2014-2015 Texas Tech University - El Paso Application Thread

Hey guys! I just finished my secondary but I don't know whether to apply or not, is it already too late?

PLFSOM interviews until mid-January, and last year, many who interviewed in January matched. If your application is good, you may still have a chance.

For those of you who have interviewed (or are planning to), is there a good/convenient hotel that you used? I know many of them have free shuttles to/from airport, but do any hotels have shuttles to/from the school?

Hyatt Place offers a free shuttle within a 3 mile radius and the school falls within that radius. Call to confirm though.

There's an America's Best Value Inn within walking distance of the school, but the reviews aren't that great.

I'd take advantage of the student host option. Those who live close to the airport probably wouldn't mind picking you up from the airport as well as giving you a ride to the school on interview day. Plus, it's free. (I ended up giving my student host a thank you card and $25 gift card to express my gratitude, but what I spent still ended up being a fraction of what I would have spent had I stayed at a hotel. Not saying you have to, the hosts are not expecting anything.)

Did anyone receive a letter from El Paso about 20 days after the interview?

Hello all,

I received my first II here today.
In-State, 3.6 sGPA, <30 MCAT, outstanding EC's (you can PM me), family health conditions that have engulfed me in healthcare for my entire life, URM

Hi! Congrats! When were you complete?

So today I got 9 emails from EL Paso requesting me to finish my secondary application. I thought that was a huge mistake, but I from what I gathered from contact it was how many times my primary application was looked at. So I sent it in this afternoon. Anyone else have this happen?

I like El Paso a lot and would choose this school over some of the others. Can some of you who received interviews post some stats and the experiences they had for interview invite?

My STATS are not great. MCAT: 25 - 9/7/9. | GPA: 3.5 | 3.9 Science | I have two degrees one in BS in Biochem and another in CLS from TTUHSC. | 1000s of hours of research and have worked in the medical field for years as a clinical Lab Scientist so I have years of diagnostic experience. Does anyone have a realistic idea about other applicants STATS or acceptances? or The acceptance experience they had with low STATS. Thanks

I applied last year with a 3.8 and a 26 mcat. I received an interview but no acceptance.

I feel that if they contacted you 9 times to complete your secondary, there must be something going on. Either they think your application is phenomenal or the system is automatically pushing you through and they are just sending a reminder for you to complete it.

Hello, my sGPA was a 3.6 which is fairly average. My MCAT was <30 because I had to return home immediately prior to taking it for family health complications and wasn't necessarily in a relaxed state during testing. My father was diagnosed with brain cancer when I was eight years old and was in remission for ~13 years before having a relapse about two weeks before my MCAT.

Since some people don't update their sdn "status," do you mind sharing if you were accepted by any other MD schools? Do you think not getting accepted was solely due to your MCAT or other reasons? (I'm in a similar boat as you this year stat wise)

I did not get accepted by any other MD schools. I am a reapplicant. I talked with admissions at one of the other schools I interviewed at, and they told me my chances were not too great last cycle with a 26 MCAT. So yes, I think the MCAT had a huge factor into not getting accepted.

Sorry to hear that. Never understood why schools interview applicants just to say "nvm your MCAT was too low...."

It is so competitive. But when you think about it, they sort of need to interview a good amount of people, even those with low stats. Otherwise, they run the chance of not filling the class up.

You just have to pick yourself up, try improving in any way possible, and keep on going.

Hoping for an II here! Complete in early June though, so not overly hopeful. Does anyone know what interview date they have filled up to?

I believe I was given the option of Oct 23rd and Oct 30th. I didn't click over to the next month. But there are quite a few weeks between Oct 23rd and January!

Exactly. I wouldn't feel too worried yet. Even though I didn't get accepted, I had an interview sometime in December and I knew a couple people who prematched right after the interview.

I am still waiting to hear from ANY TX schools yet with 33/3/7/3.7/IS stat, with decent ECs. Any thing I should do, like call them?? or just wait???

Does anyone know what percentage of people they interview they usually accept?

Well I contacted Admissions and they said oh well we don't know why. But it wasn't set on an automated time schedule it was random. So I finished. I honestly don't think with my mcat being so low I will have a chance but keeping fingers crossed.

PM me if you would like to know!

Best of luck to both of us and everyone else! Hoping for a wave of II's this week from this school. Would love to interview here!
Do you mind sharing your stats with me? I'm applying to Texas Tech next admission cycle

I haven't received an interview invitation at this school yet. I got one at Texas Tech Lubbock though. PM me if you would like to know my stats or have any questions and I can try to help!

Hi guys!
Do y'all think that it is too late to submit the secondary for this school? I got burned out from writing essays that I didn't do the secondary for El Paso. I would still like to submit it even if I only have a small chance to score an interview with the few dates available. What do you guys think? Is it worth it to submit this late?

If your stats are ok, definitely.

Do schools typically send out scholarship offers with pre-match offers? Or does anyone have insight into the typical timeline of scholarship offers?

Do students who get invited to interview at one of the Tech schools typically get an interview from the other one? I've been complete here since early June, and was invited at Lubbock a couple of weeks ago, but haven't heard back from El Paso. Thanks!

I'm wondering that too. I'm in the same boat as you. Complete Mid June. Interviewed at Lubbock in mid August. Have already interviewed at 6 other Texas medical schools but still no word from El Paso???

As of this year, El Paso has separated off completely from Lubbock and is its own entity within the Texas Tech system. The admissions departments have always been separate and they function independent of each other, so no, being invited for interview at one does not mean you will be invited to interview at the other.

I do not know the details of how they decide who to interview, but I do know that this school places a great emphasis on serving the needs of the west Texas border population (this is indicated by the upward trend in the number of El Paso natives and Hispanics in the class -- both numbers come to about 30% of the class of 2018). A demonstrated commitment to service helps immensely at this school as well.

Yes, interviews are fair game for anything and everything.

@Bear2015 Also, by listing literally every single EC you're making it way too easy for people (mainly from your school) to figure out who you are and subsequently your gpa/mcat score.

I understand that there is a meet and greet the night before the interview. Does anyone know what type of dress they require etc.... Is it suit and tie, formal, or just business casual?

Very casual. It was at a cute coffee shop. I just wore something simple.

Thanks estanton, Is it more like jeans and tshirt casual?

I don't think I would wear a t shirt but nice jeans and a top would be okay. The students were pretty dressed down (mind you they have a sort of dress code even to go to class) but a lot of the other interviewees looked put together. Definitely not tie or even slack apparel. It will have no bearing on your admissions decision so it's not that big of a deal if you're a bit off.

Jeans and t-shirt would be fine. It is really casual, and as estanton mentioned, it has no bearing whatsoever on admission.

Students dress formally on days which we see standardized patients (Thursdays for 1st years, Mondays for 2nd years) and on days which we have community clinic after class (once a month). Other than those days, it's ok to wear jeans and a t-shirt to class. Shorts, sandals and skirts too far above the knees are the only strict no-no's.

For those who recently for II's, where are the interview dates filled up to?
