2014-2015 University of Pittsburgh Application Thread

I was about to snooze my phone alarm... so tired... glanced at the little email notification thing... bleary eyes... INTERVIEW AT PITTSBURGH!?!?
Jumped out of bed, 100% awake. Very excited about this school!
Congrats! Mind sharing when you were complete?

Whooo, congrats on the new interviews!

Wondering the same thing about this mythical host list. When I was invited over a month ago, they had a blank excel sheet which disappeared when I scheduled an interview. Anyone care to share the new host list? :shy:

Submitted the secondary yesterday. 33 MCAT, cGPA 3.90, sGPA 3.99, from the greater Pittsburgh area. Participated in the Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) at Pitt in 2012, and have a letter of recommendation from my PI (who is a medical school lecturer). Also, I have a letter from an otolaryngologist that graduated from Pitt Med. Praying for an II; Pitt is my top choice.

Arrived in Pittsburgh today since I have a relative here I am staying with. What a beautiful city!!! As an Iowan girl I am not a huge fan of huge cities but Pittsburgh is big yet manageable and spread out, beautiful and cultured! LOVE this place. I had no idea there were so many rivers here and bridges! I read about the bridges on the website but still did not expect such beauty! I also visited the campus and am in LOVE

It's funny, the place is hilly like San Francisco (visited 3 weeks ago for a conference) but so much cleaner and more charming. Can totally see myself here for the next four years and can't wait for it! 😍

Pittsburgh is a city with a small-town feel, especially because of the neighborhoods, each of which has its own culture and community. I'm from rural PA and I've felt very much at home here for over 6 years 🙂 Hopefully you get to explore some more!

Current MSI here. I just started (obviously) but if anyone has any questions about the school or app process feel free to send me a message!

Hilly is no good for biking...but I'd give up biking for Pitt any day.

A TON of people bike here. There are routes to and from school that don't involve the huge hill.

I don't bike so I can't say if Pittsburgh is extremely bike friendly or not, but I think the city is moving towards more bike lanes and bike safety on the roads. I get really annoyed at the bikers who think they're above traffic laws or bike on the sidewalks :nono: but for the most part cars and bikes are pretty good about sharing.

You can certainly bike to/from Pitt if you live off-campus in the right areas. Fifth Ave, which is the main thoroughfare for buses through North Oakland and Shadyside, isn't that hilly. I live a bit above Fifth but it's a slight hill that I could certainly bike if I had one with me.

The street that goes up to the med school is very steep, but those of us who bus to campus just enter through the hospital and take elevators/escalators (although you'll have some killer leg muscles if you climb up the hill everyday).

Keep in mind that Pitt students get access to public transportation for free (it's included in some $180-ish fee you pay per semester), so many of us take the bus to campus if we live a bit further out. If you're lucky, you'll have multiple lines to choose from. I've also used the buses to get to/from the airport, to downtown, Pirates game, Steelers game, etc. And UberX and Lyft just got approval from the governor and are very cheap/useful if you want to go somewhere where a bus may take a bit longer.

That's good to know. I probably will do the same using the hospital entrance.

I contacted someone on the excel list and have everything arranged for my stay, so I think it's perfectly fine to do that.
Could someone message me the student housing excel file? My interview is approaching quickly and I have no where to stay! Thanks.

Is Pitt true nonrolling admissions? (Before January)

What I mean is there any advantage at all in interviewing earlier (in september) than later (in December)? There would be an advantage if they made decisions immediately after the interviews then just didn't release it till January. But do they actually wait till January to make the decisions, so that you have an equal chance whether you interview in September versus December?

This is urgent, please answer quickly if you can.

Decisions are released in January but applicants are reviewed throughout the cycle. I would suggest interviewing earlier if you have the option.

II today as well! 7/21 completion

I had such a fantastic time at the interview today! Facilities were amazing, campus was BEAUTIFUL, and everyone was so darn friendly! Especially my fellow interviewees, such awesome and accomplished people! I had a very stress-free conversational student interview and a very nice faculty interview as well. The PBL session was awesome and really nothing to worry about... super chill and great. I hope I make the mark! I would love to go here and I love Pittsburgh more every day I spend here!! 😍

Thank you very much for telling me that information!

