2014-2015 University of Iowa (Carver) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey everyone! I'm an M2 here and just wanted to drop in to say good luck! I'll try to keep checking this page every so often, but feel free to PM me with any specific questions about the school or iowa city in general. For some background, I'm OOS and from a big city in the Midwest. I know life in iowa city makes a lot of potential applicants hesitant, and I was definitely one of them. That being said, I've grown to love the small but very academic feel of the city and it is nice to see some IC love on here already from some current residents. I really can't say enough great things about the school, hospital, and the people that work there, but you all already know that which is why you are applying 😉

Also, I'd like to second what someone else already mentioned that we do have prospective student housing available. The students that do it are pretty great and you can usually get a nice tour of the IC area if you ask nicely. If you need details for that, again just PM me.

Anyways, good luck everyone and I hope to see you all in your interview suits soon!
Thanks for the kind words. Hope to meet you if/when I get an II. My parents told me not to live in Coralville. . . .

I am SO thrilled--just got my II and going October 24. I will send a PM about staying with students there. . .that would be a great (re)introduction. I was born in Iowa City, in the University of Iowa Hospital--we moved when I was a year old, but since both of my parents did their graduate study there, I was really hoping I'd be interviewed. Yippee!

My favorite thing about the school eh? I don't even know where to start! My friend looking over my shoulder just said "the people!" and that is definitely a big one. I have vivid memories of calling schools about financial aid in the spring when I was trying to make a decision on schools: when I called multiple schools I would get transferred around to different people and I felt like I was bothering them by calling. When I called Iowa, I ended up talking to someone in financial aid for 30 minutes and I felt like I had made a new friend by the end of the conversation. This type of interaction is pretty common place in Iowa City and University of Iowa. If you're from the midwest, you are probably already used to nice people, but at CCOM people seem genuinely excited to work there and this leads to a great overall atmosphere.

There are lots more things I could go into about how the facilities are new and great. The learning communities are a great place to meet people. The hospital is very friendly for medical students. My next class is starting now though so I've got to go! If you want to know more about specifics about anything I can talk more about that too.

And I live in Iowa City, but many people also live in Coralville

Thanks for all this. I didn't mean to diss Coralville. My parents used to live there, too, which accounts for the jokes, maybe. I forgot to put a smiley face!

IS applicant. II scheduled for 9/22. This will be my first interview. I'm pretty nervous about it at the moment. Hopefully, the more I prepare, the less nervous I'll be on interview day. It will also be pretty cool knowing some of you will be there, as well. Good luck all!

See you on the 22nd as well! It's so soon, isn't it??? :wideyed:I'm super excited to see UIowa from the vantage point of an applicant/potential future med student! I've teased a couple friends who are now MS1 to make sure to entertain me and sell Iowa to me on interview day 😉 But they certainly don't need to... Iowa is awesome and as @markyb03 says, the people here are pure gold 😍

I'm interviewing on the 24th as well! Can't wait! :heckyeah:

I was hoping we'd interview on the same day! I'm two days earlier than you... Awww shucks. Maybe I'll see you in the halls or something as you interview 🙂

Thanks for the kind words. Hope to meet you if/when I get an II. My parents told me not to live in Coralville. . . .

SOOO happy for you Bengali! I'm Indian and my grandma is Bengali btw so I have to ask are you really Bengali?

And why not Coralville? Perhaps it has changed a lot but I like it way better than Iowa City to tell you the truth, and I like Iowa City just fine. Coralville is safer, nicer parking, awesome restaurants, Costco for grocery, a great mall and a very nice up and coming neighborhood around the Mariott and Von Maur.

My boss is very "proud" of Coralville and how far it has come. I guess now that I think about his choice of words, once upon a time it wasn't very nice. But trust me, it is really good in the past 5 years I have been here. And besides, if you come here, you'd probably live at the new apartments at the border of Coralville/Iowa City. There's pricey for Iowa City (850 for a 1 bedroom) but totally awesome. These apartments opened up this August... they kicked me out of the old ones last year and erected these beauties in their place. If only I had more $$$ *sigh* but can you believe that they were SOLD OUT in May? And there's like 8 huge complexes of this building. :uhno:

It is really nice of you to say so. And I don't really know Coralville, or remember (except in my DEEP psyche!!) Iowa City. I think my parents, who were, for awhile, bus riders and bike riders (pre-auto/pre-me) just did not like the distance from town. But I am looking forward to exploring. They also used to live somewhere called something like "Emerald Court," I think, in Iowa City.

Now, as for "really" Bengali, that's a tough question. I'm a half-breed! My father is the Genuine Item and went to graduate school in Iowa as a handsome young FOB. And if I'm a half-breed, then my mother is an All-American mutt. . . English, German, Swiss and who knows what all. I am "Indian identified" (maybe that means something?) and did the required stuff--Durga Puja, Kali Puja, Lakshmi Puja, annual trips to Kolkata, Rabrindrasangeet, BharataNatyam, Rabindra Jayanti, maach and more maach. . . .but also got Halloween, Christmas, July Fourth, and macaroni and cheese.

So you were gentrified out of your digs? Sad!! Maybe we could meet if you are residing in town. (Don't mean to be pushy, though.)

And, truly, thanks for the congratulations. I like the many OOOs! (BTW, your grandma married someone not Bengali? Must have been a scandal at the time!)

