2014-2015 Case Western Reserve University Application Thread

Hi all! Was wondering whether applying to the College track hurts one's chances for the University track?

I understand that there is a slight delay in getting an interview if one applies to both, but are there any effects beyond that? Thanks in advance for your help!

From what I understand, there is zero other, positive or negative, impact. In the past, people applying to both have been accepted to only the university track, only the college track, to both, and to neither. Apply away wherever you'd like and be worry free about whether it'll hurt you at the other program!

By the by, make sure you are checking your character counts including spaces. I wrote my first essay thinking it was only going to count actual characters, and then I had to do some serious rewriting that could have been avoided when I pasted it in.

Good luck!

Oh, also, I had to include a citation in one of the essays. The essay without the citation is perfect length, but the citation pushes it. I'm pretty sure that kind of thing is ok, and probably part of why they give a soft limit. It's crazy how fast characters add up.

Not at all. Yes there may be a delay so that if you get both interviews, you can coordinate a single trip to Cleveland, but there is no effect whether or not you get in regardless of how late you interview, no matter which program it is. You never interview for the waitlist.

I don't think I saw anyone ask this question on this thread -- I checked the box for MSTP by mistake on the program selection page. I think the system saved it and I can't seem to uncheck it anymore. Is there any way to undo it, or should I contact the admissions office? Is it just me, or can it not be unchecked for everyone else?

When answer the research prompt and describing research motivation, etc. Do we need to cite literature? How do we format it?

You should not need to cite literature, since you are not writing a scientific paper, and you do not need to include all the gory technical details of your research. Your audience consists of intelligent people, but they probably do not have domain-specific knowledge in your field. The essay should be intelligible on its own to this audience.

Write in a concise and understandable way that demonstrates what your specific role in the research was and how your thought process guided the investigations you did (the prompt is quite specific about what is expected). Not entirely sure what you mean when you ask about formatting - just write it like a normal essay.

Thanks for your reply!
I know that for a good research project, it is very important to have a "big picture question" and a hypothesis, but I just can't help describing how I got to the research question I wanted to answer, which I think is equally important as the method, results etc. What's your opinion on that? I went over the word limit already....

Is anyone complete yet? Does case send out an email, or is it just a status change?

I apologize that this will be a relatively unsatisfying answer, but just write what you think will portray your scientific reasoning in the most favorable light within constraints of the character limit. There are no hard and fast rules, especially not knowing what your research question actually is. Since the prompt asks you specifically for the hypothesis, methods, results, and interpretation, you must address these four components, but there is no reason why you can't also include a brief explanation of how you got to your research question if you are able to describe everything else more concisely.

Abstract the prompt to a even higher level: what would be the "elevator pitch" for your project, if you were given only 30 seconds to talk about it?

Does anyone have some secret to getting a <100 kb jpeg photo to look okay? When I shrink and compress mine enough for the application, it looks terrible.

I had the same situation, but when I uploaded it to the applications, they usually just look normal.

I used the Paint program on PC. In the upper left there is a resize button. Then go from there.

Start with resizing. If your picture is under 200x200px, it will probably be pretty close on it's own at that point. If not, scale it down to about that size.

If you're there and it's still too big, you can either shrink the picture a little more or try applying heavier compression. Not every program gives you good control of the compression settings. It shouldn't take too long to get a decent image from a decent program.

Submitted within the two week deadline!!! OMG, this was a bear...8 essays...glad it's done

Did any one answer this "Is there any further information that you wish to share with the Admissions Committee? This optional response will only be considered by the University Track."

I did. I figured I might as well.

I'm having some trouble with uploading the photo. When I upload, it gives me the "upload was successful" message, but I can't view it in the application. Have you guys been able to view it once you've uploaded?

Would it be a good idea to just talk about why I am choosing the school?

That's pretty much what I did. I shadowed a physician at UH so I talked about how I enjoyed my experience in their hospital system too. It's really open ended though, so I think you could talk about anything relevant to your application.

To any current Case students (either track): do you know when the first interview dates are or were in previous years? I am flying in the first week of September and would love to be able to do more than one interview while in Ohio with the lovely flight prices. That is...assuming I will get an interview here at all. Thanks!

Haha this was my thought too, but it's going to be so early in September it seems like it would be tough for an in-the-area email to fly...

*sigh* Yeah that's kind of what I figured. Oh well, thank goodness I've been saving up sky miles! I'm sure my family won't mind an extra visit home anyways.

"When were you challenged to teach, coach, or mentor someone to learn a new skill or improve an old one?"

Do you guys think "skill" is a pretty flexible term? I have quite a bit of tutoring experience, but that's not very exciting to talk about. Without revealing too much identifying info, I do have heavy involvement in a mentorship program but it's not about "skills," it's more of a big brother/big sister kinda thing. I wanted to write about that, but wonder about the word skill...would that fall under the umbrella...?

Any consensus on whether the College Track can see our University Track stuff? I wanted to reference my greatest challenge in the feedback essay given that 1000 characters isn't that much. Thanks so much!

I couldn't see it either. But once you submit you'll be able to see it.

It's been about a week and I'm not marked complete. It says you'll be marked complete when "all letters of evaluation are received by AMCAS". Does this mean once AMCAS receives the letters that I'm not even assigning to Case? Or am I misinterpreting this?

I've been waiting longer, status is still "SUBMITTED including PAYMENT", but it also says "Application Completed: Yes"

Mine says incomplete, but I know they have my committee letter so I'm not sure what else it could be. Not sure what's going on!

Someone here goes through the applications by hand and marks them as completed. Everything else is generally automated, being marked as completed is done by a person to make sure everything's in place for the next steps on our side. It takes a varying amount of time. If you're submitted and paid, you should be good on your end of things.

Thank you for the response! So it has nothing to do with other letters I'm submitting to AMCAS but not to CWRU not being in yet? I realize this doesn't make sense, I was just confused by the wording on iApply. Thanks again!

Im a little confused, at the top of the check status website, it says:
Application Submission Status: SUBMITTED including PAYMENT
and on the bottom it says:
Application Completed:Yes on 07/30/2014
Does this mean my application is complete?

Yep

In general: while EVENTUALLY all essays and information can (and will be) accessible to the admissions committee for each school, it's advisable to make each essay self contained for the readers.

Specifically, I think the greatest challenge essay is actually read by CCLCM anyways-unless that has changed. Furthermore, 1000 characters is plenty long. Refer to my previous posts re: lengths of essays and character limits.

tl;dr: don't make reference to other essays and stay within limits.

How long does it generally take to go from "Submitted" to "Complete?"

All the processed applicants have been sent their invites, and new ones are going out as we receive them.

If you haven't gotten your secondary invite, check your spam folder.

If you can't find anything with "CWRU School of Medicine" in the subject from us, you should go to the main page at iapply.case.edu and attempt to reset your password using your AMCAS preferred email. That should send out another email to you with a link that will let you change your password. Log in with your new password after that and you should be able to go through the process.

i have a question about our app status

at the top of the status page, it says: application submission status - SUBMITTED including PAYMENT

but at the middle of the page, next to Application Completed: it says Yes on 8/6/14

does that mean im complete? or am i not complete until i receive a complete email?

This has been asked twice already (once on this page); yes you are complete.
