Hey all, long time lurker but i just got an II for october 24!! (IS)

I transmitted in early July and was getting nervous, but hope this works out.

Good luck all!
Stats? if you don't mind.

No worries, 3.9 GPA, 30 MCAT. I had 3 dates available, 2 in october and 1 in november.

Hey everyone, I sent in my app and secondaries on 8/1, and I got the confirmation email from UTH, but haven't heard anything else. When should I be worried about getting an interview or not?

I transmitted beginning of July and just finally got an II yesterday so I would not worry yet

Does anyone know the difference between a blind and open interview? Why both might be conducted in same day as well?

I was in July 15th and haven't heard anything yet. Still waiting for that II!

Blind means they conduct the interview without opening your file and seeing your application stats (unbiased interview)

Open means they take your stats and interests into consideration

So hard not to worry. I have one II and very nervous and anxious to get a second.

Can someone that has already interviewed at UT Houston give me some insights/information on the interview? Is it low stress? What do you like and dont like about UTH?

Same here. I'm interviewing tomorrow. Anyone else going to be there?

I also interviewed yesterday. Both of my interviewers were extremely nice and friendly. The students were great to talk to; one girl had an exam in a few hours but she still made some time to help the interviewees, which I thought was very kind of her. They give you a couple of tours around campus and in the hospitals, we were able to watch open heart surgery which was neat. They make sure to feed you well and actually served coffee throughout the day (other med schools please take notes...). I've interviewed at most of the Texas schools, and UTHouston's interview day was one of the best out of all of them imo.

I got a 35 and 3.89 and am TX and completed on 7JUL with 8 years Combat Medic experience. I wouldn't lose hope until you are for sure rejected.
Thanks for the reply. Did you get an II yet? I am still waiting....

Just had my interview here. Awesome experience! great group of very brilliant interviewees and definitely very approachable faculties and medical students. The TMC is also very impressing!

My time at UTH vastly exceeded my expectations. UTMB was excellent, and UTSW floored me, but UTH was extremely welcoming. My interviewers were jovial and very conversational. No stress at all. You get that feeling from everyone at the campus, from the faculty to the students. Everyone is happy to be there, and are really enthusiastic in convincing you to attend. The facilities, from what I got to see, are top notch. They really sell that they're located in the Texas Medical Center, and that you have the option to explore opportunities unique to such an incredible institution.

I don't think there's anything I really disliked about UTH. I'd be happy to go here. But if Southwestern accepts me, I just can't say no. DFW native, and everything I know and love is around here. I think Southwestern's intellectual clout (cough ranking cough) tilts it in their favor, but UTH was absolutely awesome. From most of the people I've met on the road, it seems like the day at UTH really made them reconsider their top choice. From their info session, you get that they're very proud of the diversity of their student body, as well as their relatively large class size.

TL;DR: Great school. Exceeded my expectations. Texas Medical Center is a big selling point. Would be happy to attend.

Hello! Current MS1 here (procrastinating studying). I was checking out the thread and just want to reiterate what the other students have said time and again - STAY CALM. There is still plenty of time left in the application cycle. I was a late interviewee myself! Feel free to message me about anything (curriculum, interview day questions, student life, etc.). I welcome the opportunity to talk about this school. I really love it.

How would you assess the curriculum now that you have been immersed in it for a couple of months now? I think the biggest drawback (if not not the only drawback) of UT-Health is the curriculum. Care to share your thoughts?

I'll jump in on that question as well. I'm a current MS2 at UTH. I'll be honest, the curriculum was not my favorite of the schools I was considering. Block week sounded terrifying, and I would have rather done organ based than UTH's design. It wasn't nearly as bad as I though it would be! You get used to block week very quickly, and all the classes we're in, especially second year, are covering the same concepts at the same time, so they all correspond very well. I'm way happier than I expected with the curriculum. I feel like I get what I need to know, and I think (most of the time), they present it in a way, and order, that makes sense.

When I originally came here, I came here thinking I was coming in spite of the curriculum. No one (read: residency directors) care about the first two years of medical school, so I figured I didn't really either. UTH does great on STEP1 and that was really all I cared about from MS1/MS2. I came here for the clinical experience, and I am definitely happy I did. Even as a second year, the school makes sure we get out and see real patients in the hospitals, and my preceptor has been awesome at picking patients with interesting presentations to help me learn (just examined a leprosy patient last week). I'm not sure I would have gotten such great experience this early on at other schools, and I'm so excited for the clinical years.

Sorry studying distracted me but here I am procrastinating again! I personally prefer the block style curriculum to the integrated systems curriculum (crazy I know). So for one, the free weekends when block week is several weeks out are so amazing. Typically, if you have more frequent and dispersed exams, its really hard to go places and not have that nagging fear in the back of your mind that you won't be able to make up the time you spent other places. I personally like having a life outside of school and I think that block style exams gives me more of an opportunity to have that.
Second, the block style of teaching really caters to my manner of thinking. Although our curriculum isn't technically integrated, it kind of is. That means that we do all of the biochemistry, developmental anatomy, gross anatomy, and histology of the heart (for example) at the same time. I prefer to categorize information, so when it comes to studying being able to section things off as such helps for me to stay on track and keep everything straight. And it also makes the correlations across the classes plenty clear even without systems based curriculum.
Third, I'll go ahead and say yeah block week for the first time is a little scary, but everyone makes it through unscathed and even though we haven't taken our second block exams yet (next week!), I already feel much calmer with my study schedule and methods etc. You really do adapt quickly.
And as the MS2 mentioned step scores are really good here! So obviously something is working!

Does anyone know if UTH accepts updates before an interview invite?

II Today!!! 4.0 GPA, 31 MCAT, transmitted late July.

Dates open in Oct and Nov are Oct 31, Nov 7, Nov 14. Didnt see any in December available for me.

Does anyone know if i would have a better chance at pre-matching if i took the earlier november date? That is the determining factor between picking the 7th or 14th. Thanks!

Pre-match goes out the 15th, so I'm thinking that the 14th doesn't have much of a chance. There's always exceptions though!

Congratz guys on the II! You will LOVE your interview day!

UTH offers very few pre-matches, so I wouldn't let that factor into your decision too much.

No wait list for IS until after match, and UTH does rolling admission for OOS, so any outcome is possible still!

For those who have interviewed and know Houston, what are my changes of making my flight that leaves the Houston airport at 530? I was not worried about it before but driving to my hotel took an hour and a half and I imagine it is even worse on a Friday at 3:30
