2014-2015 University of Pittsburgh Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey guys! Just want to emphasize again that if something weird or unexpected happens with the secondary website or status page, you can call the admissions office to clarify. As someone said above, we have been transitioning to a new system this year and it's still glitchy sometimes, but usually the admissions office won't know unless someone tells them.

I think we'd all just rather continue to believe this is an impending sign of an interview invite.. Let us have our delusions! 😛

Got the same status change, but I've only been complete for a week! (submitted 8/11, letters in 8/20) Pitt is a huge reach for me, so I just assumed it was a normal (& neutral) "under review" status change

I was complete on 8/10, and my status changed from "invited to complete a secondary" to "under review, please allow 8 weeks from interview date to receive final decision."

Is this indicative of anything?

That's what we all (see previous posts) want to know. Pure speculation, but I say no since it seems it's changing for everyone. No reports of it not changing yet.

Does anyone know how pre-interview updates work at Pitt? I'm beginning a new commitment that I think drastically changes my current application and wanted to let them know.

I would email the office of admissions email with the update. However, make sure it's significant, if you're just starting something that might not change things much, but if it's something like "about to get published" that's pretty significant.

II just now!!! Submitted 7/10, complete 7/15 - don't give up hope, July applicants!

II here too!! Sooo happy! Any current Pitt med students here that can impart some advice/tips for the interview?

Anybody else interviewing 11/17?
Any idea how big the interview groups are?

Relax, be yourself, have fun. Vast majority of interviewers don't ask the hard-hitting questions (politics, difficult ethical scenarios etc), the interviews are quite laid back and conversational. Enjoy lunch, it's almost always a hot lunch and it was the best lunch hands down when I was interviewing. Also take advantage of the current students eating lunch with you and ask lots of questions!

Any idea how big the interview groups are?

About 10-15 I believe.

Currently roaming about the Burgh and I got to say this place seems very livable and pedestrian friendly! Coming from NYC, Pittsburgh appeared kind of small at first, but there's actually plenty of stuff to do.

Be sure to go to the top of the Cathedral of Learning for the amazing view. Crepes Parisiennes, which is a few blocks from campus, also has some absurdly good savoury and sweet crepes for <$8. Their tomato/cheese/garlic-infused olive oil crepe is like... a French pizza burrito (not really sure how to describe it, but it was divine).

Looking forward to my interview this week!

I love your write-ups, Hella! I just read about the one you wrote for Cornell--enormously informative! And I heard during my interview at Pitt that the city was voted most livable city last year and this year it was second place for that honor.

Totally my kind of city -- manageable, but cultured. Good luck with your interview! If you are half as good a conversationalist as you are a writer I think you would be guarenteed an acceptance. 😉

Awh, thank you! You flatter me too much. :shy: I think you're right; Pitt seems to be a good compromise between city and suburb. As a foodie, I love the quirky pop-up restaurants by the Cathedral. Super stoked for my upcoming interview.

These summaries have a kind of self-serving purpose, because I have to brain-dump all the info I get into a tangible, permanent form or else everything starts to muddle together with my other interviews. Also, when friends ask how my interview went, I just copy-paste the whole thing into an email and they are usually too overwhelmed by the block of text to ask any more questions. 😉

You're going to have a blast at Cornell! Pity our interview days didn't overlap.

One of my favorite restaurants! I'm partial to the Nutella and banana crepe myself. Sooooooo good!

Maybe the one and ONLY downside to having so many interviews! 😉 Hard to choose unless you get your facts down on paper. And I agree about the e-mails... too funny!!!

has anyone recently heard back from the MSTP at Pitt? things seem really quiet even though two interview dates have passed...just checking in!

Interviewed same day, +1 to everything in your write up. My student interview was good, checklist-ish due to the closed nature. Faculty interview was amazing, thoroughly enjoyed the conversation. As many others have said before, it's very low stress.

You probably know who I am, since half of the group was so quiet (not that there's anything wrong with that, I'm just a nervous talker). 😉

Seriously, this was a pretty low-key day. However, I realize that singular interview experiences are definitely not representative (interviewers are variable, duh). Today I just got grilled at a school with an oft-considered "relaxed" interview day. So it all come down to chance... but if anyone gets my faculty interviewer, they will not be disappointed. Such a genuinely warm-hearted person.

And I will vouch for the fact that the Pitt admissions reps were phenomenal. I actually had a very informative financial aid experience here, which is a first.

They really emphasize that their goal is to get you into your 1st choice residency. I wonder if this hugely career-focussed attitude will be common or an anomaly. I like it, though it may attract a more competitive student body (or a student body more geared towards competitive, academic residencies).

I giggled so hard reading some of the things the student hosts wrote on the excel sheets. Awesome people. I'd be honored to meet the cactus. Although I had to choose another one for personal reasons. Painful decision.

Did anyone's courses disappear from the secondary?
It happens if you check your secondary after you submitted it. Don't worry about it, me and at least one other person have had that happened and still got our interviews no problem.

Also currently available ii dates are 9/30, 10/22, 10/28, 10/29, and 10/32 if anyone is curious 🙂

Edit: Woops wrong thread!! That's what I get for trying to post using the app

I have a question for you guys -

I submitted my secondary on 8/11, and then my committee letter was uploaded on 8/19 - Pitt downloaded them right away on 8/19.

I then sent in an update on 8/20 with my grades for a summer course I took. I never got confirmation that it was added to my file, so I emailed them today to double check and was told "Your update was received and added to your file on 8/19/14"... but I sent it on 8/20 lol. Could they have mixed it up with my LOR..? Should I email again to clarify?

Ugh I don't want to annoy them but I also want to make sure they received it

Your committee letter is not an update and is not applied to your file in the same way. You can double check if you like, but it should be completely fine.

that's what I figured, I just thought it was odd that they told me a date earlier than would be possible (coincidentally, also the date that my LOR was uploaded)

Anyone knows what are the current available dates for interview? Is Oct or Nov still available? Thanks.

When I signed up for my interview a week or two ago, the earliest day was like nov 12. Had dates until January.

just had an interview here last week. like everyone before me said (and i didnt believe) --this interview was super relaxed and easy.
this school is awesome.

Hmm. Pitt only interviews through December so I wonder what that means for those who haven't interviewed or been invited?

Does pitt send out rejection letters/did anyone receive any?
