2014-2015 Brown University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Someone asked this earlier but I don't think anyone answered.. for the competency section did you guys list ONLY the required credit hours? Like 1 ochem class even if you took 2? Also are we suppose to list the recommended courses?

Thanks

Tell me about it! I live on the opposite coast from the vast majority of schools, and while I would love to get a bunch of invites, I'm worried about cost and time! It'll totally all be worth it in the end and I would be so honoured to get invites (def not complaining, don't get me wrong!), but it is certainly trickier to manage interview season when you are a 10 hour one way flight from most schools.

Holy crap! 10 hours? A flight from Ohio to San Francisco is only 4 and a half. I guess that's a direct flight though

Yeah, I was including stops cause most flights from me to the east coast have them. It's long.

Damn. That's worse than mine. I've booked two interview flights for August so far but the furthest two can't be until class starts--maybe 4 hours each.

Wow!!! You have two interviews in August already?! That's awesome! Congratulations!! I have booked one flight, to and fro, and both are ~10 hours 🙁 But I'm so excited. It's gonna be awesome. I just wish I could teleport or something instead, haha!

Nice! And haha yeah teleporting would make all this interview business soooo much easier.

Actually I have four so far but none of them are in my top choices so it's hard to get excited about them. Mostly it'll just be good prep 🙂

Oh my gosh!!! Four?! Wow!! Which schools, if you don't mind me asking? You can PM me if you'd prefer 🙂 that's really impressive!

Finally decided to take the plunge and submitted the secondary today. Terrible odds given how many spots are taken up by BA/MD students but I love this school so I ended up deciding the chance at an interview was worth the cost of the secondary.

I here you brother, still fingers crossed!

Anyone else unable to log in to check their status after submitting? I submitted at least a week ago, but I can't get back in.

You have to go through the email link. You can't bookmark it and use that. At least in my experience.

Secondary received and submitted on the same day. OOS applicant.

How long did it take to receive Brown's secondary after AMCAS verified the primary? I was verified over a week ago and haven't gotten my secondary emails yet 🙁

You're probably just farther down the list due to your later verification date. I was verified the first week in June, so I received mine early.

Applying here! Relatively easy secondary.

Edit: I spoke too soon, 3rd question...i've got one sentence. ugh.

is it okay to talk about a specific area of medicine we are interested in pursuing in the "fast forward 15 years" question?
like, if we have shadowed a number of doctors in that field and use that as examples as to why we are hopefuls for that field?

I did. I think it reflects well since it shows you've though a lot about you future career in medicine (hence the prompt), but make sure you don't say "X OR NOTHING." They like seeing people with an open mind.

thanks! yeah I've heard about people saying that they want to do this profession and then adcom being like well how do you REALLY know? and they're like....derp?
just wanted to make sure i wasn't shooting myself in the foot by saying how i have an interest in one specific area.

Submitted ! They begin reviewing applications in September so its a waiting game for now. Best of luck to everyone!

Received their view book today. It is freaking awesome! A notable amount of the students featured are PLME though. Man good work, Brown!

Had a laugh at the quote about the student who decided to go to Providence because she wanted to speak Spanish to patients. 🤣

I actually volunteer at one of the free clinics (http://www.aplacetobehealthy.org/) -- and almost all of the patients I see are Spanish-speaking. It's not Texas or California, of course, but there is a sizable Spanish-speaking population here. 🙂

Got the booklet as well, looks like a beautiful place to spend 4 years and obviously a top notch education.

No secondary yet. 7/21 verified.

I applied to Brown on 6/27/14 and my primary was verified 7/21/14. Still no secondary. Emailed the admission office, was told they never received my verified primary application....ughhhhh.....

when them II's or rejections coming? <taps foot impatiently>

Has anyone not received a secondary here yet? I was verified 7/1 and nothing..

I emailed them to inquire yesterday, was told that they never received my verified primary and asked me to call AMCAS. Before I did, I got the secondary...

I didn't even have my MCAT score yet and I got a secondary on July 2nd.... there's probably a problem....

wow congrats guys! It's happening 🙂

Can those with II's please post complete dates? Thanks!

Cool - I've heard they accept people with mediocre GPAs or MCATs. Your ECs mean a lot more. I also hear that getting an II means you have a pretty good shot at getting accepted 🙂

I submitted on 7/15/2014 and got the complete email then.

Thank you! I feel this is far more helpful than stats as complete dates allow one to judge how far they are in looking over applications. Of course, i assume they review applicants in the order they are received which could be outrageously wrong.

I submitted on 7/2... I don't see a complete email in my inbox.

EDIT: Oh, sorry, found it! Complete email sent on 7/7.

I was complete on 8/1 so I have a long wait but what do you guys think of my chances 29/3.7 with a ton of ECs including unique research and shadowing.

Without actually seeing the details of your application, it's difficult to gauge for any of us. After all, we are all in the same boat as you are -- praying, with little-to-no certainty, that admissions officers look on our applications favorably. That being said, your MCAT and GPA are both below the median but fall above the 10th percentile (although your MCAT barely scrapes by). Without knowing anything about you besides your numbers, I would recommend that you avoid getting your hopes too high, but don't count yourself out too early either.

Best of luck to you!
