2014-2015 West Virginia University Application Thread

Does anyone know how to send them an update letter? Through the email provided for the secondary app?

Had a horrible experience. School was ok and everything but the INTERVIEWERS were bad. One guy zoned out the ENTIRE time and kept checking the clock even when I was looking straight at him and talking to him. And I could tell they barely read my app because their questions were horrible and would have been answered if they read my personal statement (you know, the 2nd most important part of my app). Pitiful.
I'm sorry you had a bad experience. Good luck at other schools!

Got the wait list letter in the mail yesterday :/. Interviewed 11/7. Not too disappointed because it seems like nearly all OOS students are wait listed. Here's to hoping we see some movement soon!

Pretty bland email saying to expect a letter. I feel like it would have had a smiley face in it at least if it were good news...or even a waitlist...

I think everyone on here has agreed that waitlist/deny is an E-mail like you received and an acceptance gets an E-mail stating such.
It doesn't make much sense to me to notify one group and leave the others in limbo for 3-5 days (7 so far in my case) but oh well.

Interviewed 11/20. I wonder what the chances are of hearing back from the admissions committee this week, seeing as how it is the week of Thanksgiving.

The professors and staff are really good at getting things done near holidays and weekends. It should still be about 7-14 days between interview and when you hear something. (We had grades posted by a professor near midnight last night!)

They're off tomorrow and Friday and maybe today. They'll be back at it Monday though so there shouldn't be too much of a delay.

Does anyone know how many people get put on the waitlist In total? I know a couple who didn't receive waitlist last year...so it's obviously not everyone.

I was told at my interview that they are interviewing ~1000 applicants this year for a class of ~100. I'm not entirely sure how many they accept, like other schools that accept 2-3.5 applicants per available seat. But, from what I hear, rejections post-interview are rather rare. I can only assume the waitlist is rather larger.

I as just on a thread for WVU from '07 and someone said only 30 left on waitlist by April...knew it sounded too good to be true! That was probably before they started interviewing everybody and their mother!

From what I've heard from my class about half, maybe a bit more are not put in the waitlist first. The large majority of these outright acceptees are IS. I believe they put almost everyone they interview and don't outright accept on the waitlist. However, just judging from my class there is a fair amount of movement so that doesn't mean there isn't hope!

I'm a year behind Mountaineer12, and my class is about the same. I agree that there is a fair amount of movement and as I posted before, I have a number of classmates who weren't accepted until after May or June. I know the wait is hard. One of my classmates had a job lined up before she heard she was accepted off the wait list, and she's brilliant. My class, unlike last years, only has one drop so far and that was for personal reasons. There are a lot of top quality potential medical students trying to get acceptances. The competition is stiff. But don't think that doesn't mean you won't make it.

Most people who apply to medical school are slightly neurotic (and those on SDN definitely are 😛) so I know you can't help but be anxious until you get an acceptance, but try to keep yourself occupied and have lots of fun this year so you're ready for what's coming next. All we get is what we call "Fun Every 3 Weeks", because every 3rd Friday we have a major exam, so we all take that night off. Half of us are too tired to do anything but sleep.

That's awesome you guys have only had one drop! I hope it stays that way. We lost 15 or so over the whole year and probably 8-10 in human function alone. (To be fair, like 2 people dropped out during orientation so that doesn't really count against the school haha). We haven't lost anyone in second year yet so that's an improvement.

Can either you or @Darth Doc comment more on the disparity between people dropping between years? Is it due to some curricular change or just different student body makeup or something else entirely?

As far as I know, it's been fairly steady between my class and the two before it. Each has lost about 15 people or so. Quite a few repeat and do fine and many leave just because they figured out they don't want to do medicine.

