2014-2015 New York Medical College Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just got put on hold! This is my first communication from them at all. LizzyM ~72, complete early August.

Roughly what percentage of interviewees does NYMC accept?

During the interview they said out of 13,000 apps, 1,100 receive IIs. Per their website, their entering class is approximately 195. I typically guess then they would give out about 400 acceptances, so about 36%, or 1 out of 3 applicants. Rough estimate.

Anyone have any clue about the likelihood of getting off the waitlist?

I've heard that they have a lot of people that get in off the waitlist, but thats just from SDN. Hope it works out for you man.
I had an interview on 11/3 and haven't heard anything. today i called the admissions office and asked if theyve made a decision and all the lady would tell me was that I would find out by email or mail. Feel like I'm about to get rejected.

I want to get off this hold list god damn it. Please send an II my way NYMC.

I hope it works out for you too man. Just curious, did you get that info off of last year's thread?

yea. when I went there I stayed with a friend and it seemed like quite a few of his frends got in off the waitlist.

Roughly what percentage of interviewees does NYMC accept?

They admitted 8% of the 12,000 applications for their 2013 cycle, per their website. So, if there were 1100 interviewees, that's an 87% post-interview acceptance rate. That seems pretty high though....

Edit: Statistic is located under "About the School"

87% is a high acceptance rate. From the numbers posted on MSAR, 1268 interview for 200 spots. Just from the numbers and assuming they acceptance 3 for every seat, it should be 47%.

Has anyone been complete since July with NO communication from them whatsoever? Like no KIT email or hold email or anything?

Getting kind of concerned over here...

Me! No emails no nothing, I wonder what's up.
Me too! I had my stuff in 7/14 and was marked complete 9/3 but haven't heard anything else since....

For those who were complete early in July and August and have not heard anything, what are your stats like?

For those of you who've interviewed recentl, what are your general impressions of the mmi? Anything out of left field?

30+, 3.3, top 10 school and really strong ECs and research. If they didn't want us then why aren't we on hold or rejected? Silence is deafening...

Yeah I'm really not getting the silence. I'm hoping it means we are still being considered because if not I would assume they would have flat out rejected us.

My feelings about waiting to hear back from NYMC. Especially the chorus.

Interviewed the first week of 12/14. No answer yet.
Will update when I hear back. Getting anxious.
I interviewed Dec. 16 and they told us that, with the holidays in December and January, we probably wouldn't hear until towards the end of February. You were a good 2 weeks before me, but I still wouldn't get too anxious yet.

Thank you!

Anyone know what percentage of interviewees this school accepts? Couldn't find this information anywhere.

Unsurprisingly rejected! Didn't like this school one bit, so no worries here

sorry to here that, if you don't mind could you share when you were complete and if you were put on hold? Its been silent here for almost 5 months, not sure what to make of it.

Interesting choice of words. I'm wondering why you'd apply if you completely dislike an institution. Seems like a waste of money and time on all ends!

When were you interviewed, for those of you who heard back this morning? Thanks!

Has anyone gotten a pre-II rejection recently? I just looked at last year's thread and it seems like they send out a whole bunch right around this time....

You're forgetting that perhaps I learned about how bad of a fit this school is during the interview day and not from their website.

1. The students seemed completely unenthusiastic about attending NYMC. One kid said that the only reason he went there was because it was the lesser of two evils. The girl next to him just nodded in agreement. Not what I call a glowing recommendation.
2. Not a fan of the library hours
3. Really don't like the fact that they prohibit non-Kosher food in the cafeteria and have Sabbath observance (can't use school provided electronics in library on Saturdays). This is a secular institution, so WTH. I'm Jewish too, but I'd rather leave religion outside my learning.
4. One of my interviewers was a horrid harpy. She pretty much set the tone for the rest of the day

I hope my answer reminds you that there is no need to jump to conclusions. Not all is what it seems.

Oh no, please save your sorrys! I was accepted to a school I liked a helluva lot more.

I interviewed in mid November. I don't remember when I was complete but I was never put on hold, so hang in there.

Sorry to hear you had such a bad experience on interview day. That's one perk to interviews, at least!

However, I would like to mention that you appear to have jumped to the conclusion that I have been paying attention to your application.

I would like to formally apologize to you, complete internet stranger, for not keeping track of your application comments throughout this season. I sincerely hope you can find it within yourself to forgive me!

Sarcasm aside, not everyone applies to a bunch of schools hoping for the best. I thought I might like NYMC when I paid my fees, but I got the disappointment out of the way when interview day went as it went: like puke up the nose. :barf:

I had been wondering which school had absolutely turned you off when you posted about that earlier. I believe you, so I'm kinda glad they put me on hold really early in the season LOLZ.

additionally, anyone who was rejected pre-II, would you mind sharing your MCAT/GPA. getting nervous over here!

If you look at SDN interview feedback you'll learn that many people share my view. I didn't want to jump to conclusions, so I applied anyway. Well... they were right.

+1 to having a poor interview experience and negative impression of the school as a result. However, the students I interacted with loved the school so to each their own I guess!
