2014-2015 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
straight loans here as well... hurts my heart 🙁. Anyone know the interest rate for the fed dir unsub?

So uh anyone else get the financial aid package today? I got the email but too afraid to look lol

Me too! All loans as well. I also still haven't received the packet in the mail that they said they would send and I didn't get a confirmation for the email I sent accepting my position. Anyone else in the same position?

Does anyone know why the estimated "room" costs go up for 3rd years but are the same for 1st, 2nd, and 4th years? Away rotations?
Because it would be for 12 months instead of like 10?

Yes, yes, and yes

Edit: second thought, I did receive a confirmation email for reserving my spot about 5 days afterwards.

I was planning on doing a 12 month lease and expected this to be the norm?

It is the norm, but the cost of attendance does not factor in students signing 12 month leases...and the financial aid will not be adjusted to cover this. This is why I am living extremely frugally right now in order to swell my savings account to cover those extra months!

Do you guys plan to loan out the whole 72,000?

Just got accepted from the alternative list today at 8:36 am! Got the call from Dean Weisman! SUPER EXCITED!! Going to be a cane!
Interviewed February 13th and was waitlisted March 11th. Sent a letter of Intent yesterday (4/13/15), not sure if that was the reason for the acceptance though 🙂
Congrats! Were you accepted MD or MD/MPH?

That makes sense. It's incredibly annoying. But it makes sense...Ugh.

A lot of the students I talked to at second look were living within the cost of attendance without any outside support, so it sounds like it's definitely sufficient for a 12 month lease and living expenses. I think the average rent is around $1100 and <$100 for utilities. If you split it over 12 months there's $1050 budgeted for rent in the COA. There's also $200/month budgeted for transportation, but a metro pass is only $50, so you could easily make up the difference right there. I wouldn't worry too much about it, just make a budget and stick to it.

Whoa! It looks like tuition + fees went up ~ $2,000. Ouch.

The OOS tuition on mine totals to ~$41,500 which is exactly what has been listed on the COA on the financial aid website for as long as I can remember. The change in total COA is because the COA in the financial aid package includes the loan disbursement fees for the Stafford and Grad PLUS government loans. You have to borrow more than the actual cost of attendance so that you will be left with what you actually need after the aforementioned origination fees are taken out.

I'm in-state. Tuition used to be listed as around $35,800, now it's around $37,100. So only about 1.3k increase actually.

Either way, I suppose I can't really complain once I look at it from an OOS point of view ... at least they didn't raise it any higher on you guys 🙂.

Wish I was in state

They're done interviewing right? You would think they would have sent out mass rejections by now, but it says on my portal that my file has been reviewed and a final decision has not yet been made. It had been under review for months and just switched today.
Is this still your status? I have the same exact message 😳

those of you who sent LOIs--
did yall send LOIs to admissions committee? and email or snail mail?

I sent mine via snail mail on nice letterhead and also followed up with a digital copy to add to my file.

It's probably been answered already, but I don't feel motivated to scan a bunch of previous pages: do we know if acceptances off of the wait list are always made by phone call, or do some come via email?

I think everyone who posted they got accepted on here received a phone call.

For those of you looking to find a place to live, please look at Caneslist: http://caneslist.net/

This is where many current UMMSM students who are looking for roommates put up ads, and going with one of these listed apartments can make your search go a lot more smoothly. I'm also mentioning this because I am a rising 3rd year and am currently looking for new roommates as well (preferably guys). My ad is among those, so PM me if you want to know the details.

Never mind, answered my own question.

For CaneLink, are we supposed to receive a physical letter in the mail? I received an e-mail with a link to the orientation website but have no information on how to set up a CaneLink account.

I also never got it in the mail but I emailed tech support and they gave me my log in!

Still on the alternate list.. Im usually one of those people who just looks at sdn posts without actually contributing. Can everyone please start updating their status on this thread so we can all help eachother get through this waiting period. That would be sooo wonderful.

I would if I could, dude.

Did the rest of you who got your financial aid packages receive that in the mail, email, or through Canelink? I don't see anything and haven't received anything either. Called in and waiting for a response.

It was an email with instructions for how to log in and access your "award" through Canelink. It probably depends on when you submitted your FAFSA and need-based/diversity scholarship form.

So Miami is done interviewing, correct? I never heard anything from them since submitting a secondary in August. My portal still says my application is under review.

Given the fact that it's almost may... yeah... They've been done for a fair bit.

I thought you were done with this thread? But yes, Miami has indeed been done interviewing since the end of March.

Congrats to all those who were accepted! Just wanted to throw out that I loved this school when I visited (especially all of the facilities + the city of Miami)! Only thing I didn't like was the (lack of) friendliness of their admissions office but that can EASILY be overlooked if I am a student there. Hope to hear good news sometime soon!

I am a current UM student so I am already on CaneLink. I'm currently searching for the email but it seems when I go to look at my financial info, everything for the next year is unavailable. And I turned in my FAFSA rather early.

Does anyone know if there is a Facebook group for accepted students? If so, could you share the link?
