2014-2015 University of Wisconsin Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anyone else have to turn in more information about residency? Says my residency is confirmed but need to turn in more info by next August.

I didn't get a complete email yet though. Do they come at separate times?

I'm complete! I checked in with a friend and he is complete and got an interview already! Ahh hoping for some IS love here!

Yep... would have expected a little more than 9.5 days from invite to interview...

Cmon uwsmph ... i've lived here for more than 10 years; it can't be that hard to confirm residency!!!!!

Are they sending anything to OOS applicants anymore or is it just IS folks? Not that I'm expecting anything, probably the least OOS-friendly school I applied to. Would love an opportunity at UWSMPH though!

My understanding is that UWSMPH has two separate committees for IS and OOS applicants. So in theory they work separately in regards timing of interview decisions. Wisconsin interviewed 216 OOS applicants last year and I'm doubtful they have extended interviews to that many given so far interview dates on this forum have only been in September and October.

That's very interesting and good to know, thank you!

Haha, I remember a good number of IS applicants getting short notice last year too. At least you're not OOS! Gl at your interview - a lot of us M1s are getting involved with the pre-interview activities/interview day activities and signing up to host applicants as we speak 🙂. Looking forward to hosting/meeting some of you all!

UW interviews until late February, and you can bet some OOS applicants are interviewing then too. But, when I was speaking with admissions people last week, they were talking about how they want to improve their OOS yield for this year and will be trying to grab the strong applicants earlier in the cycle!

LizzyM 76, IS... Not given a choice of date - Making me go on the 19th
They're not like physically forcing you to go that day... If you have another interview or other important event that day you can ask for them to re-assign you to a later date, I know a few students who had to do that last year.

Additionally, you should take it as a compliment that they want you to interview so soon. During my cycle I was always a lot more excited to visit (and impressed by) schools that wanted to meet me right away, compared to those that couldn't accommodate me for several months. If your concern is more expensive plane tickets at such short notice, I do empathize with you though. I had to pay over $700 for one of my interview tickets last year. (Pro-Tip for those outside of WI reading this: it is often times cheaper to fly into Milwaukee or Chicago O'Hare and then just take a bus or drive a rental car to Madison, as the Dane. County airport tends to be pretty expensive to fly in and out of)

HOW LONG IS THIS GOING TO TAKE? (for residency verification)

I received this email today:

"Dear Applicant,

Your application has been reviewed by the Admissions Committee at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. At this time, we are still in the process of determining which applicants we will invite for our remaining interview slots. A decision on whether we will have space to interview you may not be made until January.

We appreciate your patience. We are not able to accept any updates to your application during this time. We will contact you as soon as the Committee has reached a final decision."

Is this the UW version of a hold? Definitely saddened a bit by this considering I live three miles away from the medical school 🙁

Yeah, this is the email they send for pre-interview holds. However, you can also think of it as an update so that you aren't kept in the dark, about whether or not they are still interested (and in this case, they are, but they just aren't sure about interviewing you this early in the cycle).

This isn't necessarily a bad sign, especially if you are in state. You could receive an update/offer to interview in as little as a month, or at any time between now and January. Now, it's just a test of patience 🙂.

It was fine, really just meant I had to step up my interview prep.... I just found it a little strange that they said your interview is on September 19th as opposed to getting a list of date

Oh yeah, it is a bit unique, but MCW and other schools that do fewer interview days of larger groups as opposed to many days of small groups work the same way. Make sure to check out the "Interivew Feedback" part of this website its a big help in interview prep 🙂

Rejected via email this morning. Complete around mid-August. OOS, so not terribly surprised. I grew up in Michigan and wanted to go to med-school in the midwest. Alas! 3.5x/35.

Just got an email requesting more information before they can determine residency, including official letterhead from my job. I've lived here for 4 years...

Saw this tweet yesterday from UWisc med admissions: "Residency checks are being done in the order they have been received. 1 office handles all checks for the campus. #Patience"

II this past Thursday.

OOS. 32/3.5c/3.6s (3.8+ when you take away comm. coll. prior to military service). Nontrad, Military Vet, well traveled, Master's Degree, tons of extracurriculars - research, nonprofit founder, clinical and nonclinical volunteering in US and abroad. Complete mid-July.

If you do get assigned a day you can't make, they are usually pretty willing to let you do a day that will work.

I am OOS and got an II about two weeks ago. I know school is not OOS friendly, but I am hoping for a shot here, this program seems awesome! Good luck to anyone applying OOS.

If you got an II as an OOS, the odds are now pretty much in your favor if you rock your interview 🙂. Good luck!

FINALLY residency verified. Complete the first day (IS).

Also rejected today. Was expecting this one. OOS w/ some ties. LizzyM ~73 and average ECs. Complete 7/22

Thrilled about an II just now! Lizzy M ~ 73, complete 7-23. OOS but some ties to Wisconsin! So excited!

Yep, I have an interview on October 10th, OOS.

It may be a while. The office had difficulty with my residency and I had to send in a number of additional forms. If you have questions, maybe call the office, they're really friendly.
