2014-2015 University of Arizona - Phoenix Application Thread

what do you think happened then with the interview? i wonder what they look for.
I have no idea I felt really great about it as well. I think that's mainly because all the interviewers were told to be very receptive and encouraging. Kinda blindsided haha but I hope others did better!

Thank you so much by the way. It really is very nice having you on here and it helps us to understand the review process. I know the committee has already sent out pre-interview rejections so could you share approximately how many applicants are currently in pre-interview review at this point?

Don't think you're gonna get an answer on this one fellow amigo! I've been checking periodically to see if your question was answered. Best of luck to you and keep us informed!

The number may be discouraging considering how few seats we have remaining to offer....~400.

well I guess that's it for me. I am no where near a "top performer" based on my Mcat score 🙂

Dr. Cunningham, thanks to you and your staff for actually considering applicants holistically. I received an email last week confirming courses which I've taken from a nice lady named Lexi. It sent a message to me that you guys really do go through, thoroughly, every app. Continue doing what you're doing because it really does make a difference even if it's a mere confidence booster 🙂 Over and out!

Thank you for the feedback! Lexi is a phenomenal member of our team!!

Well, you can always reapply next time and retake the mcat. I really wish I knew how the admission committee feels about me- I guess I could be considered competitive in some committee members eyes (IS, honors college, 32 mcat, 3.65 undergrad, 3.95 grad, strong research background both undergrad and grad, 1 publication) and not so much by others (reapplying several times, retaking and unbalanced mcat, late, age, old letters, old experiences, etc). I was interviewed one year and the following year identified for the pathway scholars program but alas still not accepted. I think it is hard to really improve my overall application besides the mcat given my academic records are set and I don't really feel comfortable going back to a professor/P.I. asking for a new letter or networking connections.

Does anyone know if the status, "your application is ready" mean that it has not been reviewed yet?

Thanks!

I applied for the student overnight host program but didn't hear back. If my interview date is Nov 17, should I give up on that option now?

It took a bit for me to hear back last year. It may not be completely out of the question yet. What I did was make a hotel reservation that could be cancelled just incase.

I did not submit my secondary until mid-October. Has anyone who applied then received any updates? Thanks!

Air BNB usually has pretty good cancellation policies too.

@UA Phoenix Med
Dr. Cunningham, is there an exact date when we should expect decisions from the 9/22 interview day? I remember the date being sometime in mid-November, but I am forgetting the exact date. Thanks!

Dr. Cunningham,

Are interview invitations still being sent out?

Thanks!

Has anyone complete around 9/10 heard anything yet? I'm starting to get really nervous. I got my II from Tucson about a month after I submitted. I know they're completely different schools, but I sorta thought I would have heard something by now... 🙁 I'm afraid the refresh button on my email is gonna break if this goes on much longer!

Right there with you, except I was complete early August. We and many others are in the pre-interview hold stage. Good news is we are apparently getting reviewed every week, bad news is there's only a few II's left. Stay positive and don't let it get to you!

I was complete on 7/2 and I have yet to hear anything. As an instate reapplicant who is currently pursuing a master's degree, I was hoping I'd get some love from the school that is, by far, my top choice. It honestly hurts to be left in the dark for so long with my chances looking increasingly grim. I hope you guys have better luck than I do. I feel so lost now.

Complete since the beginning of July as well. It seems like we'll hear one way or the other pretty soon at least!

Hmmm... Sad to hear there are so many others in the same boat. I had been under the impression that Phoenix was one of the schools that let applicants know what was going on? In other words, I thought this was a school where, if admissions was unsure about whether or not they wanted to extend an II, they put you on hold?

Honestly, I find this whole process very difficult. I mean, I never thought it would (or should) be easy to apply to med school. The thing is, it's just so personal. I feel very exposed. It's like the going to school naked dream, except I've been having it since August! Ha! Oh, and I'm standing in front of all the teachers instead of my classmates!

I hope that you all hear something back sooner rather than later! Maybe they're just saving the best for last, eh? 😉

Please appreciate the time lapse that may feel like a cone of silence is an unintended consequence of a multi-staged holistic process that involves more than 20 faculty, staff and students.

We can clearly communicate this better and hate to be the cause of more anxiety, so thank you for the comments! We will improve!

Thank you for your reply, Dr. Cunningham! Over the last few months, I have been very impressed with the way UA Phoenix handles the application process. Not many schools pay so much attention to their applicants. Even if there are improvements that can be made in the way UA Phoenix handles this process, I don't think there is any way to eliminate the anxiety applicants feel. However, I believe I can speak for all of us when I say that we appreciate the attempts you all make to assuage our nerves. Perhaps that is part of the reason we are all so anxious to hear back!

Hi Dr. Cunningham,

I haven't heard anything about my application yet (submitted in August) but I'm interested in the Pathways program and the deadline is in December. Is there anyway to maybe request a decision if I don't hear anything by then?

Thank you.

in reference to the interview agenda, "small group discussion" doesn't mean additional interview does it? Is that a Q&A with current students?
It's a time where you get to sit down for Q&A with Dr. Cunningham, not the med students. I loved the small group discussion!

It is currently snowing at my home . . . add that to the list of reasons for why I am excited to interview this week!

would a current student possibly be willing to meet and/or show me around the campus tomorrow, perhaps around 4? the iced coffee's on me!

If they can't I'd suggest you go to the mixer. Its right down the street from the school. Perhaps someone walking back can show you around campus but you will get a tour during your interview day.

Do any 3rd or 4th years do clerkships or sub-I's in Flagstaff? I am kind of a mountain person. Maybe Dr. Cunningham or a current student can field this?

On another note, I 😍 UA Phoenix after the visit!

So I'm not 100% sure if there are any in flagstaff, however, we do have opportunities for rural rotations that can take you to the northern part of arizona and even new mexico. We have a rural health distinction tract that requires a few things such as a rural experience between 1st and 2nd year, your scholarly project must be rural related, you need to attend some seminars on campus (70%) attendance and you do 6 months of clerkships at rural sites.

If you don't necessarily want to do the program, you can still get rural clerkships in your third and fourth year I believe.

Here's some more info: http://phoenixmed.arizona.edu/students/rural-health-professions-program

Dr. Cunningham,
When you get a chance, could you update us on how many interview spots are left and about how many applicants are left in the pool to choose from? Thank you!

Denied 🙁 all the best peers! Got the email just now 🙁

Oh no!! So sorry!!! I am getting my email in one week! Hoping for the best from my #1 choice!
the last part of the email was pretty harsh .... Kinda sounded like "Go bother someone else with your measly app!" Lol part of me wanted to email them and apologize for wasting their time. Good luck to you. And never forget this grueling journey 🙂

Thank you for the feedback regarding our final decision message. It is a very difficult message to deliver and sometimes brevity is perceived differently than intended - we value every application, we read every application and wish we had more seats to offer.

Thanks Dr! I know its difficult for you guys. It's really hard pouring your soul into your app not knowing who is reading it and making a judgement call on you as a person. My email said "feedback is not available". Many factors may have contributed to not gaining feedback but is there an overall major contributor for that message? For example, do other students get feedback if maybe one thing was the determining factor? It's just that I'm not sure what to do from here in regards to 'fixing' my app besides getting a 30+ score on the MCAT

🙁 I'm sure they did not mean to come across that way.

My husband said something really sweet to me when I got my first rejection. It was something along the lines of "That's pretty cool, really. Most of the people who have ever been rejected by a med school are doctors now..."

Stay Positive!