Sure, Coralville can be far, and if I were going to school here I think a car would be most useful but not essential by any means. I have friends living in Emerald Court, but I don't particularly like the area. Not that it's unsafe... it just seems... old *shurgs*

Half-breed LOL! It sounds like you've got a great cultural heritage 🙂 I'm Muslim so we have our own set of rituals and sorts, but I know what you're talking about because I have a lot of Hindu friends. And I hope we do meet unless I get more II for the south, since I'm interviewing on the 22nd and may extend my trip to include interviews around that period. We'll be in touch, and no that's not being pushy, that's being friendly! 😀

About my Grandma--it was most certainly arranged so it wasn't a scandal 😀 But I know where you're coming from hahaha. It's odd now that you mention it that way... I believe she had a mix of Bengali and Indian heritage and her immediate family lived in India at the time (and continue to do so). It's all so muddled for me because I know for a fact my Dad speaks a little Bangali and he said he got it from his Mom. 🙄 For all I it could be my great-grandpa that was Bengali or something!

I live in Seville (which is managed by the same people as Emerald Court). The properties certainly aren't new, but are very well maintained. Before moving in last year, we got all new carpet, and the windows are new-ish as well. Also, super cheap, which is a plus !

For those who rec'vd an II did the email say anything about the availability of a travel stipend? Does anyone know how to go about requesting it?

In my II they mentioned a $150 travel stipend but I couldnt find any more info about it so I called admissions. They took some of my information like where I was traveling from and said I was eligible for the whole $150 and just to let the secretary know when I check in and she will give me the info I need to mail my stuff in so its like rebate style. But anyway, first Id call and theyll let you know what for/if youre eligible.

Thanks newbiev1.1.2. I will give them a call. What date are you interviewing?

Interviewed here on 9/22. The staff and medical students were incredibly friendly and funny and turned what I thought would be a stressful day into an enjoyable one! Good luck to you all. Don't stress, just prepare!

Would anyone consider volunteering at a Drug Rehabilitation Center medically related? There weren't any doctors who we interacted with, but we were deeply engaged in the rehab process.

Interview tomorrow! Super pumped. Should be pretty chill as far as interviews go because I literally live a 12 minute walk away. Gonna sleep in my own bed, and have my favorite breakfast place ( java house in the hospital is excellent if anyone is interested) then interview and hopefully be done in time to make my 230 class across the street! Usually I would skip but I'm missing 2 classes next week for another interview

Hope this goes/went well! You know that you will still be floating when you walk into that 2:30 class. . .:roflcopter:

I would consider this worthy of mention. I am not sure how others would think of it, but rehab is therapy, and the volunteering aspect speaks in your favor.

You probably won't be done until 3:30 or 4 at the earliest.

I was under the impression that the website said 2:30 ish? I'm locked out ATM because my caps lock was on when I logged in. It's fine if I have to miss, I just prefer not to!

Friday interviews start earlier and end earlier than their monday/wednesday counterparts. Im friday october 17th and my schedule says 830 to 230 while I believe the others are like 10 to 4 or something...
Ah, my mistake then. My interview was Monday and I didn't leave until 4. Good luck!

Does Iowa send rejections, or do they hold onto applications until the end of the interview season?

Just finished interviewing and my impression is that they'll send out rejections during the beginning of the season too- it seems as though no news is good news, although it is still mostly my conjuncture, of course.

Just polled all the people around me and the consensus is yes they do reject some people right away but not that many. Most people either get accepted right away or put in the final pool. From my class, there was a higher proportion of people accepted from the final pool than normal.

Another thing I remember they told us at our interview is that once you get an interview, about 1/3 of people will ultimately be accepted whether this be right away, from the final pool, or off the waitlist.

It's been great seeing all the interviewees in MERF! Good luck to everyone with upcoming interviews!

Out of state - interview offer. I love Iowa (where I'm originally from)!

Sooo....?
It says the interview day will go until 5:00 pm, but the latest flight I can find that day is at 7:00 p.m. (at CID). Do you guys think that is cutting it close, or do the admissions people know we need to leave (maybe a little before five) to catch our flights?

Try scheduling a Friday interview (if it isn't too late). I believe they start and end earlier.

Oh that sounds like PLENTY of time. I interviewed on a Wed and the last interview of the day was at 3:45 (they last 30 min). You should make it no problem.

Congrats to everyone getting IIs and completing interviews!!! So exciting!!! Mine is next week and I'm getting pumped 🙂

Does anyone know if they are planning to move to a P/F grading scheme? Their website indicates that there are grades now.

I seriously doubt it given that they just completely overhauled the curriculum. And not only that, but an 80% is needed for a pass, as of this year. :wow:

II today!!!! IS. First interview. I was so excited I started crying at work... :/ lmao. I can't wait for the chance to go back home!!! 😍 Iowa😍
Scheduled for 10/29!
"You asked what land I love the best--Iowa, 'tis Iowa. . ." State song, to the tune of "O Tannenbaum." Never have I heard it sung! But many, many congratulations, DazeN11!!

When I interviewed one of the M1 students told us that it is mostly P/F. The MAS and CAPS are purely P/F. But he was not clear on how the MOHD strand is graded. He said there was some sort of grading, but he also mentioned it being H/P/F. So I'm not completely sure!

My application is finally listed as complete on the website. Am I supposed to receive an email or something?

I am locked out of my application! Does anyone know what time we are supposed to show up tomorrow? I know it says 10AM, but when is the check in time? Or anyone that's interviewing on a weekday.

I'm locked out of the portal system!
