2014-2015 University of Pittsburgh Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Do you guys know if there was some loophole used, like signing only 3 on the lease and having 1-2 more people living there. There are some news articles floating around about students getting evicted and landlords getting slapped with massive fines, and we've encountered a few landlords who flat out refuse to toe around the limit. It's given us the heebie-jeebies. :nailbiting:

Yeah, I have no idea if the landlords don't care or there's some legal loophole, but it's not like anyone is quiet about living together with a bunch of other people. There are plenty of houses filled with students on Craigslist and all. I think the real question though is do you really want like 4+ housemates?

can any current Pitt students comment on how many applicants - if any at all - have been accepted off the WL post-May 15th (April 30th this year) deadline in previous years?

@redpanda @Ismet @philip422

Darned if I know. Never been on the admissions committee, but obviously the number of seats moving about this point is getting lower and lower. Being my pretty pragmatic self, I wouldn't be too optimistic on a lot more offers going out (and one that counts is the one that arrives on your doorstep and all).

When I lived with 4 roommates it was a 5 bedroom apartment and we were subletting with 5 people on the agreement. Then again this was in the aforementioned South Oakland where landlords tend not to follow rules (especially apparent with upkeep on the properties...aka not good). I would not try to shove 4-5 people in an apartment built for 3. I understand why that is against zoning rules, in terms of safety/fire code etc.

O of course that makes sense. @unnumzaan and I were looking at 4 people in large 4 bedrooms houses and 5 people in large 5 bedrooms houses in shadyside/sq hill which we didn't understand. Thank you for the info though!

It's probably different every year. I would venture a guess and say between 5-15 students, but I could be (Really) off. If you're still on the WL, especially first tier, send the adcomm emails of interest. Make sure they know you still care! Give them a reason to accept you for one of the final spots.

how did you guys go about securing your apartment if you weren't in pittsburgh? i live in ca and anticipate being out of the country up until july. does anyone have experience scrambling to find places in early august? i don't have much experience in apartment hunting so i was just curious about how that worked out with orientation in august. thanks!

The main issue is that most apartments in the area turn over right around Aug 1 because of the high student population in the area. Therefore, a lot of those apartments are being advertised and shown now, so the inventory is going to be a lot lower if you do it around early August. I would recommend looking and seeing if you could send a future classmate or friend who is nearby to PGH to see things now to maximize the chances of finding something you like.

Did anyone receive confirmation that the school received the admissions deposit?

Was pulled off the waitlist. Pitt made me an amazing financial aid offer as well. Unless something unexpected happens, I will be matriculating! Really excited.

I'm sensing someone matched into his/her top choice! congrats mate!

Historically, there was WL movement this week last year starting tomorrow. Let's hope that's the case again this year. Good luck fellow WL's!
Just wanted to let you guys know that there appears to be a descent amount of spots left! We only have 108 people in the fb group but several of those are not incoming ms1s.

Did anyone's application status recently change from "accepted" into nothing? Also, do we need to send in any health forms? Thanks, in advance.

No my status is still "accepted". But I wouldn't look into that much, probably just system glitch stuff.

And I haven't gotten any correspondence about health forms yet.

Mine did change as well. If I go to the Admissions Data Forms, it tells me that page is only for Admitted Students. I think that if you have paid your deposit and received the "We're glad you chose Pitt," email, I think you're good.

I can't log into the admissions page anymore. Is anyone else also having this problem?

The admissions data forms?

Well when I try to log in to the admissions portal it just says "access denied". But I know for sure that I have accepted my spot and they have the deposit etc. So it is probably a technical issue on their end.

Was in Pittsburgh apartment hunting, so I stopped in admissions. I was told everything is done on admissions' end, and student affairs will now be the ones contacting us. So the next communication we get should be from student affairs about orientation, immunizations, etc.

The office also verified that my deposit was received, but interestingly, I haven't gotten the "Glad you chose Pitt!" email yet. Seems like while everything is getting straightened out for new admits, things appear wonky for some time.

It was that welcome email I got right after the April 30 deadline passed. I figured everyone got that email…That's not really important though. What's important is that you have paid your deposit and satisfied all the other requirements they outlined in the acceptance packet.

Speaking of housing, do any current students or people familiar with Pittsburgh have thoughts about picking a place close to a busway stop (but maybe further away from school) vs a regular bus line? I'm guessing the busway times are going to be more reliable, especially during weekday traffic, but curious to get people's experiences. Thanks!

Haven't lived on a bus way stop, but I think a good question would be whether the bus actually runs during the hours that you want to use it. Would you need it early morning or late at night? On weekends not during the day?

Does Pitt send out information regarding medical forms and such via snail mail? Around when do they do that? I hope to get stuff done before I leave the country.

Are there any other first tiers still waiting?
Waiting. Keep in mind that they want to pick people who are likely to take the offer at this point. I suspect that if you're holding a more competitive acceptance, your chance of being selected is low.

I thought schools can only see whether or not you have been accepted, not where you have been accepted to.

No they can see the names of the places you have been accepted. Perhaps those on the waitlist should send in some continued interest emails. We are still only at 122 in the FB group.

Probably wouldn't hurt to send an update/LOI at this point if you're still waiting.

Are we supposed to get acceptance packets or anything from Pitt? Its been pretty quiet in terms of communication since I submitted my deposit.

Edit: sorry for double post.

Did you get a big envelope with a bunch of letters from various heads in the school plus a photocopy of a paper about the importance of research in medical education (lol)?

Not as of yet!

Hey Guys, just admitted to Pitt Med this past week! Does anyone know how to find/join the class of 2019 fb group? I can't seem to find it when I search...

I read somewhere on Pitt's website that the 2015 or 2016 class got to go white water rafting during orientation! Jelly...

Quick clarification on how the financial aid works here (assuming no merit aid). So after the minimum $25,000 unit loan, the leftover COA expenses are divided between need based grants and loans depending on your FAFSA/other forms correct?

Yup that's basically it.
