2014-2015 Wake Forest University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
By complete do you mean after submitting secondary? I sent my secondary two weeks ago and still no complete email. Does anyone know if there is a status check website?

When did you submit your secondary?

Did you get an email saying your application is complete?
Nope... Don't worry. I think they are just slow in updating the status. I didn't get the primary complete email until July 14th but they sent the secondary invitation quite soon after that. So I guess they'll send II soon after complete email?

Still haven't gotten a "received" email. OOS think I have an ok shot but still a little nervous. 30 MCAT (09PS/10VR/11BS) and 3.66 cGPA and great ECs.

BTW I know they are called the "Baptist" medical center. Are they not gonna like it if I talked about working in the surgical recovery room at Planned Parenthood in AMCAS? 😵

Also, sorry for trolling but @Bbroush, epic comment about submitting while holding your newborn 🙂

I believe I looked into this a couple months ago because I wasn't interested in applying there unless religion was not a factor in what treatments are available. I found nothing that made me suspicious that they provide anything but the full array of options for reproductive care (birth control, etc). Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Incidentally, my grandma passed away there last month while on vacation, and from what I hear from my grandpa and dad, the hospital is absolutely incredibly equipped and has extremely compassionate staff. It wasn't a factor in my applying, but it's a plus to hear.

@AspiringERMD , thank you very much for the advice! Sorry to hear about your grandma 🙁

Also, I read on MSAR that Wake screens so hard on AMCAS that they send interview invites to everyone who is selected for a secondary (and completes the secondary)?!?!?!

Is this true? If so:

a.) I really like the way this school thinks
b.) Congrats to everyone who has received a secondary thus far!

It is Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, sorry to hear about your grandma. The hospital campus there is very large and well-equipped and Winston Salem itself is a charming city. I would not worry about the religious factor, you'll find many organizations do have a religious affiliation by name.

Ok I definitely think I misread MSAR. It says "applicants with completed secondaries are CONSIDERED for interview". That makes more sense... sorry to get anybody's hopes up hahah

Unfortunately it is not true. A closer look at the wording of the MSAR confirms this.

"Secondary applications are selectively sent and all other applicants are notified of their status. Applicants with completed secondaries are **considered** for interviews at the medical school. The School of Medicine is not able to accept transfer students at this time"

Note the starred key word.

Thanks! I can't vouch for how great of a secondary it was but hey I submitted, right? Actually my wife is my editor and she has done a great job.

no secondary :/ thinking this is a no from this school... or are they waiting for my LOR?

What percentage of completed secondaries receives an interview?

Just received secondary, as well. AMCAS verified on 07/03/14 and secondary received from WFSM on 07/30/14!

To clarify what was being talked about earlier, WFBH has Baptist in the name due to a historic association. The religious affiliation does not play a role in admissions, medical education, or patient care in today's day and age. Applicants will not be discriminated against on the basis of their religious or spiritual beliefs, and everyone is encouraged to apply. The only exception I can think of is if you're some kind of satanist that sacrifices lambs every weekend or something. If that's the case, probably best to not share that info, haha. The class of 2017 has people from many different religious and spiritual backgrounds, and I'm sure other classes are no different.

I did find this on their website, but it doesn't include information about completed secondaries.

Nine percent of all applicants are asked to visit Wake Forest School of Medicine for interviews that run from September through March.

Condolences to you and your family. Hopefully she will be looking down upon you and guide you on your path towards medicine.

Got secondary this morning and just submitted it. I realized after I submitted it that we were only supposed to do 2 of the essays. I was hoping that wouldn't look bad lol (I like to do things without reading the instructions). 😱😱😱😱😱😱

It says "at least 2"... Personally, i think it looks best to do all of them!

Got the complete e-mail today. Sent in my secondary 7/21.

+1

So that whole "Your application will be reviewed throughout the year and if granted an interview, we will send you an invitation by email", isn't a hold status right?

Does anyone know when they start sending II?

August 6 was the first II on SDN last cycle. Do they still screen heavily for secondaries here? I got the secondary but I'm OOS 26 MCAT

I mentioned this earlier in the thread but it's worth mentioning again: Last year it looked like there was no screen at all. Only one person came forward and said they didn't receive a secondary, and (if memory serves) nobody posted rejections until very late in the year.

