2014-2015 New York Medical College Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
How would you get past the graduate & optional volunteer letter page if your letters are all in one committee packet ?

I got both the "keep in touch" and "hold" emails 8 days ago. My friend who is an M1 starting at NYMC said the hold means what it usually means and nothing to worry about. He got an II last year in late August or early September.

I received the "keep in touch" email on 8/1, but haven't heard anything about being placed "on hold." NYMC isn't sending out IIs until September according to their website.

Was very recently placed on hold. What's the consensus: good or bad thing?

From last year's thread it looks like there was almost zero movement from hold to II but they did start sending out holds/IIs later (early-mid September). I think it's a gentle kiss of death for those of us in the hold camp 🙁

Still haven't gotten the secondary yet. Added last week though.

Oh well, you win some and you lose some.

Best of luck to you and everyone else during this long and arduous cycle! 🙂

Just got the "on hold" status email today

how long did it take people to get the hold (or other) email after the "keep in touch" email? I received the keep in touch email 4 days ago and haven't heard anything else yet

Hold this morning

I wonder what the method to their madness is. Are they reviewing by completion date? stats? And why so much earlier than in previous years? hmm... :bored:

I'm gonna tell myself it's a good thing till folks in NY tell me otherwise

I didn't get a hold, so I guess i'm not a good fit 🙁

We don't really know what the hold means. Not being on hold is not necessarily a bad thing. It seems to vary per school, so all we can do is wait and find out once II's start rolling. Unfortunately that's not until September.

is september confirmed on their site?

I got put hold and I think its the opposite so I guess that shows how much we actually know about the process so just keep your chin up

Someone else said that earlier in the thread, but I just did a quick search and couldn't find it anywhere. They do state that interviews do not begin until mid-October though. Also, last year the first one's were not sent out until September 9th, so I think it is reasonable to assume it could be a while still.

Without any IIs being sent out, we can't really figure what the different statuses mean. I was complete 7/15, but no hold yet, with several people complete after me that are now on hold. LizzyM of 70

My letters were submitted to AMCAS 7/24 but my Letters of Evaluation section on the status page still says:
This section contains updated information confirming the receipt of the letters of evaluation from your Pre-Medical Committee or individual letter writers whom you listed on your Secondary Application. REQUIRED LETTERS must be submitted through the AMCAS Letter Service. OPTIONAL LETTERS may be submitted through AMCAS or Via email ([email protected]). We are unable to send confirmation of the receipt of letters of evaluation which are not listed on your Secondary Application. These letters are considered optional and will not be on the confirmation list below.
  • In order to view your received evaluations your secondary application must first be processed by the Admissions Office.
I'm assuming that means that they haven't gotten my letters yet. Is it worth calling them? Is anyone else having this problem?

Thanks!

Does your status page reflect the hold somewhere or is just in an email? Just curious.

Is there anyone else following this thread who hasn't received the secondary? I added them late last week and I know they're busy but I wanted to see what other people were seeing.

Lol, submitted secondary and got an email today about my committee LOR. They said the committee letter was not a committee letter because the letter writer wrote that it was the "pre-medical advising committee's faculty evaluation and recommendation composite." They stressed several times that composite does not mean committee.... Kind of weird. Anyway, they also wanted me to get another LOR from a professor that taught my major before my post-bac, nearly three years ago. This seems a little strict to me. Anyway, they finally told me that I could just have my application completed with the letters received. Which I did, because what I sent was a committee letter and there is no way I will get a decent LOR from a professor I had 3 years ago. Frustrating way to start my day.

Argh. that is frustrating!

Haha... Sometimes I feel like people like this are trolling. Apply if you want to go to the university! Your stats are good for this place.

Thanks! Not trolling, just unsure of my chances here...the secondary fee is on the higher end

I was just going to complain about how I still haven't been given the secondary and I just got it. Woo! See ya $120, let's hope for the best!

Not necessarily. I was complete on 7/15, received KIT email with everyone else when it was first reported here, but no hold email yet.

'Finna change the whole game up with my app. Been reviewed since 08/13 and no response. You know what that means....
