2014-2015 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Interviewed on Dec. 12th. Just called the admissions office...they're having a committee meeting today at 4:30. She said if they do contact us today, it would be after this time.

Okay now I'm totally freaking out ... just tried to log in to that hubspring thing to check my status and it won't let me ...

Edit: Aaaaaand now it locked me out for multiple failed logins. Wonderful. Paranoia level = Infinity.

+1 since mid-August...

""""Currently""""""" under review since early September. I wonder what is worse, the interminable suffering with an expectation of rejection or the actual final rejection ("thank you for your interest")? If we taken into account the fact that hope is a complete illusion, it must be the latter, no? ...what will become of us? First post!

Dean said that we were supposed to find out today(interviewed in December), but nothing. Also no status change. Did anyone else get a status change?

I have a friend on the alternate list and was wondering if anyone knows how that works. Are people accepted off of the alternate list throughout the remainder of the cycle or at one point in time at the end of April? Thanks!

Interviewed in November. Got a call about 20 mins ago and noticed a status change about 2 days ago. Good Luck to everyone!!
Congratuations!!!

When did you interview in November? Early or late? And what did your status change to?

Edit: Also, they told us people are accepted off the alternate list throughout the cycle. It all depends on their "score." They accept the top 20, whether those are new interviews or people who had been waitlisted.

Will they be making multiple phone calls before April 30th?

Yep. Status changed two days ago. Received acceptance call today! Thanks for the support guys. Best of luck to everyone else. I believe I'm going to commit to Miami. Had another interview Friday that I'll probably cancel.

PS, interviewed early November.

Edit: For those interested, after the interview my status said "under review". A month later it said under "final review". It then said that a final determination had been made, approximately two days ago. Received phone call at about 5pm today.

Received acceptance call today!
CONGRATULATIONS:soexcited:!!!

At least one of the survivors of the "10th of December" made it in today! Hopefully the rest of us will join you in the next round of acceptances!

(And thanks for the detailed breakdown 🙂!)

Alternate list. 🙁
Damn 🙁. But don't give up yet ... from everything I've heard, Miami is one of the schools where the alternate list isn't a rejection! There's still hope.

Same here waitlister 🙁. I had a tough interviewer too

I'm wondering about the order in which they review applicants. If my app sucks, just rank it quickly and let me have closure already! I've been waiting since summer.

DId anyone else who was supposed to hear back today (I interviewed in late Nov) not receive any sort of communication? No alternate list email, etc...

No news is good news. They probably passed over your app this time, and will review it again next time. If so, it should change to "final review" rather than just "under review".

II this morning!

CA resident, MD/MPH, when I click the link and log in, it still says my application is under review? Did I get this II email in error?

I highly doubt it was an error. A lot of people have been having trouble scheduling interviews, just call the admissions office. Congrats!

For those of you who have already interviewed, when should I leave my hotel the morning of my interview? I am staying like 5 miles away and want to account for early morning traffic.

I'd leave around 7:40AM to get there a little early and leave you enough time to fight traffic if there is any (likely could be, as there was for me). I left around 7:30 but I made a really idiotic mistake and typed 1600 NW 10th St instead of Ave....... So don't be careless like I was there, lol. I got there precisely at 8:30 because of that, where I would have been there 20 min or so earlier. They'll wait a few min for the last few people to show up but I wouldn't push it.

Thanks for the advice, @azngujuonfire. I made it there with time to spare.

I absolutely LOVED everything about this school! The students were so nice and welcoming and happy and "normal" (lol yes, I heard this multiple times from current students as part of why they chose UM). I really really want to go here now.

Current MS1 here, have some time to spare, checking in to see how everyone is doing 🙂 Happy to help with any questions about our program! I am not involved with admissions though, so I can't really speak to much in the way of admissions/statuses/what are my chances/etc!

Thanks for checking in! Do you know by any chance, how much of your class gets pulled off the alternate list? Not like a specific number but like "Oh they take quite a bit" or "no too much" etc. In terms of the school, what do you love best about living in Miami haha

Honestly, I do not know. Like I mentioned before, anything to to with admissions I really cannot speak to with confidence :/

It varies year to year how much they take from the alternate list. What did I like best about living in Miami? Always being able to see the beach and cycling on key biscayne.

Do you know anything about the cost of dual degree programs? My tour guide said that the tuition for the extra year for MBA was around $20k, which is significantly cheaper than other schools. Is it like that for all the dual degree options?

It is not.

MD/MPH you must apply to as an incoming student (it's not something you can tack on after you matriculate), and that programs tuition is the cost of OOS tuition, regardless if you are a FL resident or OOS resident.

The MD/JD program is basically med school, with a break during which you attend law school, and as I understand it is the full rate of tuition for both MD and the JD components.

I am not sure about the MBA program, but you might but I am skeptical that it's a mere $20K more, unless that student was an MD/MBA student themselves. You may want to follow up with the office of admissions at the UM Business School to ask. Alternatively, financial aid office for either UM Med or UM biz can help you with this one. Not sure the office of MD admissions is the best jumping off point for this one though (they'd likely forward you to these other offices)

Thanks for the help! I believe my tour guide was an M1 or M2 who was planning on doing MD/MBA but hadn't started the MBA portion yet. That was a huge selling point for me, so I'll definitely follow up with one of those offices to verify.

Do all applicants that are not offered an acceptance end up on the alternate list?

Really?? I was under the impression every0ne was waitlisted if you were not accepted post-interview....

wow makes me feel a tiny bit better lol
That doesn't make me feel better...

Why not ? Wouldn't you rather be rejected then at the bottom of some wait list with false hope?
It's always better to be on a waitlist than get a rejection. At least you're still in the game on a waitlist. As someone who doesn't have a single acceptance yet, that is my stance.

Perhaps in your mind, but in reality if at the bottom of an 100 person wait list ...

Is there anyway to find out your ranking on the alternate list?