Thanks 🙂 I'm nonreligious but she has always been my role model. A Master's degree in math, or any STEM field, was a rarity for women when she was in her 20s! 😀

When did you submit your secondary?
Sorry, I misspoke- I meant to say that I received an email indicating that they'd received my primary app. I won't receive the secondary until my MCAT is released Aug 12.

Though the satanists are doing some interesting things in medicine this week. http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/satanists-hobby-lobby-decision-play-devils-advocate/story?id=24772548

+1 to ABC for the pun.

This isn't the first challenge they've issued to possible unequal applications of religious protection in the past year. They wanted a statue outside a courthouse after a Christian one went up in Oklahoma. (That was, I believe, followed up by a Hindu religious leader also wanting a statue.) I'll never join their religion, but they are becoming a favorite activist group of mine.

Hey Leslie, I found this in last years thread:

Thanks. I looked and found:

7400 primary apps
2450 secondaries
540 interviews

225 acceptances
120 matriculated

Can't confirm if it is true, but it is something.

So I know this has been brought up, but are we in consensus that answering all three essay questions is okay?

@tarheel1408 Bahaha sacrificing lambs. But you know there's somebody out there who's debating whether or not his strange hobby would contribute to the school's diversity...

Another rando question for you guys since you have been so awesome at answering qs so far. Why do they ask for ties to NC on the secondary? I thought they were a private institution... do they give preference to NC applicants? Also, if I grew up in SC does that mean I have ties to NC? 😉 Jk I'm sure that wouldn't count but my dad did work in NC for quite some time when I was younger so perhaps that could count.

Hey everyone; I was accepted here last year but decided to matriculate elsewhere. WFSM is a great school; here are some stuff I remember from my experience last year:

Interview groups are really small (I think mine was only 6 people)
About half of interviewees end up getting accepted
you have 3 interviews (all with faculty) and each are about 30 minutes long.
I think admissions told us around 500 were interviewed and 220 were accepted the year before for a class size of around 120. There were over 8000 applicants total.
The fact that you have been offered an II means that you have a great shot at acceptance because I think WF looks very selectively at who they offer an II to.
Winston-Salem is pretty quiet but also dilapidated in various areas.
My impression was that the school did not really focus on research that much (one of the reasons I ultimately withdrew).

Good luck to all and hope this helps!

Bulbasaur has some great points about Wake here, but I need to correct any notion that Wake isn't a research-oriented institution. Research isn't a mandatory part of the curriculum, but research opportunities abound for students. There are so many research labs and mentors here, that they actually seek out students to help out. I would say that you can find a research project here in any subject field you could want. I'm currently involved in Wake's MSRP, a summer research program for students. It is incredibly easy to get involved with, and I'm getting paid to do research over the summer. If you are interested in doing research, Wake is a wonderful place to do it.

Awesome username. My first starter!

But the interviews were about 15 minutes long, not 30.

Sorry, I didn't mean to say that WF doesn't have research programs. Every medical school nowadays basically has research opportunities, especially the summer ones between MS1 and MS2. I'm sure there's plentiful of opportunities for students to get involved here. It's just that in my personal opinion, I didn't view WF in the same light as some of my other options in terms of research. And although I don't really care for the US News rankings, I put weight into the NIH rankings (where they rank solely based on how much NIH grant $ was given to each medical school) in terms of evaluating research. http://www.brimr.org/NIH_Awards/2013/NIH_Awards_2013.htm (table 2-3).

Yea, perhaps my memory is wrong. I think they were at least 20 minutes tho..

Also, I'd like to add that cost of living in Winston Salem is really cheap. I think the students said $400-500/month rent and food and stuff are really cheap too. Also, the students get a free lenovo thinkpad so a free computer is always nice.

does Wake screen? I submitted my primary early in June but just added Wake on July 28. I haven't gotten its secondary yet....I'm wondering if it came and I accidentally deleted it?? My trash is empty....or do they take a while to send stuff?

From what I hear they do a big screen before secondaries :/

Soooo from what I've read doing all 3 of the non-optional questions boosts chances of an interview...is this true?

So my three week deadline for the secondary was today. I submitted it last wednesday and I get a summary page when I log on but I haven't received my complete e-mail. I know from other posts this takes time so It's probably just backlogged with other secondaries. Should I call to make sure it's received so I don't miss the deadline? Or trust that because I submitted it last wednesday I'm good. Thoughts?

My app was verified on the 24th and I still haven't received a secondary. It's been a week and half and it's the only one I don't have. Has anyone else not received a secondary?
