2014-2015 University of Maryland Application Thread

6.) What is your most recent MCAT taken?

Is this asking for the date or the score?

Does anyone know about the MD/MS degree? Im interested in doing it for Bioengineering or Clinical Research. If you apply to the MD/MS and don't get in do they still consider you for the MD, or do you just change over to the MS/MD when you get in?
From what I have been told it is easier to apply for MS or PHD after you get in the regular MD program since the screening process for those programs is a little more strict.

Secondary received today 🙂
I'm not a fan of the questions (seem too vague IMO) but will try my best!

Secondary received and submitted today! 🙂 Used essays I had for other schools that addressed the questions.

Lucky! Haha I hadn't gotten any questions like these, I'm probably not going to submit til the end of the week cuz I work full time lol

Did your letters process right away? I got six already in at AMCAS, but not processed according to the status page.

I'm still waiting for my committee letter to be complete within the week. What do you guys mean processed letters? How long will AMCAS take to process them when my school sends it's packet?

So I'm coming across a little bit of a problem. The two experiences that I would want to write about (for clinical experience and community service) are the ones I chose as my most meaningful experiences in the AMCAS app. I feel like at this point I've already written too much about them, but I'm not sure what other experiences to write about :help:

I'm the same. I may try to think of a specific event and write about that instead...? But then it wouldn't be a brief overview!

Right! I thought about doing that, but since it's an overview I guess it's supposed to be more general. I'm so regretting my most meaningful activities selection right now lol such a bad coincidence.

Somebody in another thread suggested looking at the experience from a different perspective as in show something you learned from it that you didn't talk about in the primary app. This secondary just got a little harder lol

one of marylands questions is about if we met with a school advisor...if one of the admission officers came to my school and spoke to us does that count?
what do they want me to write about this experience?
thanks for al your help!

I just wrote one sentence about how the admissions team came to a recruitment fair at my school. I can't imagine what else I would write.

Should I write about what they advised? What they told me to do the following year? Or will that type of thing hurt me more than help me?

Does anyone know if we really have to list all paid employment? I am a nontrad and worked a lot in college, plus several jobs afterword. This will take a while! Do I list each episode of employment separately for school year jobs? Should I count funded summer research gigs as paid employment?

Really excited t o apply, but a bit blindsided by this one. Don't most people list jobs on AMCAS?

I got bombarded with like 8 others so I worried but apparently they download the list from AMCAS every week and then send out the secondaries

thanks

I had my LORs uploaded to AMCAS on July 21 and when I go to check my status, there's a "!" next to my LORs but next to "Interview", it says "under review." Is this normal to have, even with no LOR? Does anyone know how long it will take for the LOR to be uploaded in their system?

Does anyone know if the in state classification form needs to be received before them making a decision on II? I looked at my status and it is "currently under review." My HPEC committee sent the letters on tuesday but UMB hasn't marked them as received on the online portal.

I also work for UMB so I want to make any ties I have to them pretty apparent.

I believe the in state classification form is only needed for tuition purposes. I didn't turn in my form until after I got an acceptance (and I was in the "in-state" group of interviews). They look at the state residency you listed on AMCAS for determining interview invites.

I feel like you guys are pretty intensely worried about when you get Supplementals and II's and forms and stuff. It's a loooong and drawn out process and these committees take their time trying to get it right. If you turn in everything they ask for, it will really suit you (and your sanity) well to just relax. I know easier said than done.

Might be a silly question, but what exactly are they looking for with the photo upload? Professional headshot? This is the first school I've seen request a photo. Thanks!

Yea pretty much a mugshot of you in professional clothing, preferably against a plain background like a white wall. Think shoulders and up.

Can a clinical experience mean lab work?
Typically most schools are looking for experience with patients directly when they say clinical. If this is the closest you have been to patients IMO i would go with it. Better to write that than to just say I don't have any clinical experience, you know?

I have plenty of patient experience but wanted to use it for the community service section. I ended up just explaining one particularly meaningful day of volunteering.

Does the residency form have to be submitted for my application to be considered in-state or is this solely for financial purposes?

I just got an email from admissions that "they have received my second stage application". Submitted mid-July.

So they'll review my app even if I don't submit the in-state form yet right? Like it won't be held up because they're waiting for it? Just making sure... Don't want to mess this one up

No, it's for tuition purposes in-state only. Just ignore it if you're OOS.

Awesome. Goood to know, thanks!

You know, I just got a complete email from UMD, and this was in it too:

"Please mail your In-State Classification form to the Office of Admissions, HSF I, 685 W. Baltimore Street, Suite 190 , Baltimore , MD 21201 . In-State Classification forms will be forwarded to the Office of Records and Registration. If you have questions regarding Maryland residency, contact the Office of Records and Registration at 410-706-7480. The In-State Classification form can be found on the secondary application website and under FAQs on the Admissions website. Please include your AAMCID# somewhere in the top right corner of the form."

Looks like they want it now, although this is for tuition purposes, and is therefore for admitted students. 😵

Yeah I saw that but I was just making sure that the week or so it'll take to get to them won't hold up their review of my application. I was gonna submit asap anyway.

Not a chance. Just send it in and forget about it.

Alright just got confirmation. On their website, under "residency form", it says: " The residency form does not affect your application status." So yeah should be good. 😀
