2014-2015 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Not sure what's going on! You haven't even received a letter, right? I'm surprised at how hesitant the office is to release your decision.... I think the next decision day is sometime in April.

Nada. They keep saying "we're sending it today" every time I call them, but nothing.

Admissions office staff said I'd get an email with my decision, so it's probably a w/l anyway since acceptances are delivered via phone call, no?

I have a feeling my interviewer didn't like being called out and admissions didn't take kindly to it either.
Ah yikes! My letter came 2 weeks late so it could be lost in the mail, but it seems like they're trying to tactfully skirt the question...

Hey guys! Interviewed last week and now my portal status says:
"Your applications and interview report will be reviewed a final time by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
Decisions are usually made within 4-6 weeks of the interview. You will be notified by cell phone, e-mail and/or standard mail."

Is this just standard post-interview?

Yes. There is also a "final decision has been made" status that you will get 2 days before one of their 10 decision dates.

Thanks! Kind of frustrating that they take so long to review apps.... The longest wait time of any of the schools I interviewed at!

Shocked to have received such a late II this morning, dates available are every week until the end of March. Excited to be given the opportunity to interview at one of my top schools, but I can't help but feel like this is an interview for a w/l position.

Congrats on the interview!!! It's been said before but it's worth saying again ...
Unless if you are told that you are interviewing for the waitlist (some schools do), good rule of thumb is to assume that you are interviewing for a seat!
Good luck 🙂!

It feels like a long time when its a school you love, and I'm sorry that you've had to wait longer to hear back from other schools. Feeling your pain!
Lol it's okay. I don't have any more schools to wait on post-interview, so it's all good. Just gotta play the waitlist game now lololol.

thanks! 5:25, super friendly M4 notified me
Congrats! Do you mind telling me when you interviewed? I interviewed feb 13 and they told us the earliest date we would find out would be March 11th.

early Feb, I was placed on alternative list mid/late Feb!

After waiting since December, I finally have the decision of being waitlisted. Very much expected as I am pretty sure my interviewer didn't like me from the get go, but Miller is such an amazing school!! Love the school, HATE the admissions staff(rude) and my interviewer.

Why do they say it's 4-6 weeks when the next committee meeting is April 8th. That makes no sense especially if you interviewed mid feb

I still haven't received a decision and apparently won't for a few more weeks.

This admissions staff and office is gawd awful. Seriously, why have specific wordage in the portal message if you're not going to honor it?

Interviewed on 02/09 and still under the "4-6 weeks review" status. Looks like there's more waiting to do until the April decision date.

Hey guys,

Trying to find info about Miami fin aid. The website and fin aid office were rather vague on everything.

Anyone know if there is a base loan/what the specifics are for Miami fin aid?

Can any current Miami students give me insights/examples of some packages? I would love it if you could PM me.

Thanksssss!

According to this link, 32% of students receive some sort of grants/scholarships.

Merit scholarships are given in increments of $5,000 dollars, all the way up to full tuition.

Both Merit and Need based grants are tuition restricted (i.e. can't be applied to other parts of the COA).

Loans are figured out starting around April.

I do not believe there is a base loan/unit loan.

Need based loans aren't assessed until much later in the year - around the time of matriculation. (This sounded odd when I was told, but they confirmed it multiple times. I'd be happy if someone could contradict this).

MS1 here chiming in: Nobody will be able to contradict this - if your taking out student loans and not on any kind of scholarship, don't expect any cash flow to come your way until probably a few minutes after you're elbow deep in your cadaver. For the 70% or so not on scholarship, you get the money sometime within the first week to two weeks of class.

So those on scholarship receive expedited aid? :meh:

Has anyone received word on merit scholarships or are they releasing these later in April?

My flight for Miami leaves tomorrow morning!!! I'm so excited for my interview this week!! Looking forward to seeing some of you out there!
Good luck!! I was super excited flying in too. You are gonna love it!

Thanks for chiming in! Your insight is greatly appreciated 🙂

I know loans aren't disbursed until after matriculation, but from what I understand even decisions about who gets need based institutional/donor loans aren't made until around then. Meaning, we have to arrange to borrow whatever we need in Stafford loans, and if the school eventually determines we'll receive need based loans, the amount of our Stafford loans will then be adjusted. For example, if you take a $20,000 Stafford loan, and Miami decides to award you $5,000 in need based loans, your Stafford loan would be adjusted to $15,000 ... but you won't find out about that until around matriculation.

