2014-2015 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Dean Weisman told us yesterday that we can definitely call them and ask for an estimation of where we are on the alternate list. "You should probably hold off on starting your lease in city XYZ" or "I don't think you'll move up much before August" were 2 example replies he told us were possible, depending on the candidate's situation. Dean Weisman also told us letters of intent were acceptable for anyone on the alternate list.

is it true that students who applied ot the MD-MPH program find out earlier than the regular MD students? I thought i read somewhere that they are invited to interview earlier and notified by February...is this true?

Oh well... I guess that's new. In the past they were not revealing wait list place.

I am not sure if they are revealing rankings on the alternate list, at least for now. I called the office yesterday and they said all the rankings were confidential. That might change after may or june as alternate list applicants have to make decisions at that time. I have to agree with DrZeke, false hope of being on the waitlist is way worse than being rejected. I just wished that Miami would give quartile rankings so we could all have realistic hopes.

That makes more sense to me. I believe after May 15th there might be an extremely vague reference to whether you will be lucky or not,

DrZeke, would you happen to know whether updates can change your "rank score"?

I am pretty sure that once you are scored you are scored. But then after May 15th it helps to let the office know you're still interested in attending.

I remember dean weisman saying to send updates to schools if you are waitlisted specifically so you can increase your "score" and potentially move up the waitlist. He said to avoid sending trivial things because they may just throw that out, but substantial updates will help!

Yes. Absolutely update, unless a school specifically instructs you not to. This is general advice, not just specific to Miami.

Sorry if this was answered earlier and I missed it, but does anyone know if they accept pre-interview updates?

Side note: Would you guys send an update if you've already been offered an interview?

Submitted two papers and had another one conditionally accepted so have a few things I can update them with.

Yes it helps to send updates that are legitimate and Dean Weisman may keep track.

Did you already go to your interview? If so I would update them now.

If not, bring an updated CV with you and submit it to the admissions office when you arrive.

Nope, haven't interviewed yet. I might just submit it online if I write out a letter. I feel like I could probably tie it into the post interview thank you letter? I'll have more of a plug for the school then I think.

can someone who traveled from OOS for an MD/MPH interview graciously comment on how they planned their trip/how it went (i.e- which airport you flew into, what area did you stay in, did you rent a car/how did you get to your two interviews, any pointers for someone who's never been to Miami). I have an interview next month. So excited to turn this into a little vacation but want to make sure I get the interview logistics down. 🙂

Thank you sooo much in advance!

I flew into MIA, rented a car, and stayed with a student in Brickell for the night before. Then I drove up north for the MPH interview and stayed with another host and then I flew out of the airport there FLL I believe. It was really easy and I had time to chill at South Beach before heading up which was nice.

It was cheapest for me to fly in and out of FLL, so I flew in on Sunday, rented a car and drove down to Miami. I stayed at the Springhill across the street from campus (it was pricey, but such a nice hotel). After my interview, I drove up to the West Palm Beach area and stayed with a student host. Tuesday afternoon I drove down to Ft Lauderdale and flew out of FLL. I flew out late (around 8-9pm) so I spent some time on the beach in the afternoon before I went to the airport 🙂

Thank you both so much! Yeah, my friend recommended Spirit and Frontier Airlines and they both fly into and out of FLL. Will definitely consider renting a car.

As a local to South Florida, I will warn you that driving in Miami is stressful to say the least...especially getting to UM. Please keep that in mind. The drivers are very aggressive, and are more likely to be reckless than not. Just be careful. The drive from the FLL airport to MIA will probably take you between 25-30 minutes assuming minimum traffic. Just fyi*

Lol if they aren't from Miami it will it will take 35-45 minutes. Even if you are from Miami, 25 minutes is with definite speeding. If you have time to spare and don't mind driving on a fast paced highway ( AKA I-95) then yeah, fly into FLL. If you rather just spend the few extra bucks and not worry, fly into MIA. Also one ways are great and sometimes you can drop your rental car at the other airport for not much more $$.

Thanks for the advice! I'm planning to arrive a few days early to take in the area. I'm from LA, so no stranger to traffic and crazy aggressive drivers. Thinking of arriving in MIA and flying out FLL

I'm not from Miami. Everyone warned me about the traffic. When you come from someplace like LA, Houston, NYC - the traffic in Miami is a joke lol

I cannot stand the drive into Miami from central Florida, particularly the last 30-40 odd miles. Then of course the commuting within Miami lol.

That's on I-95 though, I'm too cheap to take the turnpike.

Does anyone have information on the diversity scholarship? I'm interested in how much it is typically for, and when they are usually announced. Has anyone applied for this yet? Thanks!

Make sure to include the charges that spirit has for luggage/carry on etc.

Jetblue also goes to FLL and it's a great airlines.

I'm flying to FLL and hanging out for a few days before interviewing on the 26/27. I have student hosts, but if anyone needs a ride from miami to atlantis, then let me know!

I noticed that! The $30 to bring one carry-on is sneaky. I ended up booking with JetBlue too. How exciting, good luck!

II just now, have always loved Miami! At this point though, interviewing probably early February, am I just kind of interviewing for a spot on the alternate list?

Nope, they told us they accept the top 20 people at every acceptance date (there's 10 of them) so that they have 200 accepted candidates in April and like 100-ish on the alternate list. You are never interviewing just to get on the alternate list. Miami only interviews those who they are seriously considering accepting.

When were you complete?

Good to hear. I honestly really like U Miami and would love to attend this fall based on what I've read about the school. Really pumped for this interview now!

When were you complete?

Complete way back in mid-August.

How did you set up a student host?

Who is still waiting to hear back? I interviewed 12/19, i just want to know if i can expect to hear back on the Jan 21st or if i have to wait until Feb 4th. I don't want to have to pay the tuition deposit at another school if I don't have to.

So anyone from a prior interview day waiting to hear back on the 1/21?

I interviewed 12/5, and I am still waiting. Honestly, until my portal changes to final decision, I don't think I will find out.

I interviewed mid November still waiting for a decision... Don't get your hopes up

Damn it, gotta cut a check for $1500 now...
Is that a nonrefundable deposit for a DO school? I've seen someone else post about having to deposit $2000 at a DO school with no chance of refund.
