2013-2014 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
What's your gender and budget? Hobbies ? Etc
Hey: I am male, enjoy being outdoors, and am very easy-going. Not sure on the budget question... I'm accustomed to real-estate in Portland, OR, and don't have a great feel for what one gets for paying more in Miami. Feel free to pm me if you'd like to talk further!

They offer merit-based scholarships to either oos or is students from $5-30k a year, in $5k increments. About 50 in the class (out of about 200) got at least $5k.
Can you give any idea of mcat/gpa requirement for merit scholarships?

Their median gpa/mcat for accepted students is around 3.80/32, so I'm guessing most of the scholarships are going to people with 3.8+/33+ (ie those who are above the median for both). Personally I had a 3.9/34 and received $20k/year. I think someone else posted here last year that he/she had a 3.9/36 and got $15k/year (but this person was also in-state), and I know someone this year with a 3.9/38 who got $30k/year.

I withdrew from the alternate list today. I just couldn't take the wait anymore. Good luck to the rest of you.

That is incredibly generous of you to jump on the grenade like that. I hope you were at least accepted somewhere as awesome as Miami 🙂 Good Luck!

You don't have to apply for merit scholarships, correct?

sorry if someone already said this and i missed it in thread but does Miami have a second look weekend?

Hey I'm waiting on a decision from Miami (April 23rd) but my wife and I have been looking around at housing in the mean time. We have been looking at Brickell and coral gables but don't know a whole bunch about either other than they seem like the safest areas (one of our top priorities with kids coming into the picture). Any current students/others have any opinions on the areas/insights?

They are both safe areas, but I can't really picture little kids running around Brickell. It's a very business-ey place, with a nightlife. For a family, I recommend Coral Gables. There are parks all around and lots of open area for kids to play safely. A huge plus of Coral Gables is that it has the undergraduate UM campus that is exponentially better to study at than the medical campus. Whereas for the commute...US-1 is horrible. If you take the metro from the undergraduate campus, it takes about 15-20 minutes, so that's not bad at all.

Hmm good to know, thanks! Anybody know of any good complexes to check out in coral gables?

Do students considering the MD/MPH program have until May 15 to give up spots we are holding in other programs, or do we have to make the decision earlier? I assumed it was May 15 until I saw the following on the AAMC Traffic Rules:

By May 15 of the matriculation year (April 15 for schools whose first day of class is on or before July 30), April 30 for M.D.-Ph.D. programs, each applicant who has received an offer of acceptance from more than one school or program choose the specific school or program at which the applicant prefers to enroll and withdraw his or her application, by written correspondence delivered by regular or electronic methods, from all other schools or programs from which acceptance offers have been received.

Probably April 15th since MD-MPH begins in June.

From the website:

"The first block of MPH courses begin in the last week of June requiring that students accept a position in the MD/MPH program by May 15th and drop all other acceptances at other medical schools."

can anyone speak to the md / mph program...is it more geared towards primary care or not necessarily so?

Not at all. Of course there are people who want to go into primary care, but by no means are we encouraged to do so.

Are there older students at U. Miami... After speaking with another student I'm concerned that fitting in as a non-trad might be a bit awkward.

I'm 35 and accepted MD program ℅ 2018 🙂

Oh, that's great to know! I guess I should just put that out there when I'm looking for a place to live. I had a conversation that made we wonder if I just wasn't going to fit in.

Well I know the average age is a lot lower than me but honestly I don't really care lol. I've wanted to be an MD for 20 years. My dream is finally coming true!! I have friends many years older and younger than me and so many long term friends/support system that I'm just so excited to share with anyone regardless of age 🙂

Yeah, I'm in a graduate program and I'm above the average age... I've just never encountered aversion to that before. This was the first time it was actually explicit, so that concerns me a bit. Maybe it was just an outlier type experience.

Wow I hope so. That's not cool

I am 80% sure I'll be at U Miami this fall (I've been accepted, just sitting on a WL spot at another school). And I'm 99% sure I'll be the oldest in the class. So, you won't be the only older student.

That is great to know, raney! I imagine that one could face issues wherever you go when our several SDs away from the mean 🙂 I hope you end up at U. Miami. It would be great to network with a few of the "non-trads" before the term starts.

Just got the alt list email today, anybody know how much movement there is on Miami's alt list?

Pure speculation: Since they accept 300-330 out of 500 interviewees every year (based on Dean's presentation) and 180, assumed, have been accepted to date (based on the number of Decision Dates except for the last normal acceptance date, April 23) that means maybe 100 off the waitlist? That number can be a bit lower if they have already tapped the waitlist in between decision dates to stay at their expected value of 180

So about 120 acceptances remain to go out
That seems about right

Throwing numbers around:

300/200= 1.5 - 1 = 50% of last year's incoming class was admitted off the waitlist after the last decision date in late April (after May 15th probably)

120 acceptances left/320 remaining interviewees on the alternate list = 37.5% chance of being accepted at this point
Factor in some candidates who will matriculate elsewhere after coming off the waitlist, and that percentage goes up slightly.

So close to the end, yet so far!

How do I access the Class of 2018 Miami Miller facebook page?
In Soviet Miami, Facebook page accesses you!

No, but really, to the best of my knowledge that page is set to "secret," and one of the admins will eventually send you a request to join.

I couldn't make to the Second Look Day, but the itinerary said something about a presentation regarding research opportunities. Was that anything special?

They talked about different programs (NIH, etc) that students have done in the past, and the woman in charge of research there (pairing you up with a lab) talked about her job and what it meant for us

I was offered a merit scholarship that was dated two days after my acceptance letter. Naturally I have since given up that scholarship since I withdrew my application. Pretty sure merit scholarships have mostly been given out at this point.
