2014-2015 University of California - San Francisco Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The magic octopus finally slapped my application and sent me a secondary! Verified in June and less than perfect stats, so I thought I was done for. I live in the Bay and love, love, love UCSF, so I'm super excited I get to remain in the running.

Dear UCSF,

My birthday is next week. You also haven't released interviews yet. Coincidence? I think not. Needless to say, I think you know what I want as a gift. (No, not a rejection letter).

xoxo,
H. Nutella

Holy crap. Birthday wishes do come true (even if they're early by a few days 😉). II a few minutes ago. ;______; Nope. Not crying. Eyeballs are just a little sweaty. No tears here, move along now.

Dates are open in late Sept and early Oct. Hope you folks get hit with a typhoon of IIs today!

Stats?

When did you guys submit your secondaries?
I got the secondary in their first batch and submitted the same day (7/17). Was marked complete on 7/21.

Didn't include an update or submit the optional essay, so it truly is optional.

Hope there's plenty more secondaries to go 'round to all those still waiting!

Congratulations, @hellanutella! I hope you hella enjoy your UCSF interview and I hella hope there are going to be more secondaries and IIs coming around for the rest of us. 🙂

Even though I am late to this group, I am still thrilled to receive a secondary from ucsf tonight! International student, LizzyM 75, verified mid-July.

Hi all...keep faith MCAT scorers less than 30...I got a UCSF secondary today! IS and great ECs! Good luck all!

Anyone else with problems with resetting password? I reset mine, had it accepted, as I have done at all the other schools. Now I can no longer log in to the account, and when I do "forgot password" the email instructions do not allow me to reset the password. I sent an email-but anyone else with this experience?

I know! I've submitted my secondary about a month ago and I furiously check my e-mail everyday. Mini heart attacks every time I get an e-mail. 😱😱😱

Does anyone know if they take longer to review applications to the PRIME program?

@NucleusO , I echo your sentiments about having mini heart attacks every time I hear an email notification from my phone! I'm at the point where I become irked when my mother sends me emails. 🙂 Somebody posted on the Yale thread that their interview invite ended up in the spam folder. I almost never get spam, so when I saw Spam (1) a couple days ago in my Gmail account, I actually got excited. That's how pathetic I've become. (Unfortunately, it was indeed spam rather than a precious II.)

Here's hoping that all these email false alarms will lead to the real thing for all of us at UCSF!

I check my spam almost regularly now...which defeats the purpose of a spam filter.

Geez me too. I check everything multiple times a day. It's getting pretty counter productive as I still have other secondaries to worry about and to finish up. It's just nerve wrecking to hear that people who completed their app the same time that I did are already getting their IIs. :boom:

It should be on my mdapps but I was complete 7/27

does anybody know if UCSF hold apps until new mcat score is in?

😱 II! Complete 7/28.

Has anyone received a rejection yet? I have been complete since 7/28 and haven't heard back yet. As you can imagine, I've pretty anxious!

It's been over 6 weeks for me so I'm just assuming I got rejected. Although I haven't got anything official

Your secondary or primary has been complete since 7/28? Either way, they say it might take up to 12 weeks before you get a secondary, and interviews might not come for many months. It's a long process- just hang in there!

I submitted my secondary on 7/24. They said 4-6 weeks for a response.

In the bit about updating and expanding on your activities, y'all think its a good idea to talk in more detail about your project?
Only if it adds significant value to what you are trying to sell as an applicant or you are providing new information (e.g. I submitted a manuscript, which is now in review).

Honestly I am under the assumption that everyone is behind this year and that all initial timelines don't really apply. Besides, a lot of people received secondaries 6-8 weeks ago and it seems that very few have gotten interviews.

I definitely agree. I feel like they are a bit behind this year. My roommate (starting med school at UCSF this year) said last year the earliest interview dates have been in September, but judging from the threads this year...it looks like the earliest interview dates are in October. So everything seems pushed back by a month. We can't do anything but to wait so stay positive everyone!

Not to burst your theory, but they did have some mid/late September dates. However, they've probably only scratched the surface with IIs ...and things have been rolling a bit slowly this year. :luck: Hope you guys get some good news soon!

What is interesting is that SF and LA have not been springing solely for high-stat applicants. Their mix of IIs seems to cover a wider range of stats than many of the other top schools on these threads. I guess these schools really do utilize holistic review, which is refreshing to see. (Pretty sure the other UCs are not stat mongers either).

so I understand UCSF PRIME chooses people after they already already received an acceptance, does this mean that the regular admissions committee do not consider the PRIME essays until after the acceptance?

Really? I did not know this. I understood it as they looked at each program separately.

Would love to know, I applied for PRIME here as well.

Chiming in on this PRIME discussion... Someone had asked earlier whether applying to PRIME slowed down the review of your application? If anyone has insight into this, I would very much appreciate it. I also have the same question about the JMP program.

Fingers crossed, and I know it's only been a couple weeks since the earliest invites went out, but boy am I anxious and impatient! 🙂

I gave them a quick call to ask.

A really nice man picked up and assured there is no delay of the review if you applied to PRIME. MD admissions reviews your application separately from PRIME admissions. However, this causes no delay. He also said it is normal to wait longer than 6 weeks after you submitted your secondary, you're still in the running.

whoa thanks for taking initiative!!

So they consider the PRIME application separately AFTER you get admitted right? I'm assuming this based on last year's thread.

No, they are doing this simultaneously. I'm trying to imagine how that works lol, but I'm guessing if PRIME approves and finds out that MD has also approved, they will send a PRIME II. If they don't approve for MD, I'm guessing you just don't even get a II. If MD only approves, just a regular MD II.

ooo I see. I guess I'm just a little bummed that I messed up on one of my PRIME essays and was hoping that didn't screw me for general admissions. O well.

oh it wouldn't! Don't worry. I talked to a PRIME admissions person at my alma mater- not UCSF, but I'm sure they are similar- your application to PRIME will not affect your MD application, however your MD could affect PRIME...b/c you need to be ready for medical school in general, to be considered for PRIME on top of that.

Congrats to all the people who got II's! If you have the time, make sure to stop by the Mission Bay campus (can get there via free UCSF shuttle), which is the future of UCSF (including a massive, new hospital opening in Feb 2015)! Most of you will be spending your interview day at the more classic, central campus, Parnassus. Good luck to those still waiting.

anybody know if UCSF is receptive to update letters pre-interview? i have some pretty big updates (publication, and a few others). thanks!

So... no secondary by now is probably a bad sign for mid-June verification, yes? It seems like most folks waiting a long time, but 12 weeks seems a bit much. Sigh.
