2014-2015 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

I know I've posted this before on here, but for those of you looking for housing, I am a rising 3rd year in the MD program and am still looking for another roommate (preferably a guy) to fill a 3 BD/2 BR condo in Brickell. The unit comes fully furnished with some nice furniture, rent is very reasonable for Brickell, the building has all the standard amenities (gym, pool) and lease starts June 20 so this would be perfect timing for incoming MD/MPHers. Please PM me for more details if you are interested. Im going to be moving fast with the lease so I would need to hear back quickly.
 
I hate to say it, but I think my optimism for getting in this year is just about entirely gone. I'm trying really hard to hang in there, but it's so deflating to wake up each morning without a voice mail or email from Miami (I'm out west so I sleep in until about 10 am by Miami standards.) Sorry to be a pessimist folks, just have to vent for a minute.

I understand. It's okay to feel that way, especially since we don't know our relative spot on the waitlist. Keep your head up, tho! It's not over til it's over. Plus, at the end of this month, we can call them and ask where we are if it comes down to that.

I feel the same way. I'm just trying to do anything possible to keep my mind off of it. Stalking sdn definitely doesn't help me feel better and it is not going to make it more likely for me to get pulled from the list. Hopefully we will get some happy news soon. :xf:

You're right, there's nothing else we can do. Waiting is such an interesting calisthenic for one's character development. My brother, aware of my plight and admitted anxiety said to me the other day, "don't cheat yourself of the lessons to be learned and the growth to be had from this experience." I can't affect whether or not I get in, but I can choose my attitude and my trajectory from this experience, regardless of the outcome. Thanks to both you and @Ace Khalifa for staying upbeat

I do not. I'm wait listed here (UMMSOM) and at the University of Utah. My "giving up hope" partially means I can read the signs and know an overall rejection this year is more and more likely with each passing day. I'm accepting reality and deciding that I really should start gearing up with reapplying this next cycle. This year was my second year of applying to schools.

@Ginred, Dean Weisman told us on interview day that if you haven't heard about waitlist by end of May or early June, you can give the admissions office a call and they will tell you "Hold on for a little bit, don't commit to your other plans yet" or "Yeah, you should probably commit to your other school/plans." At least, that's what I remember.

Not to be a downer...I hope you get in this year. However, you should have a major plan for next year and seriously question why you haven't gotten in. The worst thing you can do is lie to yourself and get bad advice.
 
looking at the financial aid disbursement dates, it splits the loans into fall and spring semesters. Is the 41,000 tuition per year split into two semesters? 20,000 in august and 20,000 in january like in undergrad? For some reason I was picturing it all up front each year.

Yeah it's split between semesters. If you look at your financial aid package on Canelink it shows you the semesterly allocations that make up the cost of attendance.

Sound advice- self-deception can be such a crippling thing. I'm in the process of honest introspection and outside feedback as I now dig in for another run at it. If the call comes this year, so be it, but I'm going to act like it isn't so I'm not blindsided by a rejection. Upon request, The University of Utah provides unsuccessful candidates with candid feedback on the specific things that they can fix on their application and during their interviews, so that will be helpful as well. I'm sure UMMSOM may be willing to provide some feedback as well if I seek it, which I certainly will.

To those accepted for this year's class: what kind of timeline does UMMSOM give accepted students before they have to decide if they're going to attend or not? The AAMC specifies that, after Apr 30, schools must give a minimum of 5 business days for students to decide whether or not they'll attend a program. Does Miami do the 5 business day thing? More? Just curious.
 
Well i applied here but still havent heard a thing. Considering i did not get an interview as of yet, Im guessing i got rejected. Dussapointing as this was a top choice for me.

The admissions officer who called me said I had 10 days to decide (since I had another acceptance). Taking into account Memorial Day Weekend, I have 6 business days.

Hi I have an important question. I want to know if there's ANY benefit in being considered a florida resident for the MD/MPH program. I've been admitted and have the opportunity to change my residency since Ive been in florida for some time, but I want to know if the trouble is worth it. Any input would be much appreciated, thank you!

Isn't tuition cheaper as FL res
 
Nope for md/mph it's one price .. I'm just wondering if there is any benefit for other things .. Scholarships .. Fees etc
 
Hi everyone. What is the curriculum like at Miller for the 2015 entering class? Is it Pass/Fall? Is there a ranking system? Is the curriculum the more modern block based (integrated) curriculum or is it a traditional curriculum?

No, I didn't even apply there. I am accepted at another school but am now curious what I missed out on with Miller.
Further points of inquiry: What's the preclinical period like? 1.5 years accelerated or 2 years? If preclinical period is P/F, is it a true P/F or is it P/F with an internal ranking?

Our preclinical curriculum is 2 years. The first semester is pretty traditional, sets the foundation with 8 weeks anatomy/histo/embryo, followed by 5 of biochem/genetics, and finishes up with 6 of micro/path/immuno. After winter break, you start organ modules, which are definitely very integrated. Every module starts with a review of anatomy, then progresses to physiology (which naturally touches back upon your basic sciences), and then pathology. We end every organ module with a patient panel to add some clinical correlates to what we learned.

A note on pass/fail. Before starting med school, I thought pass/fail would be the greatest system. Less pressure, less competition, more free time, no need to kill myself studying... But the reality is, regardless of how your school scores you, you have this little test called "step 1" that will require you to have mastered the preclinical material. So no, we're not a true pass fail. We all care about our grades with respect to the average, because we are ultimately placed into quartiles--a distinction that somehow ambiguously makes it's way into our dean's letter. But at the same time, I don't think any of us would study any differently if we WERE truly only a pass/fail. Of course people are competitive, how do you think we got into med school? But do people walk around sabotaging each other? Lol no

Perhaps I am......and even if I wasn't, it's not pointless because the information provided could be helpful for other applicants applying this cycle that might be considering applying to Miller. Also, it's nice to know what some other good medical schools are doing. So please stop replying to my posts unless you have something informative to say.

If you are considering dropping a med school acceptance then it's a shame someone gave you that opportunity. It's not to be thrown away.

The search function is extremely helpful. This question has been answered multiple times in this thread and the threads that came before it. So yes, technically you are wasting people's time.

In most rotations the shelf exam (standardized nbme) counts for 20-50% of your grade. Then a certain portion is from attending/resident evals... The school is fairly transparent with a syllabus and what not, but in most schools doing well on subjective evals has to do with you, how you work with your team and how you come off. In fact, that's life... But the good thing is that 1st and 2nd year prepare you well for 3rd year and I don't feel like anyone ever placed unreasonable or crazy unfair expectations on me.

Yup, I called and they said the MD/MPH class is full. Waitlist movement will be very minimal, but it does happen.
 
If we inquire about our waitlist position, do we call admissions or Dean Weisman directly?
