Hey guys,

In order to be considered for Academic Scholarships here at Miller, do I have to complete a FAFSA?

So I was doomed by interviewing in January? Well that's really annoying.

I just called the admissions office too. They said they won't reveal where on the alternate list you are ranked. Just kept giving me the "we will contact you sometime in between now and matriculation if you get an offer" statement. At least they still accept update letters and LOI's.

During my interview, we were told that that the deans understood that students often had to move forward with other schools because it was getting to be told. I remember being told that if we were placed on the alternate list, then we could call in like May/june and we would be told if there was a chance that we'd come off based on our location on the list and how things had been moving.

I'm not surprised they didn't tell you now.
 
I interviewed Jan 12 and they said that we would hear back yesterday (feb 4) but I didn't get a call or email. I called the admissions office and was told that the adcom just met yesterday.

Did anyone else who interviewed Jan 12 hear back?

Just check your status and until it says "final decision has been reached" don't count on getting any news.
 
That's the thing, it says "final decision has been reached" since at least Monday which was when I first checked

Maybe they haven't gotten to you yet. I didn't get my alternate list email until about 6:45 PM EST. You should definitely call them in 1 week (like it says on your status) if you don't receive any kind of notification.

hmm no email in spam folder? did you tell the person on the phone that your status said a final decision had been reached?

I didn't say that specifically, but the person on the phone looked up my amcas id # and then told me

Do you know if it's merit-based scholarships or need-based scholarships that are given out in April? I've heard that merit-based scholarships were give out in December.

I don't want to go into another tirade about my decision, but how would you feel if some complete rando told you how you should or shouldn't feel about something personal to you?

Oh, and you'll need to fill out a FAFSA to be considered for ANY kind of aid, whether that be loans or scholarships.

Yeah who knows... I can't imagine NOBODY on SDN receiving merit though...
 
For the MPH portion, is it typical for the day to conclude before 2:30pm? Can you leave on your own time after the lunch with medical students concludes?

That is what a large portion of us did.
 
Regarding process of acceptances: From what I remember, the committee goes through everyone they interviewed as well as all the 'waitlisted' candidates at every meeting. All interviewees have a score. Once they're done discussing and scoring the new batch of interviewees, they go through the scored list and accept the top 20. This happens at every date.

Just wanted to make sure we were all on the same page with this.

So I may still have a chance? That's somewhat reassuring. I didn't get that impression from my interview day, but maybe I missed it.

That's about exactly what they told me on my interview day. Everyone scored and they take top 20 each round. Although I'm sure they have to also meet their certain quotas such as male:female ratio, diversity of the class, etc. So it might not be quite as simple as just top 20. Has anyone been accepted from waitlist though?

Yes. And the waitlist is ranked. They just go down the order of how your entire application (including interview) was scored. Remember, you have to hit a certain score to be interviewed, and then the interview is factored into the score as well.

Sorry if it has been asked before, but which days of the week does UM hold interviews?
 
Just got an interview invite!!! This was one of my top schools because of its MD/MPH program. Not sure if interviewing this late in the game would only mean I'm interviewing for an interview slot in that program. Insights from anyone? I'll likely interview anyway since I don't have any acceptances anywhere yet, but I wanted to get a feel for things from all of you. By the way, my choices are Mar 2&3 or Mar 16&17

One of the good things about interviewing here is that the Dean told us there is actually quite a bit of movement off the waitlist. Also, the people who are admitted to both MD and MD MPH will have to choose just one, causing more spots to open.

Congrats, I'm in the same boat as you...just got an II this morning and chose the 3/16-17 slots for the MD/MPH interviews! To those of you who have already completed this, is there just 1 interview (on either campus/day) or 2 interviews (on each campus/day)? Thanks!

I interviewed for both, and there was only one interview. Some of us interviewed on the first day and others on the second depending on if your interview is at the main campus or the regional campus 🙂

Hi everyone! I got an interview for MD and MD/MPH yesterday and will be going on March 2nd and 3rd. If there are any girls that want to share a room and drive up with me to the Palm Beach campus, please PM me! 🙂
 
Sorry for being a bit too lazy to search through this whole thread (I'm doing that now), but can anyone offer some insight into the regular MD interviews here? As I understand it, it's a 60-ish min. long interview with one interviewer, and it seems to be mostly conversational about your experiences and maybe some healthcare/ethics stuff.

Although my interview isn't for a while, any "last minute advice"?

Edit: Did anyone provide updates during their interview and, if so, in what format? I have some grades and activities to update but... it's quite a lot of grades, I don't know if just listing them off will work (or maybe it's not important unless I'm on the waitlist?).

Yeah the interview is a single one-hour interview with one of the committee members who scored your application pre-interview. Its a mix of conversation covering various aspects of your application and moral/ethical healthcare questions. I briefly mentioned major updates during my interview and then e-mailed a one-page single-spaced combined update / letter of interest to admissions later in the week.

Mar 16-17 group: Anyone want to carpool/go in on a rental car? I'll let you choose the radio station! 😉 I figure it's a good way to save some coin.

I'm not sure how the MD/MPH interviews work, but if you're going to the admissions office for interviews for one of the days, SpringHill Suites was a great option because they picked me up at the airport, took me to the hotel, then to the interview and back to the airport after. I believe for MPH you do another interview day elsewhere don't you? At least one of your days would be covered though...

Yeah, on day 2 we head to the JFK Medical Center in Palm Beach County (an hour north of Miami.) I appreciate your input though, I may still be able to use it to my benefit! I think I might just use their free shuttle services on Monday then pick up a rental car on Monday afternoon when the interview day is finished and use it on Tuesday (and maybe Monday night to find a good place to get some great food!)

One needs some form of transport to get to the site on the 2nd day for MD/MPH. Renting a car for a couple of people is way cheaper than taking a cab.

Also, it means you can go to the beach for a bit after the interview on monday!
 
The greatest thing I have learned in this application cycle is that Springhil Suites is THE hotel to go for when interviewing:

Free Shuttle from Airport to Hotel
Free Shuttle from Hotel to Interview
Free Shuttle back to Airport

(Penn, Miami, etc.)
