2014-2015 Rutgers University - NJMS Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
anyone know what majority of students do for housing? I live approx 40 min away and would want to live at home to save money, but would rather not have the pain in the ass commute and miss out on being social. Do a good amount of kids live in the on-campus housing or closeby? How would u get in contact with others to figure out living arrangements to live off campus close by? Thanks for any responses!

Hey everyone. Have any accepted students heard from financial aid yet?

I called them to ask about it like 3 weeks ago, and they said that the application would be available the "next week" but again that was 3 weeks ago. I'll take that to mean any day now.

NJMS's administration in general is very inefficient. They get things done at extremely slow pace... You have to email the person in charge literally every other day if you want to get anything done. So I wouldn't be surprised if they make you guys wait another 3 weeks from now. Welcome to NJMS. You guys will know what I mean once the school starts.

I'll be matriculating here! Wanted to know if anyone is looking for a roommate (female, mid-20s, exp. living with and without others) whether they be other incoming students or upperclassmen. I'm partial to Society Hill due to convenience but am also open to other neighborhoods in Newark. I am looking for a July move-in date. Possibly important- no cats because I have allergies.

Decided to attend RWJ over NJMS.
I really liked their clinical training, but it wasn't enough to justify choosing it over RWJ after all the things I've heard from my friends that attend NJMS... Also, NJMS's curriculum is changing to what RWJ had for years, so why not choose curriculum that was proven for years... I didn't like the idea of being the test subject...

"deleted rumor" I apologize if the comment misrepresented the school. I should not have mentioned the rumor on SDN based on what I heard from a friend.

NJMS is still a great school, and I am sure I would receive great medical education at either institution. I just see myself being more comfortable at RWJ than at NJMS. Good luck to all waiting! I hope my spot goes out to one of you.

Also, a funny thing I heard.
Apparently there was a med student that stabbed a janitor. He was forced to take a year off, but is supposed to return next year as a member of class of 2019... And this rumor did not help either.

Wow, I love how things get caught up and twisted via the telephone game.

About the med student's altercation with the janitor - there was never any stabbing. There was an argument with a janitor in which some foolish things were said, and the student was forced to take a year off. This person made a mistake, and that doesn't change the fact that they were, in fact, a genuine person with a true, inspired drive to do good for the community here. It also speaks to the high standard that all NJMS students are held to in terms of what is acceptable behavior.

A lot of the horror stories you'll hear about the student body here at NJMS are isolated incidents - don't let the actions of a single gunner/foolish student sully the reputation of an entire class. Whereas we've had our incidents, I've remained impressed at how all the students have reacted to them by becoming more proactive and cooperative with one another in response. Trust me - these things scare me too, but I'm glad that we've responded to them with such positive energy.

In any case, RWJ is a great choice - both NJMS and RWJ can best be described as, "same car, different colors". Medical school is a famously competitive place, and gunners exist everywhere. Nevertheless, stay positive!

Oh, and congrats on a successful app season! Remember to take it easy during the summer, because you're in for the long haul come August.

I don't appreciate the spread of misinformation so as a current NJMS student who actually knows what's going on, I have to correct you:

1.) Administration is the same "speed" as any other school.. actually better than my undergrad by far. Current students get priority attention of the staff at financial aid, etc.. over incoming students or prospective students. Financial aid has actually gone out of their way to help me out when I needed it so I don't know why anybody would say the administration is "inefficient".

2.) Nobody ever stabbed a janitor or came close.. A student said something rude to a janitor and was asked to take a leave of absence after the janitor reported him. The "stabbing a janitor" thing became an inside joke by upperclassmen. A bystander who overheard them making jokes and did not know better probably continued to spread this rumor..

3.) The environment is not "super competitive". There have been issues with the class dropbox and materials being deleted from it but there has been speculation that a student was upset that copyrighted materials they paid for were being distributed freely. Some students are more intense than others but seriously what do you expect from medical students... I love my classmates and we all remain very close. Rarely does anybody ever try to make someone else look bad.. and if they did, the rest of the school will jump to put that person in their place.

If anybody has any questions about the school, feel free to contact me. I am very involved here.

