2014-2015 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Oh, I guess I misunderstood. So will there be an official waitlist that comes out after all interviews are completed?
you receive a score for your interview which is combined with your pre-II score to give a final score. Everyone is then ranked according to total score and the top 20 are accepted each date. Anyone not accepted is placed on the alternate list, but they could be within the top 20 on the next acceptance date depending on the score of the next batch of interviewees. Although we haven't seen anyone bump from alt to accept so far according to SDN posters (that I'm aware of) so who knows what they really do.

EDIT: this has now been explained at least 47 times on this thread

I perused last year's Miami thread and there were a few people who posted they got accepted off the alternate list before April 30. I'm not sure if they got accepted on actual acceptance dates or just randomly.

I'm pretty sure no one has gotten in here. That one person with 2 posts doesn't really count lol. Would have expected to hear from atleast a couple of people.

Did you check out when they were going over this at the interview and miss it in this thread lol.

Again, at miami they pick the top 20 ish candidates at every meeting. People that previously interviewed and are waiting are in the pool to get picked. The school seems pretty numbers driven so I'd guess that the interviewers score the applicants and they go by the top 20 scores if their post interview is anything like pre interview.
I didn't "check out." What I'm saying is if you already received the alternate email, I was under the impression that you are basically out of the running to be in that top 20. As with the email correspondence I have received from Miami states that it will be sometime before I hear given the interview cycle extends till early April. I also believe the question has been thrown around on whether anyone with alternate status has since been accepted and from what I can gather that is a no. Simply trying to understand as many on this forum likely feel vulnerable and uneasy about this whole process.

Just got that alternate list. Well at least I stayed in south beach and enjoyed the hell out of that weekend before my interview. But interviewing this late in the cycle, even killing the interview doesn't guarantee nothing.

Join the club lol. I knew I didn't kill my interview, so I shouldn't have expected much 4 weeks later. I just wish I knew my approximate placement on that one ranked list.

Do y'all think it's better to send frequent, short updates to show interest or just wait until April to send one long but well-versed update/letter of intent?

I received a waitlist letter from another school that mentioned that they preferred that we not send letters of interest / updates more than once every six weeks. I'm sure it varies from school to school, but that seemed like a good rule of thumb to me.

So I haven't received anything from miami...

Is this usual. Maybe I'll just call them later since I haven't heard yet and the decision thing has been up on my portal for a while.

It's a bit unusual since I guess people do hear Wed/Thurs morning. If it's been 7 days, I'd call or just wait to call later today!

You still got a chance! Hold on to that hope as long as possible lol don't call. But really, I'd wait to call them on Monday, after 7 days passed.

anyone know if it is possible for OOS to claim IS Florida residency after the first year or so for IS tuition?

Isn't the difference minuscule enough for it to not matter in the long run? They said they would eliminate that difference all together in the next 4-5 years.

For 2014-2015 it was about 7-8,000 difference which would be worth it to me but yeah I do remember them saying they were going to squeeze the gap. I found some stuff on Fl residency and it says the usual "if you moving for school then no" but ill be married spouse will work filing joint Florida taxes etc so I think it would be worth a try worst case scenario you're back where you started.

Anyone know if they're sill sending out IIs? Would really like to check this school out.
According to the assistant dean of admissions, they wrap up interview invites this final week of February. Hopefully we all get an invitation sometime this week.

Hey everyone, when does the MD/MPH school year begin? May? June?

Thanks- makes me curious how late the alternate list runs 'til and therefore how short of notice some people have to pack up and start school if this is their top choice

Thanks for the info. Do you know if they'll send out rejections as well?

As far as I know the wait lists for all schools / programs run up until the first day of class. I've heard stories from several schools about students getting in as late as a couple days before classes started. I'm sure most of the movement comes in early May after students with multiple acceptances have to pick a school, but its not over til its over.

Didn't say anything about rejections. Just that they'll finish combing through applications for the final batch of interview invites by the end of February, so (my guess is that she was implying) that you'll know whether you can assume rejection if you haven't been invited to interview by the first week of March.

Does anyone know how long it was before they were invited to the accepted students Facebook group? I was accepted about a month ago but haven't gotten the group invite yet.

~12 days for me

I wouldn't get too worked up about it tho. They probably just do everyone that was accepted the prior month at the first of every month or something.

For all ya'll who received scholarships:

When did you interview?
The only person I know who got a scholarship interviewed late November.

Did you send a request to Mike or Derek?

That was weird. Portal wasn't working and now it is.

Weird weird weird.

Haha yeah, i just edited my post. Working fine now. You've gotta be kidding me lmao.

@ current students, is there a difference between the Rail and the Metromover? I'm looking at apartments and for example near Axis in Brickell there is a Brickell Station Rail Northbound and then a Brickell Metromover Station. Will both of these take me to the medical school? I'm looking at apartments close to stations, but I don't want to get an apartment next to Rail when that doesn't get me what I need.

The Metrorail is what gets you to the medical school.

Do you know how the public transportation is in general? Is it advisable to have a car or is that not really necessary?
Well, I wouldn't take a bus to the beach ... public transportation isn't the most reliable in Miami.
I'm a local living in the suburbs, though, so a car for me would be a must.

Do we even have a chance at an acceptance if we're interviewing in March? if not, does anyone know how much movement the alternate list generally experiences?

Thank you! How much is the metrorail service do students purchase a monthly/yearly pass?
I wouldn't be able to tell you. I'm, unfortunately, just a knowledgeable local (not a current or future Miller student)

Looks like $56.25 a month for college students... any current or future students know the cost of metrorail for UMMSM students? @DrZeke @LeftShifted

The Brickell metromover takes you only within the Brickell/Bayside/Downtown area while the Brickell Station Rail Northbound takes you north of Brickell all the way to Palmetto. To answer your question, you will be able to use the metrorail to get to the medical campus if you get on the brickell northbound station and hop off at the Civic Center station. It should take you at most five minutes to arrive at the campus if you are walking.

Having lived in Miami all my life, though, I'll be honest and let you know that it can be pretty unpleasant if you travel in Miami without a car. The metrorail and metromover only go to limited areas of Miami. To go westward, for example, you need the bus system and it is often very unreliable. That, in addition to the unbearable heat/humidity that we experience throughout the year, make it really time consuming and uncomfortable to get the full Miami experience.

If I am not wrong, I believe the 56.25 price is the same for college and graduate students. Students at local colleges, universities and vocational schools pay the same fare for the monthly easy pass, which is half off the regular price.

Thank you for your reply. I am definitely taking a car, just trying to decide if I want TWO cars for my wife and me. She takes the car to work and I metro to class would be ideal, so I have been looking at apartments close to stations. However, 56.25/month might not even be worth the rail, I would probably pay half that in gas driving. If I decided to bring both cars, that would increase locations I could rent from and probably find cheaper rent as well.

Don't forget to factor in parking ... I think they said it was $60 a month.

I've read that having more than one car in Brickell or Downtown is a nightmare (finding parking garages, fees, etc. are too much of a hassle). Let the wife be the primary user of the car, and be aware of when you need to use it.

It would be a nightmare for sure. The whole idea behind two cars would be to not live in the brickell area, but rather somewhere cheaper that isn't limited to proximity to the rail stations.

As instructed, I replied to the acceptance email. Did anyone get a confirmation email afterwards?
