2013-2014 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

Still waiting to get a status change, been under review for a while now. Is there still a chance to get an interview this late in the season?

They interview until April, so I would say yes 🙂

I've got my fingers crossed for an II as well, no matter how late in the game it is!

That's reassuring, I'll be crossing my fingers a well best of luck to both of us

Less than 2 days till another admissions committee meeting. Is it unrealistic to wish to come out of the waitlist on this date? (waitlisted at the last adcom meeting).

I'm in the same boat. Fingers crossed for us both!!

Sooo I interviewed here and I applied to both the MD only and the MD/MPH dual program. On my portal it says that a final decision has been made on just the MD/MPH program. Is that typical? Is it two different admissions committees that decide?
Also if it says a final decision is made... does that mean I will find out tomorrow because that is one of the designated dates on the mobile app or does it mean that I wont find out until both programs are decided on or does it really mean nothing at all? Any light that anybody could shed if they had a similar situation would be appreciated.

Nice! Congrats, do you mind sharing your stats?

33/3.97 (science 3.96)

I honestly think that they look at the complete package because I have been stalking this thread from the beginning and it seems as if some people with much higher stats didn't get one (They could have gotten one later in the cycle already, Idk). Thus, even if your stats is a lower, you still have a good chance of getting one. I know the Dean said they give you points for everything in the process- interview, stats, ps, secondary essays, activities, etc etc, and they add all points up and scholarship committee uses your score to determine if they will give you a scholarship. (I answered every question on the secondary and was up to the word limit for most of them. Except for research- which I have none of. Lol.)

Edit: I have a great GPA, but my MCAT is just in the average range... I believe UM's avg is 32.5ish.

I think there will be some people called up from the alternate list tomorrow. They accept top 20 from the list every adcom meeting and since it has been only 2 weeks since last meeting, there couldn't possibly be 20 applicants that get put in front of everyone in the list in only 2 weeks worth of interviews.

Do only admitted students receive invitations to Second Look or are waitlisted applicants invited also? Just got an invitation and not sure if it's a glitch or if it's any indication about my status.

Same situation just received second look email invite. Was supposed to hear decision either Feb 5 or Feb 19

How do you know that you're waitlisted? When did you hear? Perhaps Second Look invites go out in batches and it doesn't mean anything.
They emailed me on the last decision date that I was on the alternate list.

Just a heads up- This may help some of you with this question! I got the call from them for my acceptance on Jan. 22 (designated date), but my scholarship letter was written on January 17th which leads me to believe that they may not rank and accept people ONLY on the designated acceptance dates. However, I was supposed to hear back in December and got the email saying I will be postponed until January because they didn't get a chance to review my complete file. (I interviewed mid Nov).

My point: You may be accepted already! (But they may be waiting until tmr to call you) 🙂

It doesn't make sense they would send it to all of the people they waitlist. Unlike most schools, UM doesn't reject people after an interview and all those who interviews will get waitlisted until the very end- which means EVERYONE who interviewed would get an invitation to second look (if that were the case).

Thank you for the response--and congratulations! I'm trying really hard not to get too excited in the event that it's a glitch. UMiami is my first choice.

I would only assume you get the second look email if you are accepted though.. right?

That's what I am assuming as well- person asking the question above didn't get the acceptance call yet and the other was on the last wait list.

(I think some schools invite both accepted and wait-listed applicants if the have a traditional, set in stone waitlist they create towards the end of the cycle, unlike the rolling one UM has.)

Yea that makes sense. Dam, looks like I'm not getting in tomorrow either. Gotta wait 2 more weeks ugh

I received the second look invitation as well. I just checked my application status, and it says a final decision has been made, which was not the case when I checked a couple of days ago. I am trying very hard not to get my hopes up, but.... what? I thought the committee only met on Wednesdays?

anyone know how many people are on the admissions committee? my interviewer literally told me word for word that i was the best applicant he has ever interviewed and yet i get the alternate list. i would like to think that at least 1 interviewee of his can end up getting accepted.. unless the adcom is comprised of 100+ people.

Can anyone provide more specifics regarding the second look day? The email gave sort of a rough overview, but I would be interested to hear from somebody who actually attended second-look to go a little more in-depth as to what the day was like.

I would also like to know this! Also is there a FB page? I am looking for information on living in Miami. I have a wife and two kids with one on the way and am looking for a nice neighborhood to move too, I dont mind a commute at all. I understand that is the only way to live in a safe neighborhood anyway and that is an absolute must!

Sad to find out it's a Second Look 'Day' and not 'weekend'. For some reason I was expecting an entire weekend of planned activities. Oh well!

Time to take the X off of February 5th on my calendar and move it to February 19th...?
+1 in that I'm waitlisted but didn't receive the second look email....sigh

Hmmm, so I just checked the status page. Says a final decision has been made. (I never checked it before, so I don't know when this was updated) Guess I just have to be patient. I interviewed on Jan 5th

30 minutes!! blood pressure rising. please please miami let the guy who interviewed me have a big say in admissions

Still got about an hour of waiting to do. Trying not to lose hope...

Congrats to those who got accepted

Congrats on the acceptances!

I'm crawling back to my hole with a tub of ice cream. It's caramel flavored - but it'll taste like salted caramel. Because of my tears.

Same boat.

from what I've read, you could still get a call in the next hour or so.