Most students live in 180 the first year until they are accustomed to the school and its environment. Also, 180 is a great place to live for first year to make friends and get to know your class. It is very convenient to live there as well. The down side is that 180 is expensive. Commute into Newark kinda sucks. Some people will lie to you and tell you it's not bad, but it can be at times (getting off parkway or 280 to be at class around 9am, driving down Norfolk St, and getting into Newark via Rt 21 all suck, cannot speak about the other roads). Also, it's more difficult to be as involved socially when you commute. Obviously, it is possible but you will need to make friends with people who live in 180 or nearby and would let you crash at their place, etc after nights out and what not. Many of the second year students moved out of 180 and moved into Society Hill which provides all the benefits of living in 180 essentially but for half the price (and possibly a nicer apartment even). A significant number of upperclassmen also moved to Montclair, Jersey City, Bloomfield, and other surrounding towns.

Society Hill apartments can be found listed by the owners on craigslist and the such, you can also post in your class FB and see if any current students will be leaving their apartments. Many apartments are handed down NJMS generations this way.

Personally, I would recommend living in 180 or society hill for the first year. After that, you can move back home or do whatever you want after you get a feel for your schedule and feel more comfortable.

Does anyone know what the grading policy will be for the new curriculum this fall?

Nothing has been said about changing the grading policy yet, so I am 99.9% sure it's P/F with internal ranking. Hard to imagine a change that important taking place without current students hearing about it.

LMFAO.

There's good and bad things about NJMS. We have a community of awesome students who are very helpful and friendly, but there are bad apples here and there who slip through the cracks in the application process.

The kid who got into an altercation with the janitor had a readily apparent personality disorder, but that was an isolated case. Our dropbox was deleted by a gunner but our efficient student council replaced it asap.

The administration is quite slow and unorganized, but that's probably true amomg most public schools. I'd imagine private schools run a better oiled machine.

Our preclinical grading system is quite awful and promotes gunning. As posters above mentioned, its pass fail with internal rankings based on quintiles. With the system of honors, high pass, pass, and fail, you're only worried about your own grade and beating a benchmark. With the current system, you hope everyone else does poorly so that the average is low and you look better in comparison. They really need to switch it to pure pass fail with no internal rankings the first two years if they want to decrease the competitiveness.

The internal rankings are only are as bad as you allow them to be. They don't actually mean anything except for AOA and every school has AOA. Residency programs do not look at your quintile. Also it's really not that competitive here. Everyone is very eager to help each other regardless of the internal rankings. Plus every medical school will be competitive in some way, it's bound to happen when your throw together 100+ type A people.

Residency programs do not look at your quintile.

I don't know about that. I was told that quintile will be included in the Dean's letter. They won't say which quintile you are in, but they will use "good/great/excellent/ etc" to imply which quintile you are in. If what you said is true, being in the bottom quintile would essentially be same as being in the 2nd highest quintile, which I don't think is true, nor is it fair to the people that worked hard to get where they are. Also, residency programs always look for ways to pick the best applicant possible (or rank the best to worst), so if they are provided with quintiles, it is hard to see them ignoring it.

I apologize if this was asked before, but did anyone receive their complete financial aid package yet? I received a few letters in the mail about unsubidized loans but I'm not sure if those comprise the entirety of my financial aid package. Thanks for the help!

Unfortunately, that is the final package. You will have to fill the rest of COA (Cost of Attendance) through GradPLUS loan, which has higher interest rate.

If your parents have low income, you may qualify for Perkins loan of about $2000 a year. That has 5% flat interest rate. $2000 is not much compared to $50,000 - 60,000 you will take out, but I will take extra Perkins loan over extra GradPLUS any day.

NJMS upperclassman here.

Quintile only matters for AOA, which only matters for select residencies - and not even all of them (Derm, Rad Onc, Interventional Radiology, yadda yadda). People match, ALL THE TIME, into these competitive residencies, who are not members of AOA. What matters most BY FAR? Your Step 1 score and your personality. Only a HANDFUL of students are AOA after grades of the 1st two years. A lot more are inducted after MS3 grades, which also matter a lot more than the first two year grades and actually are taken into consideration when applying for residency.

Our student affairs counselor showed us what residency programs look for. The fact that you attend a US MD school is more important than your grades for the 1st two years. LOL. Because what does "doing well" your first two years mean if you bombed Step 1? Does every medical teach the same way? NO. Which is why Step 1 is the MOST important thing on your application.

