2013-2014 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats to everyone accepted! There is a facebook page but it is private and a current med student will add you if you add them as a friend (You'll most likely get an email with all the info).

See you guys over there soon! 🙂

So, realistically, what are the chances of getting in once wait-listed? I know Miller interviews ~500 candidates, accepts around ~300, for a final class size of ~198. So, does it make sense to assume they will end up rejecting ~100 of the wait-listed candidates when all is said and done (accept 100 off the wait-list to fill the seats of 100/300 candidates accepted who decide to matriculate elsewhere)?

Does that sound about right?

I've left out MD/MPH candidates from this - factor the dedicated ~50 seats for those candidates, and the probabilities dip even more.

I think they reject 200 people from the waitlist. 500 interviewed, 200 accepted from 10 dates, and additional 100 accepted off waitlist for a total of 300 accepted overall.

So chances of acceptance off waitlist is actually around 100/300.

Hmm, I guess you're right.

Well, then. I don't like those odds. This sucks.

Accepted yesterday at around 3:15 MST. OOS and interviewed 1/31. For all those still waiting, I had received an email on Tuesday about requesting a background check and so that gave me a clue that I was being accepted. Can't wait to go here!!

Congratulations!!!

OOS, accepted to both MD and MD/MPH yesterday!

Congrats! Now you'll have to choose MD or the dual program. They only gave me like 3 days before I got an email urging me to make my decision ASAP. I ultimately chose MD only because I didn't want to commute to West Palm Beach for my 3rd and 4th year. (Also, the MPH students are on a completely different schedule from the MD only students.) I am also an IS student which meant tuition for MD only was about 8k cheaper (35k vs 43k), but since you are OOS, it won't make a difference to you.

Good luck! 🙂

Thanks! I did get that e-mail. Need to decide soon. I'm in the fortunate position of having multiple acceptances, though, so the thought of choosing a specific path within a program seems irrelevant right now!

Please dont laugh but r II realistic at this point?

I'm praying like crazy for one. Rumor is that the last interview day is 3/31.
Same here! Where did you hear that? My status page states that interviews may be extended from September-April.

I have a friend who is an MS-1 and that is the last interview date on the calendar.
Gotchya. I've been meaning to call admissions to ask about it so I'll do so tomorrow and let you know what their official word on it is if you're interested!

that's not taking into account all of the people who withdraw their applications prior to may 15 / decide not to hold miami as their single school by may 15...realistically then it's about 100/200? would that be an accurate guess

Does anyone know if UM gives full tuition scholarships?
I've rarely heard of full tuition scholarships to medical school (maybe 1 per school per year). But I would imagine you would need a LizzyM of at least an 80 to be considered, since you'd probably need to have the best stats among all accepted candidates.

I have a friend who was accepted here this cycle and was given damn near a fill ride with a LizzyM just over 70. She has a lot of intangibles and has had an amazing cycle. It's not just about the numbers, but they sure do help, lol!

This school being in Miami, do you guys know anything about the rotations and the local Hispanic population? i.e. Is being bilingual a considerable plus for an applicant to this school? Good luck to everyone!

I wonder if there's still any hope for people still under review, or if it's just a silent rejection

When are scholarships awarded here?

Merit scholarships are mailed out around the same time as your acceptance letter. Need based grants/scholarships will be awarded after fafsa is in (so I assume around April).

I got a very generous offer and my LizzyM is a 73 so that's not necessary true. I think they really look at the whole package and not just stats.

UM doesn't give "full rides" but they do give merit awards anywhere from 5k-30k a year (increments of 5k).

I remember reading (on their website) that around 40 students got institutional scholarships (I assume these range from 5k-30k, as mentioned above) for their incoming class in 2011.

Are you sure about this? When I interviewed in September, they said we'd learn about any merit aid in March or so.

Yes, I'm certain. I was accepted jan 22nd and the letter telling my about my merit scholarship was sent that same week. (Unless it was a mistake 😛... Which will leave me a sad mopey mess!)

I'm not sure about people who were accepted earlier in the cycle (before dec) but I am sure the scholarship committee are meeting now so if you do get accepted from this point on, you should get a scholarship letter if awarded one. NEED-BASED aid will probably not be awarded until later though (after fafsa is in and what not),

My application has said complete for the longest time. It seems everyone is there and done with interviews. Is the rejection imminent?

I interviewed 2/17 and am hoping for good news tomorrow. Earlier in the thread I saw that some people received some kind of email (second look?) the Tuesday before an acceptance. Did that apply to most of you who got accepted on the scheduled date, or was that just a glitch that happened only on one date?

Has anyone received a second look email??

Jan 27th, I'm supposed to hear back tomorrow. I didn't receive the 2nd look email, so I'm assuming it means WL or rejection. :/ when did you interview?

I wouldn't necessarily assume that. I didn't stalk this whole thread, but it seems like the second look email was only sent out early on one or two of the "acceptance" dates. I interviewed 2/17, and we were told that we would get notified either 3/5 or 3/19. Has your application status changed at all?

Well I interviewed on 2/3 and heard back on 2/19 the very first date I was to hear back on and got WL'd. You should have heard back that day if you were WL'd or rejected, the fact that you didn't either means they didn't get to your app or that maybe you were accepted but they couldn't fit you into the 20 acceptance calls they were making that day. Not trying to give you false hope or anything but just offering a possible outcome

Stay optimistic about the WL..it's better than rejection! And lots of mobility come May...
Before you were WL'd, did your application status change at all?

Thanks nala6! My status changed to "a final decision has been reached, you will hear back by either phone/email/etc." Something along those lines

Mine changed today to final decision has been made. Trying to remain optimistic.

To those who sent update letters post interview, where did you send it?

Thanks

I didn't write one after, but I did shortly before my interview. I would just send it to the office of admissions and address it to the admissions committee. The address should be on that app, it's the same one as for the thank you notes.

"Stay optimistic about the WL..it's better than rejection! And lots of mobility come May..

I thought they don't reject anyone just keep everyone on the waitlist until much later in the cycle?
Can anyone speak to the day when a lot of the people come off the waitlist or does that not even happen?

The way I see it now is about 80 people coming off the waitlist on/after may 15, is this correct?

Apparently it is very tough to come off the alternate list before May 15th. It is possible but not probable.

For those who were ACCEPTED: Did your application status change before you received the call?
