2014-2015 Virginia Commonwealth University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I've been complete since 7/9 and haven't heard a word since, at this point who knows
I submitted around 7/9 too and I had a status update about a month ago (I think it was #4 that said something along the lines of the committee wishes to review my file further) before I was granted an interview 2 days ago. It seems very variable so I would hang tight!

For people who've attended the interview:
Anyone received the post-interview "decision has been made" status? We were told that we'd get one ~10 days after. If so, could you share when you interview & when did you received the email?

+1 wondering too

Have you received the post-interview status change?

My portal just has something about the Interview survey (which I think I completed right afterward). So, no?

I am a current student. When I interviewed I never got an update like that even though they told me it would be a new status update in like a week or so. Instead about 3 weeks after my interview my status changed to accepted 🙂
However, I heard they will send out rejections as status updates post interview more quickly. In other words, no news is good news!

According to the person who interviewed me:

The admissions committee meets each Monday to review the previous weeks interviewees. The interviewer and the original file reviewer present their interviewees. Each committee member grades the presented file. The average grade is taken and the file is ranked on a list. On the days when VCU grants acceptances (10/16, 12/15, 2/15, 3/15), a certain number of the top files are issued acceptances. The only time when you hear from them post-interview other than on one of those days is if you were rejected. That will happen within 10 days of your interview. If you hear from them after 10 days, it's because you're accepted. If you hear nothing, it doesn't mean you're rejected.

Just got a status change to "the committee has met to discuss your file and your application is being placed on hold until a later date." Based on this post from a current student, I think that means I've likely been sent to the reject pile 🙁

FWIW I got the post interview hold. Interviewed in early September and had the interview survey within 5 days of the interview.
I would guess it's just a matter of the adcom being really busy now and whether your interviewer could make the adcom review directly after your interview.

Don't lose hope. I am a reapplicant, got WL last year. I got an almost immediate status change last year, where as this year I waited a few weeks. It's early and if you were rejected outright, I think you would have heard quickly. Don't read too much into the timing.

I interviewed yesterday. To add to Mr Roboto's post, at the info session they said that 50-70 acceptances would be given out on October 16th.

Nice profile pic; I first learned about graft vs host from Dr. Fünke.

9/26: "The committee's file review indicates that they wish to consider your file over the next several weeks before making a decision about interview. Since they have some reservations about granting an interview, your file will be reviewed again by a small sub-committee before making a final decision. Please continue to check this site in order to learn when further action has been taken."

To add to my other post, the "If you hear from us within ten days it's a rejection" is not true. They send out a status change email a few days later, when you log in they ask you to fill out a survey. Getting that email made me feel like crap, thought I'd been rejected post-interview already haha.

Not even a secondary application here yet...should I just forget it with VCU?

So when they say you have 60 days to complete your file, does it mean you have 60 days to submit all your supplemental app materials (letters, fee, application) ??
I submitted my stuff on the 60th day (Deadline for completing file). Am I considered late?

Went under review for like a day, then back to complete a while ago. Nothing has happened since.

By far, this school has one of the dumbest and most frustrating evaluation processes/ways of communicating with applicants I've ever seen. For starters, sending people cryptic statuses about "reservations" and then not communicating about what they reservations are is incredibly dumb and locking people into interview slots eons away even at the start of the season is just painfully annoying (how about just sending them invites later in the season like every other school instead of inviting people in august and being like "you can't schedule until january cuz your score is bad"). This school should re-evaluate everything about the way they work with applicants.

I, for one, would rather have any info I can get early including an interview invite for months later and very much appreciate any info schools like VCU are willing to go out of their way to share with applicants.

They're reviewing your app to see if you'll be granted a secondary. You'll get an email in a few weeks telling you if your status has changed. The login info is a preliminary "make sure you know how to get into the portal" type thing. Good luck!

Regarding the announcement about failed letter transfers in September, does anyone who submitted during the first 3 weeks of September have their letters marked as received?