The grades from the first two years are literally one sentence on your dean's letter. What MAKES your dean's letter is how you interact with patients third year, how you stand out to attendings and residents, etc.

Another note: Quintiles are also not a predictor of someone's Step 1 score.

How do you get on the portal? Do you need to activate the NETID? I can't get this to work.

I got quite a few letters about financial aid through the mail. I did activate my NETID, which you may have to do to access the portal, but I am not entirely sure as I haven't accessed the portal myself.

Sigh... I can't quite say that I didn't see that coming, but it is still a bit disappointing. Thank you for the info!!

Has anyone on priority waitlist heard back yet? It's been a few days since April 30th deadline...

I got accepted from the priority wait list. I loved the school on my interview day, but now that going into Newark everyday is becoming a reality, I am a little scared! How do the other accepted ladies feel about driving into Newark every day?

For those of you still on the wait list, I sent a letter of intent with an update, which definitely helped.

Really liked NJMS, but fin-aid was a disappointment. Withdrew - hopefully one of you guys get my spot!

Congrats and welcome to NJMS! As a female, I have never felt unsafe at Newark. Just a few things (and this goes for many med school locations): don't be stupid. Don't walk outside at night alone with your iPhone/laptop out. Be aware of your surroundings. When leaving clinic around 8 pm or later, try to walk with a group of people - or you can all take the tunnel back to the parking deck. I have never had a problem. The courtyard, parking deck, parking lot, and tunnel are all well-lighted. You also have to swipe to go everywhere.

When you drive in (assuming you will be attending class - which most people stop doing by MS2), you will mostly be there during the daytime. There's security at entrances, the library, and the parking deck. Nothing to worry about 🙂

hey everybody,
I am applying to NJMS this cycle and I was hoping some of you could give me some input on my chances. I am hoping to apply and have my app verified by AMCAS by the end of the first week of June. I am trying to apply in state.
cGPA- 3.5; sGPA- 3.38
MCAT- 31
Shadowing- about 40-50 hours
Total research hours- 750 hours (one small project, then one year long project)
Total volunteering hours- about 575 hours
I have decent EC's otherwise organizing large events for my campus, etc.

I would really appreciate any comments or advice any of you may have. Thanks!!

Hey! my friend goes here and shes a second year and I asked her the same thing and she said it isn't thatttt bad. Obviously it's Newark, but as long as you walk around with groups once it gets dark you should probably be fine. Idk if any other current students can attest to this though.

Any more movement on the waitlist?

Did anyone from priority alternate hear back yet?

I got off the wait list a few weeks ago! SO EXCITED to be attending in the fall!

I also got in off the priority waitlist but like a month ago!

Accepted off the priority alternate list today. Very excited to meet everyone. Good luck to those still waiting or applying this year!

hi njms folk!

I have a question - since University Hospital in Newark became a free-standing institution, has it affected its affiliation with NJMS in any way? or have you seen any changes to clinical education in MS3 and MS4? thanks!

Those of you that interviewed at NJMS last cycle, would you be able to tell me how the interview went? I'm applying ED for the 2016 cycle and my interview is tomorrow.

Those of you that interviewed at NJMS last cycle, would you be able to tell me how the interview went? I'm applying ED for the 2016 cycle and my interview is tomorrow.

It was 1 faculty interview and 1 student interview for me (if you signed up for it, which I did). They were both pretty relaxed/normal interviews. They asked the basic questions (why medicine, why NJMS) and then they asked about my activities, what I do at school for fun etc. Pretty good interview day.

I doubt it would be different for ED.

Does anyone have any information about clinical rotations during years 3 and 4 at NJMS ? Are you in newark hospitals or elsewhere in NJ?

i have to choose between quinnipiac and NJMS within the next few days . it appears that NJMS is moving toward the organ based curricula common at new schools like Quinnipiac, so i am just trying to find ways to differentiate the 2schools. any insights would be greatly appreciated!! thanks! I am OOS at NJMS but would probably be able to qualify as instate for second year and onwards if not first year two and was offered a scholarship at Quinnipiac so they are both pretty similar in terms of cost.

Hello, can someone please post a link to the Facebook group for class of 2019? Thank you!

Would someone try logging into the accepted students portal?

Some reason mine isn't working, and I was just wondering if it's just me or everyone else too.
