2014-2015 Loyola University Chicago (Stritch) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thank you man. I'm just wondering if my hold status at this point means a veiled rejection, though hoping against it iA.
i called also and they said i was in hold status which means rejection, but it doesn't say anything about a hold when i check the status online.

They said that hold = rejection for sure?

that's what they said about my craptacular app. apologies, didn't ask if it meant that in general 🤔

Hmm. It doesn't say hold online. I just meant hold = has been reviewed / continuous review. But I guess that's that. Rejection coming my way.

II! Don't give up hope, there are still two interview dates open in Feb if I recall correctly.
You got II on a Friday night? Lol that's awesome. Does Loyola interview into March or is February the last chance?

Haha no it was a day or two ago. I think they are interviewing in March but those slots were all taken when I called. Not sure if they are planning on opening up more or not.

Oh wow I guess a lot peeps couldn't schedule in Feb. Well, good luck! I've heard only good things from this school so far, and I wish I could have a chance to visit!

When were you complete? And what're your stats? If you don't mind my asking. And, a hearty congratulations!!

Current M1 here, it's been a while since I've dropped in on this thread. If anyone has any questions feel free to ask.

I was wondering if you could please talk about how you and/or your classmates take notes, given the structure of Loyola's lectures. I know, it's a bit vague of a question, but I'm just curious as to how notes are given out (PDF, PPT, condensed notes, high-yield, etc.). I have a macbook, and Onenote only allows me to use up to 15G without buying it, and I don't like Evernote!

In undergrad I mostly wrote on computer paper from looking at powerpoints, and/or annotated handout note outlines (not PPTs), but I feel like that'd be really inefficient in medical school. Again, sorry if it's vague, and thanks again!!

All of the lecture materials--including video recording, lecture ppt, and comprehensive lecture handouts--are posted online (the latter 2 posted well in advance). We also have the option to purchase a printed copy of all the lecture handouts for the entire block right at the beginning for around $10. I know a lot of people who take notes on the ppt itself during lectures, either by typing directly in the note field or using a program like iAnnotate. I personally use the printed lecture handouts + textbook and annotate them with any pertinent information from the lecture recordings.

Exactly what I was looking for, thank you!!

This may be better answered at second look- but do you have any suggestions on where to look at for housing? I may move earlier this summer to get acquainted with the city before classes begin.

Anyone accepted but didn't receive the "your accepted" phone call? Interviewed on 1/21/15. Thanks.

It depends on how long you're willing to commute. Most of the M1s/M2s I know live in the Forest Park/Oak Park area, which is already a 15-20 minute drive despite being only a couple miles from campus. I personally wouldn't recommend living closer because the suburbs surrounding the school itself aren't really the safest/nicest areas (some people don't seem to mind that though). A few friends live in North Chicago around the Lincoln Park area. There's more to do there for young people but rents are higher and I don't know how they can put up with that commute.

Did anyone who got accepted on 2/9 got acceptance packet in the mail?

Since the deadline to submit a fafsa application for Loyola is March 1st, should I fill one out now even though I won't find out if I'm accepted until after March 1st? I know you have to put the school's code in, but I don't know if that's only for accepted students (I've never filled one out).

Fill it out now, use the school's code as well as the codes for all other schools at which you are still "in the running." You should include all schools you could still possibly attend. Waiting for an acceptance and filing it late could cost you a lot of finaid. There are no consequences for filing and not going to school in the Fall. Best of luck to you! 🙂

Edit to add: and if you don't have all of the school codes you need you can just use their search function and add schools by state, city, or name etc.

Need advice on how to get off the alternate list...

Hey guys!

Has anybody received financial aid notices/awards yet? Also, I assume that accepted students only receive their LUMEN portal login credentials once we've committed to Stritch; is this correct, or do we receive login credentials to view our financial aid notice?

Complete late October, App still "under review"... Is it worth sending an update? I already sent one a while back, but can update again if needed.

I got my acceptance letter today too, although I also got a phone call 2/9. But don't be too dissuaded by a small envelope! Mine only had two pieces of paper in it.

I have a quick question for any current students: I heard that Loyola has a split itinerary on Second Look day; that is, students come, and parents come (and they are separated).

Do students commonly bring parents, though? I'm not sure how I feel about bringing mommy and daddy with me.

Also: Is Biostats a separate course, integrated, or not really emphasized in the curriculum?

Thanks!

Can anyone let me know my chances at Loyola for the 2016 cycle?

cGPA: 3.603
sGPA: 3.45
MCAT: 31
I am currently a junior at Loyola Chicago, applying for the 2016 cycle. I am a resident of Tennessee.

Clinical Volunteer: I have been volunteering at a hospital since the Fall and have accumulated 0+ hours. My volunteer coordinator is also writing me one of my rec letters. Will this suffice for clinical volunteering?

Physician shadowing: Shadowed a Pediatric Surgeon this past winter break, accumulated 48 hours. Shadowed Pediatric Neurosurgeon for one day (because he's a big time doctor in Chicago and was really busy all the time-- is also the head of my research lab, my PI works under him)

Research: Have volunteered my time to pediatric brain tumor research since Spring of my sophomore year. Very involved in the research and will continue until I graduate.

Nonclinical volunteer activities: Active member of Amnesty international club at my school. Tutored refugee children my freshman year. Led tutoring group of underprivileged hs students for NSCS. Currently PR for a pre-med club.

Employment: Currently tutor sociology 2 hours/week since January. Scribed for pediatrics office 40hrs/week for two months summer after freshman year.

Does Loyola have a med school prom? I didn't know this was a thing until I had my hair cut yesterday and talked to people who we're going to medical school prom at my local state school.

Does anyone who couldn't stay with a student host have any hotel recommendations? And any interview tips? Thanks a ton in advance 🙂

We were separated for 1 session. I think they talk to your guests about the curriculum and its rigor and the support students need.
For students, it's curriculum and financial aid . Then we were joined together again.

I brought my SO w me but plenty of ppl bring parents, SOs, or come solo... It all depends on who is vested in your education and/or giving you insights about your options.

Bio stats is integrated (I think)...?

Does anyone know if travel and hotel accommodations are covered for MD/PhD acceptees during Second Look? The other MD/PhD programs I applied to were pretty upfront about covering the costs, but I can't really find any information of Loyola's site. Just trying to see if I can figure it out before contacting someone at the school.

Almost forgot today is decision day. Best of luck everyone!

Decision day as in when the AdCom meets?

Correct. My group was told during my interview day (last week of Jan) that our files would be going to committee today and we'd receive a phone call in the evening if we were accepted.

Yikes! I interviewed that same period and wrote the 27th for some reason!

Did they say snail mail letter if we're rejected? I completely bombed my interviews IMO, itd be nice if I got an email just so I'm not sitting by the phone in the fetal position ALL night.

Not sure but I think WL and rejections are via email. I could be wrong though.
