2014-2015 University of Wisconsin Application Thread

Just got a rejection letter in the mail. Interviewed 11/18. Absolutely blindsided and devastated. In-state.

Has anyone pre-interview sent an LOI? I know they say no updates, but I want to let them know I'm still a fan since I'm OOS.

Happened to me last year. It is a truly terrible feeling. It sucks, but, if you don't have acceptances elsewhere, now is the time to ratchet up your application and prepare for another cycle. I would suggest contacting Ms. Duffy to find out why you were rejected. She gave me extremely valuable feedback that allowed me to improve my app and gain acceptances elsewhere during this current cycle.

Do any current students have an idea of when they stop sending out interview invites?

I don't know about how far out they've given interview dates, but UW finishes interviewing at the end of February, so they'll probably finish sending invites soon (if they haven't already), or shortly after the new year

Fellow acceptees - anyone set on this school for matriculation?

Has anyone else from 11/14 interview date heard back? I'm not sure if we will hear before the Holiday break...

I received an interview offer at the end of January last year.

Thanks for your reply! I am OOS with very strong ties - complete since July. Still no news! But I am losing hope :-/

Posting to let people know that II are still going out. I just got one today for 1/23. IS, UW alum. There's hope yet.

Was kind of disappointed by my interview at UW. I thought I would fall in love with the school, but that just didn't happen. I'll give it another chance at second look.

I'm kind of curious - What didn't you like about it? or was it just a gut feeling thing? I personally thought the school was great, but I also thought they went a little overboard with selling the school.

I think I was there on a pretty busy day so we were unable to see the most of the school during our tours. That and the hard-sell was a bit much. I felt like they spent more time raving about the City of Madison than the school itself. As someone who has spent plenty of time in Madison it was almost nauseating.

Congrats. Hopefully they are still sending out II's for us non-alum, OOS, generic applicants.😢

Also, does UWSMPH have specific days they call out? (I noticed that Lilmiffy was accepted on a Monday but badgers831 was accepted on a Wednesday?

, Ah, classic Dean Hansen. Every so often, there's those rare few who have acceptances to other "higher ranked" schools who choose UW over their more prestigious school. Even though our school has a great reputation and is well-respected within the medical community, it doesn't quite have the same amount of clout as "bigger brand-name schools," so they make up for it by raving about how great the school is + the opportunities available to you 😛

We have some great characters down in the admissions office - definitely living up to the "midwest hospitality!"

Sorry to hear your interview days weren't as great as some other peoples' experiences - maybe it was because I wasn't there 😉. In seriousness, it can sometimes vary, especially when people interview the week before we have exams as opposed to the week afterwards. There are people in my class who said they hated their interview but was sold after second look. I absolutely loved my interview day - as always, YMMV.

If you have any major concerns or questions, definitely feel free to let me or some of the other M1s know, so we can help to improve the interview/app cycle for next year when some of us get involved with admissions!

I agree. It is my second time applying to the UW Madison because my first time I was impressed with the program and the small size of the city. It was this "midwest hospitality" that got me hooked. Looking forward to hearing from the school soon.

Interviewed on 12/5, has anyone from that date heard back? Kind of nervous we won't find out til after Christmas.

Still waiting for my 11/21 response (DID EVERYONE ON THE 11/18 GET A RESPONSE? I know Ruby and LilMiffy did)

Anyone know if scholarships are offered for the entire 4 years or just the first year and then the school will reconsider your eligibility?

My second question is: the class of 2019 will see some slight changes in phase 3 which is the 4th year. Does that mean that we'll have mostly electives and time off in the 4th year?

Third question (lol, so long): Are there any affordable dorms for med students close to school? If so, how much do you guys pay and how big is the room/studio/apt?

Thanks a lot.

1. I believe all scholarships offered (at least prior to matriculation, during the recruiting process) are for all 4 years... Ive never heard of any just for a year or two.

2. 4th year here already is mostly elective time (and a couple vacation months) as it is, but the difference you guys will be experiencing is that the couple months that are required will be more flexible in terms of being able to orient the required clerkship/experience to your future specialty. E.g. currently the 4th year Sub-I required by most schools has to be in a medicine field at UWSMPH, but they are working on changing that so that you guys (and the current 1st and 2nd years) can do it in a surgical or other specialty or sub-specialty

3. UWSMPH doesnt have dorms, although UW-Madison does have graduate student housing that med students may apply for (Im pretty sure they prioritize students with families, though I could be wrong). However, there are tons of huge apartment buildings and houses full of flats very near the hospital/med school that are easy to parooze prices and layouts online. Many accepted students then set up showings around second look so they can choose one to sign a lease on, and since there are so many options the prices vary quite widely, mostly dependent on location, number of housemates you would have, and the age/luxuriousness of the apt. It is definitely more expensive to live alone (both 1 bed and studio) in the area around the med school, but the loan budget is very generous so many students do it, though the majority definitely have roommates!

It looks like people were getting calls on the Monday before Christmas last year (12/23/13) , so hopefully something today? I don't think I can handle another week or so of not knowing

EDIT: Just got an MSTP offer! Best. Christmas gift. Ever! Congratulations to everyone else as well

Anyone know when they send out merit scholarship offers? With acceptances or later in the spring? Thanks!

Okay so I'm way more than excited. Received a phonecall with an unbelievable scholarship offer on Friday. Christmas sure came early!

So yes I believe they have started sending out scholarship offers.

I got a very similar call on Friday! It blew my mind, I was not expecting it at all. Madison was already my top choice, but WOW.

Congrats! I also received that awesome call. They definitely have things rolling.
