2014-2015 University of Iowa (Carver) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am locked out of my application! Does anyone know what time we are supposed to show up tomorrow? I know it says 10AM, but when is the check in time? Or anyone that's interviewing on a weekday.

I'm locked out of the portal system!
My interview was at 10:30AM, you just need to be there on time, there is no check -in time

For what it's worth, my interview was 9/22 at 10:30 AM. I showed up at 10:15 AM. It took 20 seconds to check in.

Hi, I have my interview soon. Does anyone know who has already interviewed know the three questions they ask you? I mostly concerned about the opinion on medically related issue. Thanks!

They were different for different people in my group.

So is it just the blood transfusion, affordable healthcare, and lack of physicians for possible questions for opinions on medically related issues?

Some of them aren't necessarily ethical questions. There are questions on fixing the organ shortage problem, dealing with a drunk classmate, dealing with complicated/non-compliant patient, etc. All of the questions I was asked were already posted on the interview feedback page (it is your best source for preparing). It seemed as if the interviewers had a sheet with a bank of questions and pick and chose from this list depending on where our conversation was heading. If you spend some time thinking (out loud but don't become scripted) about possible answers to those questions you are pretty much set for your interview. Good luck!

I seriously doubt it given that they just completely overhauled the curriculum. And not only that, but an 80% is needed for a pass, as of this year. :wow:

They said they don't plan to! A few classes are P/F with the new curriculum, but if people don't pass they work with them to make sure they don't truly fail. Also an M1 said yesterday that everyone failed a biochem test so they just weighted it less, and the prof. will lower the P score level.

One of my close friends (Iowa MS1) told me the same thing about most people failing the test and was pretty mad because he passed it, haha.

I read somewhere about a correlation between schools with grades and higher step 1 scores. Although it is well known that the step scores are mainly dependent on the individual's own efforts and abilities (and have little to do with the school), this correlation is kind of interesting. Maybe some people who would just settle for the bare minimum to pass, actually try harder when there is actual grading, and in return learn "more." However, the P/F grading is really nice for reducing the amount of stress during the preclinical years!

I was also curious, what are your opinions on taking the step 1 half way through the third year (an entire year after being out of the traditional classroom)? Does the context provided by a year of clinical rotations outweigh the amount of information (basic sciences) forgotten during that year?

I thought Vanderbilt and Baylor had the highest Step 1 averages -- both are P/F. I've never heard of that correlation before but it'd be interesting to look at!

Regardless, I'm en route to Iowa and I'm getting really excited!!! 🙂 will I see anyone else tomorrow?

Any chance we will hear any acceptance info tomorrow? First notifications were on 10/24 last year.

I thought today was the 15th for some reason. All that anxiety for nothing. Hope we hear soon! And thanks ASD2019 for looking back and seeing first notifications were 10/24 last year.

I have it on good confidence that the committee isn't even looking at applications until tomorrow. Had a friend who interviewed here recently and he said they would probably be releasing the first decisions on 10/20

Does anyone know if Iowa is open to pre-II updates? Thanks

Hey all-- I was complete on 9/4, anyone out there still not heard back and were complete at/around that time? There's no true status page, correct?

congratulations, what time did you get email

Thank you, I am so happy! 🙂 Sure, they are in my MD Apps too!

36 MCAT, 3.8 uGPA (my first semester was a doozy), nontraditional in that I am working towards a PhD but am still not the typical age of one. IS resident and strong ties to Iowa.

You are 19 and working on a PhD! Wow that is by itself worthy of an automatic acceptance to anything you apply to IMO!

Awww shucks, now I'm blushing. But looking at my MDApps you shall see it isn't 🙂 For good reason, this process is holistic and I suppose some aspects of my application are weaker than others or I didn't have the right "Fit". But thank you for your post, it made my day! 😍

Woah!!! Amazing!!! Now I don't feel so bad for not getting the email yesterday. Maybe they'll get to us mere mortals later

Awww thank you!! But I'm a very lucky mere mortal toooooo 😀 😉 But yes, that's why I put the context in my post... I think I am a little bit unique for Iowa and they were really enthusiastic, so please don't fret if you didn't get an e-mail yesterday! I frankly had no idea that I would be given an acceptance yesterday because I heard from others Iowa likes to wait a little after Oct. 15. When I posted yesterday, I honestly thought this thread would have some more acceptances but I guess the others are hiding. If I had known that I would be the only one, I would not have made you all nervous. Sorry 🙁 But, on another note, I am so flattered and thankful for this acceptance, and Iowa is so near and dear to my heart, so maybe we all can be classmates next year  😍

I interviewed here yesterday. First of all, can I just say WOW! I was super impressed with the school. They went above and beyond to make us feel welcomed and comfortable, and everyone was SO friendly.

Just a heads up, the admissions director told us that first acceptances likely wouldn't go out for another month. I don't know if she meant that for just our group, but it seemed like she meant in general for anyone. I know that "researchismymiddlename" got one but that might be because of the overly outstanding credentials.

Good luck to everyone! I would love to be able to go here!

Man I hope that is not the case! Waiting another month before hearing anything would be pure torture.

WOW. I did not know that! Now I'm embarassed lol 😳

So, researchismymiddlename is the scientific equivalent of Mozart. But even the musical prodigy (if I can trust the movie bio) was criticized by the emperor for writing music with "too many notes"!! Not everyone has the gift of recognizing the gifts of others!

There is no reason to be embarrassed. I find a sense of joy in your acceptance! I'm really happy for you. Plus your acceptance gives many of us hope that we will also hear some good news soon.

Oh thank you!! I hope for that too because you all are just so darn sweet

😳 OMG not Mozart! *gasp* He was a GENIUS, and I'm, well, not... like really 😛 I just got through school a little faster 😉 And I am not surprised you know that little factoid (which is hilarious and slap-my-forehead-inducing considering who Mozart became!)... you are so well-read it's just amazing!

Good luck to everyone this week! Be sure to post any news on the forum!

I am trying to decide if I should move my interview date up from 12/1 to next Monday. How much of an effect does an earlier interview date have? Also, how much time did you guys spend preparing for the interview?

I didn't spend much time preparing for this one specifically, but it was my 10th interview. I spent quite a lot of time preparing earlier on in the cycle, and I felt comfortable answering interviews questions by the time I went to Iowa. I thought that these questions weren't dissimilar from ones I'd heard at other schools.
