FYI, all of my confirmation emails regarding interviews have been sent at 8:01am CST, seems like that's the time that they send out all the updates! Be on the lookout around then

For the research essay, is it ok to copy and paste from my own dissertation with minor edits?
I am the only writer of my dissertation.

I don't see why not! It's your stuff. (Just be sure you still phrase it in a way that isn't overly academic and still fits the prompt.)

Yup, I totally copied from my thesis. Just had to cut out overly detailed stuff and condense!

I noticed that they highly recommend finishing your secondary within 2 weeks. I've been really busy with work/traveling and I am just getting around to it (~3 weeks). Does this seem to be something that plays a large impact on II decisions?

Probably not, just submit it ASAP.

So I have done research, but as a Lab Tech/Helper, I had a more outside-person view of the research that was done in my second lab.
Although I was on an abstract for one of my clinical research, I was more interested in the translational cancer lab I was in, although I had less of a direct impact on the research that was done.
Do yall think it's safe to talk about what I saw at oncology lab, even though I wasn't specifically put on a project?
So, for neither of my research experiences, I can't really talk about my own pursuit and methods, because I just helped facilitate research - I wasn't really involved with devising it.

I think you should talk about it. It is still research "exposure" that probably influenced you or shaped you in some way. And I think that is what Case Western is looking for with that question--how research has had an effect on you, if at all. Just be honest about your contributions. Could anyone you worked with provide a LOR on your behalf?

Haha actually 6, but a rejection from Pritzker, so net 5! But actually, I just feel really blessed to have these opportunities. I'm definitely not the best applicant by any means haha.
I'm confused by this...even if you get rejected somewhere, if you were invited to 6 interviews, that's just...6. No net anything. Either way, :highfive:

And this is why I'm going into medicine, not mathematics haha.

So wait... when i describe the research portion for this secondary, should I choose one to talk about or talk about all the research i've done thus far?
I definitely formed hypothesis and analyzed research for my public policy BA, but my other scientific research was more lab tech work, in which i did not really involve myself in beyond helping facilitate the work...

When I called their admissions team, they told me to focus on the most longitudinal or fruitful project. Hope that helps!!

My status has been "SUBMITTED including PAYMENT" for about a week now. Does that mean they need to verify my LOR (which other schools have already gotten so I know they've been sent) to change the status to "Complete" or something? Or is my status the complete status? I know I'm overly paranoid about such things, but 'tis the season.

If you look a little farther down the page that says "submitted including payment," there is a line that says "Marked Complete: ____." This will change to YES once everything has been processed. Took 5 business days for mine to get processed. I was personally QUITE anxious, but rest assured it will get done eventually.

Mine says YES next to marked complete, but it still says "date not available." Is this common?

Ah thank you! Mine does say "Yes on 7/27/15."

"If you were working on a small group project and you thought that another student wasn't carrying his/her load, how would you handle it?"

Do any current Case Western students or applicants mind sharing what they wrote for this? Is this a straight forward answer or should it be backed up with a personal story? What are they looking for when they ask questions like these? Any help would be appreciated, please and thank you.

Just answer it straightforwardly. This is a hypothetical question and does not have to be backed up by a personal story.

How much did you guys write for the 3500 character essays? I feel like I can't exceed 2000.

haha, write until you make your point. as long as it's not like 500 characters, I think it's fine

3,200. I really like that they gave so much space for the personal challenge essay. I don't think you need to fill up all 3,500 chars but that character limit lends itself to constructing a real fleshed out story about yourself, complete with opinions and reflections, not simply the specifics of the challenge. Some schools I applied to only allowed 1,000 chars for this and the end result felt more choppy.

Anyways, I think 3,500 chars is provided so that you can tell your story as best you can without worrying about loosing pertinent content. If that is done in 2,000 characters, I don't think that's a problem!

I'm sure you have already thought of this, but if you haven't yet, perhaps tie what you have gained from this experience to medicine, caring for others and service in the general sense, and compassion towards others.

@Xenith , @cxra makes some great points. I am a big proponent of not straining yourself too much to hit a character limit. However, 2000 characters is less than 60% of your total allotted characters. Therefore, you may be able to add more opinions/reflections, per cxra's recommendations, that will paint more of the picture that CWRU is looking for.

However, this is keeping in mind that I haven't seen your essay. So, if you think you are telling a complete and effective story in 2000 characters, go for it and submit.

I had like 2900 for my personal challenge essay. I told my story well and thought anything else would be redundant
My research essay was right up to the limit though. I did a metric buttload of research so my essay was nearing 5000 characters before I cut it down

Just my 2 cents:
It's pretty clear through the tone they're setting that they want you to share your story, regardless of how many characters it takes. It even says that it won't truncate if you go over (unlike most other schools). So like everyone else has said, use as many characters as you need to tell your story. My first essay was 3000 characters, and my second one was 4700... Remains to be seen if going over the soft recommendation was a good decision (I do have an II), but I actually felt like I could express myself, which is a rarity with these secondaries... They're not going to be counting characters, but they WILL notice if it seems like you're stretching out things that don't need to be or cramming things that could have been expanded. Good luck!

How long did it take for you guys to be complete? I submitted on July 22, all materials are in but I'm still not complete...

Noticed that I was "marked complete date not available" until today.. Now it says I was complete mid July. Progress?! Lol

Same! Haha someone had a theory that that meant an II was imminent. I really hope that's true.
