in your shoes, I would send as many pertinent and substantial updates as possible.

Accepted MD/MPH program, So stoked! I will definitely be attending.
If there is not a facebook group yet I can make one?

There will be a Facebook group for those who have been accepted. Admissions will give the list to a couple of fellow MS1s who will invite you. Don't worry about housing and all that stuff as it is still way too early to start looking. Just relax and enjoy the fact that you're going to medical school next year.

How do they do this? I have privacy settings on my Facebook, so do they just email a link to accepted students via the email address provided on our application? Any idea when they will begin contacting accepted students about this?

They will email you. I don't know when they'll start the group, but I wouldn't worry about it.

Interview invite today! 32, 3.95, IS. My first of the cycle, I'm ecstatic even though it is pretty late in the cycle and I face an uphill battle.

I would really really appreciate it if anyone could provide any details regarding the interview day at Miami, and any advice for interview day. You can reply to this or PM me!

Also, I am not able to select my date on the website using the link that they provide in the email (which just takes me to the login page). The login page still looks the same. Anyone had the same experience?

CONGRATS to all those students who have been accepted! And to those of you on the alternate list, don't give up hope yet. There is so much movement on that list to be made! Just wanted to address a couple of things for some of you.

1. It's still early for a Facebook group. The point of the group is to meet your future classmates (and post distracting links during exam weeks, which is what is going on in our group right now). Since most people haven't committed to a school yet, there's really no reason to start the group. Our class representatives will e-mail you all with instructions on how to join the group once it's made.
2. In addition to the Facebook group, there will be a roommate google doc. Most people met their roommates at second look, but for anyone who can't attend/doesn't hit it off with someone, the doc will allow you to find a roommate.
3. You really don't need to be thinking about housing until after second look anyway (mid April). I think I found my apartment at the end of May, signed my lease in the middle of June, and moved in July 1st (only because I wanted to come down and party with the current MS2s all summer, which I'd highly recommend).
4. Speaking of second look--GO! It was one of my favorite experiences and definitely what sold me on UM. If you can, stay for the weekend. Reach out to some current students (who you'll meet during the day at second look) and make plans to hangout over the weekend. You won't regret it, guaranteed.
5. ENJOY THIS TIME. I really can't emphasize this enough. When anatomy starts in August.....well I won't taint you. Just know that medical school is a LOT of work, and this truly is the best time for you all!

Again, congrats everyone! If you have any questions feel free to PM me. I'll be in Key West this weekend for our Lower Keys Health Fair, but I'll try to respond as soon as I can.

Congrats!! Did you happen to have a previous status for awhile such as "under review" or "has been reviewed"? Also, when were you complete?!

Thanks ewelling! I had been on the "your application has been reviewed and scored" status for quite some time. I was complete since like mid-August haha. Surprised that I got an invite, but still not able to select a date! Maybe they accidentally sent me an invite? lol

Thanks for the hope! I have similar stats and have had that status since around August as well.

Best of luck, I doubt it was an accident!!

The date picking system is glitchy. Call the admissions office and get them to officially sign you up for a date.

Also CONGRATS! The interview is really relaxed and you will love it!!

Thanks ewelling! Turns out it wasn't an accident, I did call admissions earlier today, and boy is this short notice, but I'm interviewing on February 3rd, this coming monday! And my voice is half-lost! haha, i need my voice back, otherwise this is going to be one tough interview!

Did exactly as you said, and I'm now interviewing on Feb 3rd!

Congrats on getting the interview! I'm also interviewing on the 3rd. Best of luck! Did you manage to get any tips on Miami's interview or the environment that day? I've heard nothing but "super chill" so far.

When will the acceptance package come? It's been a week, I hope it didn't get lost in the mail!

It's definitely not chill. The interviewer actually said it was going to be casual and then proceeded to read from a list of arbitrary scenario based questions? It was weird

There are scenario questions, but it's still relaxed in tone. I had a few answers where my interviewer redirected my thought, but he was never confrontational. Be prepared for the standard questions (why medicine, strengths/weaknesses, why miami) and get ready to answer some straight-forward scenario questions. The key to those is to make the hypothetical patient's well-being the very top priority in your thought process, and everything else follows.

There are really no right or wrong answers. They just want to see how you handle yourself. I think as long as you answered confidently and reasonably, they wouldn't give you a negative mark. When I answered the questions, I always gave a little explanation with an example. Don't worry about it too much (unless you said something along the lines of "I don't think poor people deserve healthcare. They should be refused every service if they can't pay upfront. I know I will get into medical school, don't even question it, etc etc," then you should be fine.) My UG advisers always told me to be neutral on every controversial topic, but I took a stand during my interview (yes, I am talking about the ACA). I think my personal statements/essays were dripping with support towards one side and if I just said I am neutral, then he would have known that I was bs-ing.

I always find it helpful to create small talk- ask them how long they have worked for the school, if they are a professor, etc. I especially like it when the interviewer walks you to the room and back (instead of just waiting in the room for you) because it gives you an opportunity to chat casually without digressing from the "formal" interview.

Best of luck!

Nope, I've only read about it on this thread and getting the same vibe as you are getting! See you on Monday!

Just got a letter offering me a merit scholarship! It came in a separate, small envelope. (It's weird because I did not get my acceptance letter yet.)

Congrats! Did you get an acceptance call though?

I got the acceptance call on Jan.22 and the email the following day. I left to interview in another state and came back to a scholarship letter! Had I gotten this earlier, I wouldn't have gone to my other interview. I still have yet to receive the actual acceptance letter with the "conditions of acceptance" page though.

Status has been at "your application is currently under review" for months. When does the interview season end for UM? Not looking so good for me :/

Still waiting to get a status change, been under review for a while now. Is there still a chance to get an interview this late in the season?
