2014-2015 University of Pittsburgh Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just withdrew, and feel like I just made a huge mistake. I was very determined to go to Pitt to be part of the humble, practical and yet excellent system. If up to me, I'd sit on this until the last day in April in case I change my mind. But I think I should release my seat so someone else can get it soon enough to go to the second look. Adieu! PittSOM and UPMC. I should be back.

I just creeped on your MDapps, and I just wanted to say that I really respect you and your path. You have some amazing and exciting choices to make going forward. Good luck!

You are too kind. Going from a stay at home mom to med school? You are really inspirational. I think Pitt has a lot of peer support, it'll be a great school! Pittsburgh is more family oriented than many other places I've seen. Hope you'll get in soon and have a wonderful life at school while being a proud mom!

I'm pulling for you to choose Mich 😉 Loved my interview there and will be applying for residency. The vibe there felt very similar to Pitt, it was the only school I loved on the interview trail besides the one I'm at now!

I'll remember that, but honestly now you are making me regretting leaving Pitt ::🙁

Did anyone else get a reminder from Pitt to submit the Admission Data Form, even though they already have and the application status shows that it is completed? Just wondering if it's a glitch or something I need to contact the school about.

Yup.

A few questions for @Ismet and any other current students:
How quickly do the commuter parking lots get filled up? And how reliable is the bus system there? Trying to gauge how much of a hassle commuting to classes may be (in particular from south side flats and shady side). Also, do you know anyone who has lived in the Oak Hill Apartments? If so, what did they think about living there? Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Just found the post on Oak Hill, so never mind about that! Any opinions on South Side Flats, though?

@Just Call Me Doc South side is somewhat inconvenient for getting to school. I think only two people in my class live here. It's pretty cheap and they like their apartments (I believe), but it's definitely a hike, and you might be isolated from some of your classmates who live in Shadyside, Oakland, Bloomfield, etc

Thanks! Good info.

So should we be expecting another WL movement this week since we're approaching end of march?

hey guys! what is the car situation like for first years? i was thinking that if you live in the apartments close to scafie (sorry i can't remembe the name right now), walking shouldn't be that difficult, yeah?

Scaife (pronounced "Scayf") 🙂

You'll be fine without a car for the 1st 2 years if you live in Darragh or somewhere along a main bus route (generally Oakland, Shadyside, Squirrel Hill). Many people even get away without a car in 3rd year, but it's hard as there are several rotations where you might be placed somewhere not on a direct bus route or you have to get there before the buses start running. Also things like shopping, groceries, going out are easier with a car, but you can get by with buses or by relying on friends cars.

Does anyone know when housing starts to get harder to find? I'm wondering when if waiting until june/july would mean all the closer housing would be taken.

Waiting until June/July should be fine. There are options in North Oakland and Shadyside that don't rent to undergrads so they don't fill up early (undergrads have to look for a place in like November or they won't find anything for the following year close to campus)

Edit: If you're likely coming to Pitt, I'd start looking into what you might like. Many people use second look weekend to set up tours for apartments so they don't have to come back to do so. But FWIW I didn't sign my lease until near the end of June.

Just got a call from a student wanting to see if I had any questions but I don't know how to return their call 🙁. The number is just a general Pitt number thats hangs up on you after telling you this.

Hm, that's weird about the number. But feel free to ask here or you can always PM me if you have any questions 🙂

Anyone know if waitlist movement will occur this week?

Hi,

Congrats on your acceptances to Pitt! I am a current Pitt Med student about to move for residency and I have an on-campus 1 bedroom/1 bathroom apartment at Darragh St. available for rent starting from June 1st, 2015 (for a 2 month lease but can be extended to a 1 year lease). It is literally a 1-2 minute walk to the medical school (Scaife Hall). All utilities included with in-unit washer/dryer.

It is open only to Pitt medical and dental students. Please PM if interested in further details. Thanks!

If anyone is taking the 11 AM United flight from Newark to Pitt on the Thursday before second look and wants to hang out/sit with me, PM me!

If i remember correctly it said something about business casual.
Sounds stupid, but I'm having trouble trying to picture what kind of blouse I should be wearing with my dress pants to be appropriately dressed. Any ideas/suggestions?

Any blouse really. Can't go wrong with blouse + cardigan for business cas

After much deliberation I finally withdrew today. Pittsburgh is not the place for me right now. Maybe we'll do this song and dance again for residency!

Good luck everyone!

Thank you scribblers for making that decision early. Here's to hoping I get in on one of those WL movements.

Anyone speak with admissions this week? Status on next WL movement?

Unless you guys hear directly from Admissions about WL movement, I (unfortunately) wouldn't get your hopes up. I was hoping for WL movement at this time last year, and it didn't happen - likely because second look is so close. We have a lot of people coming for Second look, and if Pitt accepted a bunch of new students only a week before SL happens, then there's the possibility of getting inundated with more students coming (without the food or hosting opportunities available). Maybe Admissions isn't so worried about that, and maybe because of the earlier decision date we actually WILL see movement, but at this point it's hard to say.

Keep hoping, I got into Pitt in June of last year (From the first tier)!

Do you know the estimated number of people coming for second look?

It seems strange because last year by this time they already had significant movement in late March and early April. We had some movement in late February and then nothing. If they really are waiting until after Second look, there will just be one week before April 30th. My intuition says there will either be some movement this week, or they will just hold out until after traffic day and accept a whole bunch of waitlisters in early May.

Anyone have any idea when financial aid packages are supposed to come out?

Edit: Previous post said 1st or second week in april

That's what happened to me 😀