The problem with that - and the reason I hope someone can contradict me on this point - is because it makes it very difficult to accurately figure out what my financial situation will be at Miami, which makes it harder to decide between schools 🙁.

That ... would surprise me. I think @LeftShifted meant that your scholarship money is "given" to you as soon as you receive your letter, but everyone gets their loans after matriculation.

Merit scholarships are already being given out.

Ah, I understand now. That was actually quite a point of infuriation for me - I basically had to spend my summer to prepare to move to Miami, finding out only 2-3 weeks or so before the actual move the dollar amount I was getting. That being said, I'm pretty sure all students not receiving scholarship money are able to borrow the full cost of attendance (maximum budget), so don't stress. Whatever is listed as the max budget for 2015-2016 is about what will be disbursed to you.

Some caveats: there is an origination fee that is deducted from that amount (different rates for GradPlus and Stafford). Also, there are mandatory fees - while these are included in the budget sheet, some are deducted in full during term 1, and others are divided between the first and second term. What this means is you will have a smaller loan refund check in the fall, and a larger loan refund check in the spring.

Also, and this is a more general comment for everyone on this thread: if you're debating b/w Miami and someplace else...this place is freaking awesome, and I could go on for days about how awesome it is, but instead I'll leave you with this: at 2nd look and my interview, couldn't tell if the current students were pulling a marketing game on me or if it was really a great place to attend medical school - the admissions committee really does a fantastic job picking quality people to be your classmates, and I realized that the current students were in fact truly happy to be here, and we're trying to sell me on the school - it was just how they felt about the place.

Need more proof? I was diagnosed with leukemia 2 weeks before orientation: the administration has been immensely supportive of my decision to NOT take medical leave, and my classmates have been my rock of support - all 149 of my classmates.

Go Canes!

I have a feeling my interviewer didn't like being called out and admissions didn't take kindly to it either. I'm so lucky I had an acceptance walking into this interview. Pretty annoyed that they called me all the way to Florida to be so freaking rude.

Hmmm............worse admissions office than Georgetown? I think that deserves a thread.....lol.... These posts reminded be of jalby's epic thread which he started back in 2001 and he still keeps it going!!! http://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/worst-admissions-staff-in-the-country.12212/

Miami is definitely a great school to attend, I have several friends who go there now and they really love it!

Officially withdrew my application and from my interview. Just didn't seem right for me. Good luck to everyone else!

Thanks!

I interviewed in December and was accepted in February. I don't want to disclose the exact amount but it's significant and my stats are LM 75+

EDIT: It was actually early January when I interviewed not December.

Hey everyone! I have an interview here this coming Monday and was wondering if anyone who has interviewed here could PM some tips/background into how the interview goes and what I should expect. As always, good luck to all and congrats to those who have been accepted so far!

Obviously different people can have very different experiences ( :poke: @ridethecliche), but here's my take:

Out of all the places I interviewed, Miami's interview was by far the most enjoyable, low stress, laid back, and conversational. My interviewer literally opened the conversation by telling me that they were one of my "cheerleaders" and had been one of the three faculty members who reviewed my app (SOP at Miami is to have three separate people look at everyone's app) and recommended that I should be offered an interview. All they wanted from our conversation were more reasons to go back to the other adcom members and push for an acceptance. You can't get friendlier and more awesome than that.

We went over my application, spoke about who I was as a person, answered some hypothetical ethical questions, I asked some questions, and before I knew it an hour had passed and we were done.

They did a great job of selling the school to me - although I wish they had spent some more time on their curriculum. The deans of admissions are funny. They will show you a video about the weather that will make you laugh (or cringe, if you don't like that sort of humor. For the record, I laughed).

As for tips ... just be yourself. I know people say that a lot, but it's really the only tip that matters. The fact that you were invited to interview shows Miami believes you are academically and otherwise qualified to matriculate at their school. The main thing they're looking for now is to make sure you're normal and to see if you're a good "fit." Be comfortable and confident in who you are (but don't be an @$$) and let that shine through in your interview. If you can show that to whoever is interviewing you ... you'll be fine.

Good luck 🙂👍!!!
