2014-2015 University of Iowa (Carver) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just saw an email from admissions in my email. "Carver College of Medicine secondary notification" *freaks out*

Dear llamas,
A new default password has been created for you.

STOP MESSING WITH MY EMOTIONS, CCOM.
OMG!!!!!

I saw your message, so I booted up my email to just get rid of the heart-attack-inducing "new message" notification.

Instead, I found a message from CCOM telling me that a decision has been made and I should log in to see it. After the longest 15 seconds of my life...

...I watched the video of the Dean telling me I'd been accepted. My first. And what I've been waiting for, for most of my 27 years on this planet 😀

I am alternately crying, jumping up and down, texting people, hyperventilating, calling even more people, and nervously glancing at the time because I have an EMS overnight shift at 5:30 and I'm still just kind of chilling out in a bathrobe...

😍:luck::banana::biglove:

Thanks, SDN. You all helped me so much throughout everything!

Just to clarify...for those of us who have interviewed in today's acceptance time frame but did NOT receive an invitation, do they give you an update on your application or do we just keep waiting past the roughly 6 week decision timeline? I won't be mad CCOM...just give me a yes or no!

Congrats everyone!

Congrats on acceptances everyone!!!!
on a side note, is there anyone who recently got an II? could you share with us completion date and what dates you were offered for interview?

I finally just watched the whole acceptance video from that nice Dean instead of just the first 30 seconds. I was tremendously relieved that there was no "HAHAHAHAHA, just kidding, sucker, you're rejected!" at the end. Boy, would my face be red...

Same question here. Do they put us on hold or a waitlist or something? The silence definitely stings -- I thought my interview went really well here and that my application was a very unique fit for this school. But it's not over until it's over, right?

I think it's too early to be jumping to conclusions, especially if your interview was mid to late October. There's no way they would have had time to get through ALL the interviewees with the time span of the acceptances thus far. I remember them saying that they have subcommittees that review apps and then submit them to the main committee. I'm guessing there will be more acceptances within that time span in the next two weeks (at least I hope!).

Sorry yes! That's what I was trying to say. I was wondering whether or not we would be notified if we had already been reviewed or not. I still have hope!

Doesn't look like it from last year's thread. The subcommittee has to like you enough to send you to the main committee; otherwise, you automatically get final pooled, which means you won't hear until March. It looks like the subcommittees are on their own timelines, so there's no super clear coherent order in which interview dates get accepted.

I have a gut feeling, though, I'll be waiting until March but who knows!

My understanding based on what they said during my interview day is that they do not necessarily make decisions chronologically and that an application can be reviewed anytime throughout the process. So I think not hearing today doesn't necessarily mean rejection or final pool, because you could still get an acceptance anytime during the process.

Congratulations to everyone who was accepted today!!!

I was wondering: did any reapplicants get accepted today? I'm a reapplicant, and I interviewed in October.

This is exactly how I feel. I'm truly bummed about the silence because I was really counting on Iowa to come through. I was very confident my interview went well, but now I'm starting to have doubts. It may not be over yet, but all I can think about is how I failed to "sell myself" after being given the opportunity. oh well I guess life goes on. Good luck to everyone!

Did anyone receive an email letting them know that their application is complete? I completed all of the required material on the secondary 4 weeks ago, but I never received notification that my application was complete or ready to be reviewed...

Anyone remember what proportion of the class is pulled from the March pool? They told us at the interview, I thought...

Dude, you just saved me. I was planning on going there Saturday.
It is delicious and cheap and one of my favorite until they ran the story in the press citizen. Literally my favorite not fancy restaurant is Sparty's . it has awesome hit dogs/ gyros/ pitas etc. Should be on the left facing out of heartland

Awesome. Ill check it out. Tonight they fed everyone from 5:30-7 chili and lasagna along with cookies. Do they do that every night? Or at least when you interviewed?

Nope... Is tomorrow the diversity day? They invited me to interview then but I wanted to do it earlier. Also, I live a 10 minute walk from uihc so I think I just cooked my own dinner lol

Ah, gotcha. Yea, tomorrow is diversity day. They are even taking us out to dinner later in the evening. Pretty excited to be interviewing for such a great school though the weather is quite shocking coming from South Texas.

Last winter I walked outside. My scarf was wrapped up on my face, so my breath condensed on my eyelids. My eyes froze shut. I decided to quit winter then. Great place, though!

Is there only one diversity day?
Idk. When I got my ii they said I could come in for several days, but November 14 was set up for urms to see how they would fit in at Iowa and in ic. Since I grew up in ic and currently go to Iowa, I decided to get in ASAP rather than wait.

Okay, I can't remember to save my life. Should thank you notes be e-mailed or snail mail? Or was there no preference?? I want to snail mail them, but I thought I should ask.