So sad I couldn't welcome you to our wonderful city :playful: glad you had a great time here!

What is the group discussion like?

Just attended interview at pittsburgh. Will post a little blurb on my mdapps page for all that are interested.

If you don't feel like reading it, the short story is that Pitt is awesome and people should not stress over interviews at all (just prepare normally, and take it easy).

Anyone have any feel good stories here about people being complete very early to Pitt (early July) and receiving an interview later in the cycle? I'd love to interview here, but no luck so far.

What is the group discussion like?

As 12 applicants we gathered around a table and were given a sheet of paper with a question, which one of us volunteered to read aloud. We were basically presented with a situation in which a brother (who lives close to mom and knows she does not wish to be on a ventillator) and sister (distant but pushing for complete care) disagreed regarding whether continued care should be administered to a widowed mother whose quality of life was likely very poor. Discuss your next steps as the ICU team.

After this discussion we were given a second sheet of paper with a follow-up question. Everyone got to participate and like I said before, it was really chill and low-key. Our facilitator kept emphasizing that we were not being graded.

We talked about the law's standing on this situation, emotional underpinnings of this family dynamic, what our goals as physicians would be, and the circumstances in which we should act the way we planned to. I love bioethics and have had PBL sessions in graduate school regarding research integrity, so this was a lot of fun!

Our faculty facilitator was very hands off with the discussion and only made closing comments. It was a great discussion in response to a classic health policy scenario.

I LOVED your blurb on your MDapps. So eloquent and informative! And my favorite part was the one about our fellow interviewees. I second your thoughts completely. I have always perceived that to be very important because these are my future classmates here, and Pitt did a great job picking out fun, insightful and friendly interviewees. Hope to see you in future interviews, wolverine!

Also note to all future interviewees: use the alternate security checkpoint at the Pittsburgh airport! It's literally empty whereas the regular checkpoint has a huge line in front of it. Just ask the guard where it is and he will direct you. It saves you half an hour! I told many fellow interviewees about this and I hope it came in handy 🙂

BTW someone just PM'd me -- the alternate checkpoint closes at 6 pm! So beware and if your flight is at 8 PM or something and you plan to check in at 6:30 then you have to save extra time to go through the regular checkpoint since the alternate one closes at 6

Random question...
I just checked my application status and it was always invited to complete supplemental application till like a week ago... But it changed to "Application is under review. Please allow 8 weeks from interview date to receive final decision." But I'm not invited to an interview. What does this mean?

They have a new portal application this year and it seems that they are still working on it. I doubt that the status change has much significance. For what is worth, mine changed too. But they also say that I paid the secondary fee by check, which is incorrect.

Well, I WAS kinda sorta a wee bit excited when I saw this status this morning... not so much now haha. Maybe we're ALL about to receive IIs.

+2. I was complete in mid-July. I was assuming that I'd get rejected any day now since I never received an II and the first round of rejections went out this time last year (see the 2013-2014 cycle thread). This status change is making me irrationally hopeful.

+4 ; this "update" in status is giving me a warm tingly feeling in my tummy....and heart 🙂
It's good to know that they are now starting to review it. I didn't know this status existed! Other people who were complete in July not seeing this?

Well I really hope we all get IIs. But at least it's good to know they are reviewing my app since it didn't change anything since July

I pretty much gave up hope here since I was complete on 7/4... Now this gives me just a little bit hope to start to believe again.

I also got the status change. As a heads up, I applied early to Pitt last year and got a rejection email on August 28.

do you mean that last year you got this status change right before you got rejected? or do you mean that you just got the status change this year? thanks!

Whoops, sorry that was pretty unclear. I just got the status change this year (but won't be surprised by a rejection soon since Pitt is pretty much a reach for me). I forget what happened with my statuses last year, but I got my rejection email around this time.

thanks for the clarification!! 🙂 good luck!

Hey guys! Just want to emphasize again that if something weird or unexpected happens with the secondary website or status page, you can call the admissions office to clarify. As someone said above, we have been transitioning to a new system this year and it's still glitchy sometimes, but usually the admissions office won't know unless someone tells them.
