2014-2015 Stanford University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just withdrew! Best of luck to everyone on the WL 🙂

I called the office last week, but I didn't really get any useful information. "WL movement is hard to predict, etc."
Thanks for calling! I imagine it is truly hard for them to know until April 30th has passed and they prefer not to get people's hopes up.

Do you have to withdraw from AMCAS or send mail to admissions?
if you know how to withdraw from AMCAS let me know!! 😀 teasing. Good luck!

I'm guessing we won't hear anything until next week, until they get a feel for what rebalancing is required.

Does anyone know if they typically call or e-mail to offer acceptances to people on the WL?

How many wait listers are here? Roughly counting 10 ish?

Every time I see the alert that someone posted in this thread, I get excited thinking that a fellow waitlister has good news to share! Still hanging on to a tiny shred of hope over here ...

I wouldn't bother, to be honest. Most people on the waitlist aren't going to turn down Stanford if offered, and they had no reason not to send out whatever small number of offers they had left last week. For those that are already in programs that they are happy with (myself included), I think it would be best to stop holding out hope here.

According to the people's sage gyngyn, there has been 0 WL movement at Stanford yet. They seem to be approaching it quite cautiously.

Hi guys,

I got a call on friday from Dr. Gibbs giving me an offer! Its a tough choice since I have the Geffen Scholarship at UCLA, but I have until May 22nd to decide. Best of luck to you all!
Thanks for the message and congrats for having such a good problem. Keep us posted with your choice!

Hey silent waitlister here. From what I have heard, Stanford has not had any waitlist movement yet... any different news?

There seems to have been one last week, but otherwise nothing... 🙁 where did you hear, if you don't mind me asking?

Gyngyn has been updating the Waitlist Support Group thread with the schools that have been having waitlist movement and Stanford has not been mentioned. Also, last year Stanford waited till after May 15 to make any waitlist decisions and I think that may also be happening this year.

It seems as though there already has been movement according to this thread. Not to constantly be the negative voice here (maybe I'm just trying to convince myself that it's safe to commit to an apartment with my friends at my current school haha).

Wish there was a deadline just to be done with the process haha

Stay positive! There is a chance Stanford was waiting for other schools (eg UCLA) to have some movement before making its waitlist decisions. You never know! 🙂

I don't know much about the inner workings of the admissions system at Stanford, but it's safe to say that waitlist movement can occur anytime up to start of the new school year. After a certain point, if a spot opens up, a lot of schools will just let it go unfilled. But, it's possible to see waitlist movement at any medical school even up to the start dates in July/August. Good luck. You'll end up happy (and a physician) no matter where you train.

Hey Guys. I have decided to attend Stanford for medical school, and withdraw from UCLA. Opens up a spot at UCLA! Best wishes.

Many congratulations! Hopefully there is still some more movement left....fingers crossed!

Well, your user name has foreshadowed this story of yours. Enjoy Stanford and I think that's an excellent choice you made there!

So at least two more spots opened up this weekend...more WL movements...

How do you know?
Know the two people who ended up choosing differently this weekend. Have absolutely no idea about the inner working of the admission process though, but I'd assume that some movement might occur to make up for the spots given up.

wonder if they have a committee meeting each time a spot opens or if they just had one meeting at the beginning to group people into preferred tiers

I feel like different schools have really different admissions processes. I wonder if they keep meeting to find people with similar backgrounds to those who withdraw/defer to keep the "balance" of the class.

Yeah, some schools are being much more transparent by notifying of highest tier WL status. While Stanford seems to not want to discriminate maybe out of politeness, I think I would be ok with a 'not likely bud' notification. As to the 'balance', way back people were talking about Stanford's predominately numerical approach to admissions (ex. x#pubs=y points, etc.). Now, not sure that is entirely the case, but WL candidate balance considerations would only complicate things. TLDR: Drink long islands and enjoy summer. :horns:

Anyone on the waitlist heard anything in the last couple weeks? Gah the anticipation and uncertainty are killing me....
Agreed. I am in the same boat with you, blueblaze. For my own sanity, I have set two weeks from now (6/12) as my absolute last day to stay on this waitlist. After that point, I will be happy with my current choice and move forward with looking for apartments, etc.

Same here, 06/12

Has anyone called to check if WL movement is even still happening? If not, and no one posts about any recent movement by early next week, I'll call.

From what I've seen on this thread and from what gyngyn has said on the waitlist thread, it seems like only 1 round of waitlist movement has happened around May 15. Calling would probably be a good idea

Do you have a number that we can call that will lead to a person?

We just have to be careful for selection bias. This thread is only a very small segment of the waitlisted candidates (looking at past years, I think most interviewed people not accepted are waitlisted). Gyngyn's is also only relevant for WL candidates that overlap with his accepted ones.

I tried here this morning (general MD admissions contact # on the website): (650) 723-6861

However, no one picked up, and I didn't leave a voicemail.