Also how long does VCU usually take to upload letters?

Awesome, thanks for the info!

Hi all,
A lot of people have stated being complete several weeks ago, but 'no status change', what are your statuses?
On my home page it says 'your file is complete' and 'the committee will now do a full comprehensive review...", akin to on my 'File Status' page where it indicates my file was complete at a date in late August. However the last status change notification I received was when I received a secondary.
Did most people receive a status change when they were 'Complete'? Has anyone had this status for a long period of time or seen any changes? I'm trying to understand where I stand as far as eligibility.
Hope I get to see some of you at an interview in the near future!

First of his name. OOS. 3.52, 32. Complete 7/28. No hold, no raven.

We all know what my brother would do. Robert would gallop up to the gates of VCU alone, break them with his warhammer, and ride through the rubble to the admissions office and demand an update. But I am not Robert. I will wait.

R'hllor, the fiery lord of admissions, demands you sacrifice someone with royal blood before his office will grant you an interview.

II: 10/1; I: 11/17-18

That was a super fast turnaround. They must really like you 🙂

I was hoping the same thing. Not gonna lie, "Since they have some reservations about granting an interview, your file will be reviewed again by a small sub-committee before making a final decision" really did not give me the impression I'd be expecting an II today. Hope for everyone!

I submitted my secondary and letters on 9/6 and my letters were finally marked as received on 9/24. Prior to the announcement being posted, I had contacted admissions about the delay and they told me it takes about 2-3 weeks for letters to be processed, especially due to the increase in volume of applications.

Finally got a status change after sitting at "your file is now complete and in the review process" for 8-10 weeks.

Now it's: "Your file is complete, and has been forwarded to the Adcom for further decision"

Lolz I got a bad feeling about this one
I'm still waiting to receive a status update...still in the M.D. file is complete stage after 10 weeks now.

Finally got a status update. Submitted the secondary on 7/15

Got the #3 status:
"The committee's file review indicates that they would like to consider your file further. We are now in the process of scheduling interviews and will continue to do so through February. Unfortunately, the committee indicates interest in far more candidates than we are able to interview. Since we are dependent on the Committee member's schedules for interview spaces, we are unable to predict when or if we will be able to schedule you this year. Please continue to check this site to learn when further action has been taken."

Had you been given an email II?

So I've been paging through this (enormous) forum...and I haven't found anyone with the status update I just received: "The committee's file review indicates that they are interested in your candidacy. However, due to the increase in the applicant pool this year, it is clear we MAY be unable to interview all the candidates at your priority score. If we do find that we are unable to grant an interview, you will be notified by e-mail in March". I'm assuming this status is a step below (lower priority) then the "The committee's file review indicates that they would like to consider your file further" status? Hahaha ugh wat.

EDIT: Ok-I paged back further, and found discussion of the MAY status...so it looks like this status is a higher priority then the "The committee's file review indicates that they would like to consider your file further" status....correct? What a complicated system :/

See they say that, but some people with the MAY status haven't gotten interview while those with further statuses have. And vice versa. It really is a confusing system. The black box of admissions is a crazy place.

got this

I'm just speculating, but I received the same message after I had been sent an II just the other night. I'm an MSTP applicant, so I think they prioritize a bit differently, but I would guess the next round of IIs will be going out shortly, since they've scheduled MSTP interviews just recently.

Is this disclaimer on everyone's status page?
Code:
Please note that your file may be put on hold for several reasons:

Hold for MCAT means that we are assuming you are scheduled to take the test. The Committee wishes to wait to evaluate your file until those scores are available. MCATS taken after September of the year of application will not be considered.
Hold for Grades: The file review done by the Committee. has determined that you are engaged in coursework which may affect their decision about whether to invite you for an interview. It is imperative that you submit grades for current or proposed courses in a timely fashion. Any file on hold for grades that is not submitted by January 31st will automatically be rejected.
Thank you for managing your file effectively.

Wait what? You received the message I did after an II? That's confusing
