2014-2015 Georgetown University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was waitlisted first week of March and immediately sent them a full length letter of intent. I know I'm suppose to send another letter if I don't hear back in 4-5 weeks but I'm not sure what to write for the second letter after going all in on the first letter if I don't particularly have any updates. Do I just reiterate the points in the first LoI?

A reiteration of your original points and reaffirming your intent is a solid game plan

This may have been discussed before, but does anyone know how large the WL is? Is it ranked or unranked?

I can't find source but I remember reading somewhere that it is unranked. I don't know how often they're re-reviewed once they're on the waitlist though...

Does anyone here know if the admissions office accepts calls on the behalf of wait-listed applicants from GU Faculty/MD's in support of their application?

Most likely. It wouldn't be a bad idea to call the admissions office to check how to best go about this.

Are there any re-applicants on here? I'm curious about how re-apps have fared this cycle, as I am strongly considering reapplying here (I was interviewed this cycle and rejected post-interview).

2-time WL here. Can't say if re-applicant status has influenced my application in any way. Definitely reapply if you remain interested in Gtown.

Accepted today. Interviewed 2/12. LizzyM 70. I wrote an email to the office this morning because it had been +10 weeks since the interview. I was told my application was reviewed mid April and should hear about the result later this week. About an hour later, I got the call from the Dean. Good luck to everyone who's still waiting to hear back from Georgetown!

Any specific reason?

There was nothing Georgetown students said that I did not think I could find at Keck USC. The 2nd look day was unorganized to me and I know it was put on by students, but I was just kind of irritated. I did end up liking the students there more than I thought I would but I cannot get over testing every 2 weeks and not P/F. Every student said it wasn't a big deal but then the Dean said himself they are working to change the curriculum. I rather not be part of curriculum changes during my first year.

I also was kind of annoyed at how hard it was to reach the financial aid office.

I have been able to call the financial aid at USC and speak to the same financial aid guy overtime who is very helpfu (and remembers me)l. I also met him in person at second look and he took he time to speak with me.

I will parallel this with an experience I had at Georgetown:

I called financial aid multiple times because I couldn't figure out which document I was missing that was keeping my fin-aid package from completing. I left 2 voicemails and got no return call. At 2nd look, I asked 2 students where the financial aid office was on our break. 1 discouraged me from going saying that they were all booked up in meetings and 1 girl didn't even know where the office was. I know this is not indicative of every student at their school but it really rubbed me the wrong way that I couldn't even drop by for a visit and get more information on my financial aid package.

I just felt more at home and connected to the faculty as well as students at Keck. At Georgetown, I know I could get there, but why even bother when I already found it? And it's pretty much going to run me the same amount of debt regardless.

That being said, good luck to everyone still going to Georgetown. It is an amazing school and everyone who attends will obviously be an excellent physician-healer. 😉

Teefero, sorry to hear about your experiences at second look, I'm sure they lost a high quality student. I agree that it was unorganized, but I apparently got the better end of that deal. I was able to talk with plenty of M1s and M2s that did not seem stressed out at all, but more importantly I was able to tour the hospital with an M4 who took us around her ward and answered SO MANY crucial clinical year questions. I really enjoyed my experience with all of the students.

As for financial aid, I received a large grant, and had an hour long financial meeting to go over everything when I was at second look. Based off of your experiences and a few of the other applicants I talked to though, not everyone had such a great day. I know others whose tour guides were not receptive at all and just had them sit around and wait. Also, the internal P/F struggle they seem to be having is not very encouraging, wish they already had that sorted out. Best of luck to all those still deciding or waiting for a call, I hope to meet some of you in the Fall!

I think my sister went on that tour and she said it was amazing!

I dig what you are saying. Its unfortunate but I am glad to you know that you had a great day and were able to make connections and also get a grant. Wow, it's just really great to get ready to embark on this experience and I am excited for you. The day at Georgetown DID get better as it went on, I went to the social event and had great fun, haha.

Hi, if you don't mind me asking, is your grant from the school? I'm pretty anxious about how to get a loan for such a hefty tuition.

I'm a current SMP student and just got the call from the dean around 6pm (I actually missed the call while studying and saw it in my voicemail just 20min ago)! It's my first acceptance and I can hardly believe it, hoya saxa!!

It is from the school, but based off talking to other people I would not count on getting any more than loans.

Hey,

I'm considering doing SMP next year. I was just wondering what GPA you got in the SMP and MCAT that helped you get in? Also did you do any other extracurriculars or health related activities that helped you get in? Thanks and congrats!

Thanks! That's what I heard too: this is not the most giving school in terms of grants and aid, which makes me very nervous, especially since the COL is very high as well.

Accepted today and will attend. Been on wait list since February
Congrats on your acceptance! Did you send an LOI? If yes, how long was it and what do you think made your letter strong? Thanks for the feedback!

So I just got accepted to Georgetown last week but after looking at their website it says that financial information was due on April 15th!! I never got an e-mail from them regarding financial aid so I didn't look into it 🙁 Does this mean that I am no longer eligible for financial aid???

Accepted this morning! Beyond ecstatic. Good luck to everyone still waiting.
Congrats!! If you were waitlisted could you tell me how long was your LOI and what did you talk about in it? I' getting ready to send my letter as we speak so would love some feedback from an accepted student thanks!

I was waitlisted in late February, so I've actually sent 3 letters since then. They recommend a letter every 4-6 weeks. My first two were about a page long each. I had a short intro, then provided updates to my activities, then discussed why I was a good fit for Georgetown or how I've demonstrated my passion for medicine. My last letter was only 2 paragraphs. I think I've read somewhere that longer is not always better though. Good luck with your letter!

One more question if you don't mind, as it a merit-based or need-based grant? Thank you!

Just got an email about waitlist confirmation. Anyone else?

+1. They didn't do this last year. Wonder if many people on the WL have either failed to withdraw or send in a LOI. Seems like they are trying to clean things up

Does anyone know when is the first day of class? According to the Georgetown website, it's 8/10. Is that true? I've always thought school doesn't start until late August?

Update: nvm, it is.