In my opinion drop outs are due to three things:
1) there's no easing into med school at WVU. You start difficult biochem and phys right away and some people aren't prepared
2) 75 is the lowest pass, which is a bit high, in my opinion and can be challenging to achieve in some classes
3) student services is really great about helping people drop or repeat if they want. There's no sense of being stuck in med school. They want us to be happy so they will help in anyway possible even if that means dropping. That way no one is there who doesn't want to be

From what I understand there was a large jump in applicants between class of 2017 and 2018 just as there is from 2018 and next year's class of 2019. My thought is that they had an even stronger applicant pool than in previous years. It could also just be luck of the draw. All of this is just my opinion. Statistically my year could be an aberration. Keep in mind too, that we are only halfway through the first year. There may be fewer of us after final grades come out in December and there's no further opportunities to improve grades.

Teachers are consistently telling us that our class is performing better on tests than previous years. They work hard to keep test information consistent, so I think this is a valid comparison. The difference is just a few points. We have a number of genius curve breakers in the class 🙂. I'm stuck in the middle somewhere.

We get score distributions after our major tests in the combined biochemistry/physiology curriculum that we call human function. In my class there are one or two extremely low scores. Those people may drop in the future, however, our school is clear that there are options to repeat a year or just take a single class over the summer to repeat the single class if you are struggling. There are more than 5 people repeating first year in my class.

Is there anything we can do while we're on the waitlist to increase our chances of acceptance? Such as, sending updates/transcripts or letters?

I believe people have mentioned before that you can send in updates if you have something significant, for example a new publication or significant experience. If you are on the wait list in January/February, I've heard sending in a letter of intent can be helpful.

Hi all! To everyone who still has to interview: good luck! As everyone has already said, it's very laid back. I attended WVU for undergrad and am currently a graduate student here and I would be happy to answer any questions you have about Morgantown if you would like to PM me.
I also just wanted to mention to anyone who has been accepted (or will be!) that a friend and I have started a Facebook group for the Class of 2019 and we're excited to meet our future classmates. If you PM me, I will be glad to send the link.
Best of luck with this cycle, everyone!

Congratulations! May I ask...were either of you waitlisted first?

Congratulations though!! Acceptances feel so good!!
Thanks! I was not waitlisted first. I interviewed 11/20. I'm OOS but I have strong in state ties.

Any know why this school interviews so many OOS people to just waitlist almost all of them? I really don't get it. What are they looking for?

Accepted today! This was my first interview and my first acceptance 🙂
OOS, no ties, didn't get waitlisted either.
I saw someone else say they had a bad interview experience, but mine was wonderful and if this is the only acceptance I get I'd still be extremely happy!

Good luck to everyone else, especially those on the waitlist! :luck::xf:

I asked them about this and they said that in recent years they've noticed a drop in the number of in-state students applying (much smaller population of younger ppl who want to go into medicine) so as a back up plan they interview a ton of OOS students.

Any chance you also interviewed on 11/20, like myself and livelovelaugh123?

I interviewed the day before you guys lol so close though! haha how did you guys deal with getting there and the parking situation??
I live about an hour away so I drove down the morning of my interview. Initially I pulled in the parking lot for health sciences students, but the "parking police" were quick to correct me and point me to the parking garage. Overall it wasn't terrible; I got out of there before the crowd filled in for the K-State and WVU game.

Ok that's good! We were worried about how you guys were gonna fair with the tailgating and all, but it sounds like it all worked out well.

so there are TWO interviews right? each is 30 minutes?

oh wow. ive never had one like that before. that's kind of intimidating.
Just treat it like a normal 1-on-1. Maintain eye contact with the person speaking to you. When you are speaking, it's okay to shift eye contact to the other person for a moment. I had mine with the actual Dean of admissions, and I felt fine.

you got some killer stats

Lol thanks. They haven't been helping me much (still not accepted anywhere yet), so I am living proof that it takes more than numbers to get accepted.

No acceptances yet?? I would've thought you'd have at least one! Wow, I'm sure you'll get something soon though, sometimes it just takes them awhile to recognize your greatness (I know) haha 😉

Once you do it you'll see how laid-back and nice they are. Not one person came out saying they had a bad experience from the day I interviewed. They're really just getting to know you better as a person 🙂
