2015-2016 Case Western Reserve University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
How many of you guys applied here without research? To the regular MD, University Track.

I thought cleveland clinic was just for the other cclm students?

Nope, CWRU students can do their clinical rotations there.

I thought that UT students could do clerkships at CC, but I could definitely be wrong about that. I know the nursing students do their clinicals at both UH and CC, so I feel like it'd be weird if the med students didn't also.

Both University Track and CCLCM students can do rotations at any of the four hospitals: CCF, UH, VA, MetroHealth, since after all, we're technically all CWRU students. This is important because the different hospitals have different strengths. That being said, if a specific site is too popular for a given clinical rotation, you might not end up getting it.

For the research essay, what do you guys think about using phasing like "I studied". The prompt ask to describe "your research" so I feel like saying "my research group studied" makes it sound like I wasn't that involved/responsible. However, "I" just seems kind of cocky, as though I single-handedly did everything...or maybe I'm just overthinking this.

It is fine to just say "The aim of this study was" or "We investigated" etc. Using "we" is actually quite commonplace in research articles so don't worry about the perception.

Here is word for word how I said it: "With the help of my PI, I designed a research study to investigate.."

This can be challenging since you simultaneously need to be explicit about what your involvement was (rather than just describing the lab's research) while not sounding too cocky, as you said. I think you should be fine as long as you give credit where credit is due, but make sure to include your intellectual contribution. If it just reads like an abstract copied from a paper and it's not clear that you weren't only washing test tubes, then it can be a problem.

I have minimal research, one summer of ecology research that I'm doing right now. I'm afraid that is what's gonna kill my app here =/

Better than me, I have none.

I applied to this as a reach school, mainly because of this. My MCAT is also equivalent to one point below their mean on the old one. We'll see. Best of luck

So how does hosting work? When I log into the portal and select a date, no host names show up. Does that mean there are simply no hosts for that day?

This is my last secondary left to do (that I have, Vandy seems like a bust), and wow did I save the heaviest one for last. Kudos to you guys for getting it turned around so quickly.

Vandy is an AWESOME school. Totally worth the secondary IMO, I would love to get an II there just to actually see the campus.

Edit: It also saves a bunch of time if you're applying to UCSD as well, since their autobiography prompts are extremely similar.

I submitted 7/10 and my app status is still SUBMITTED INCLUDING PAYMENT. Is this the default status or should it say something like "complete"? All my letters and scores have been in since the end of June.

On my page, there is a line that says "Marked Completed" and then Yes (date) next to it.

Any idea when the first CCLCM IIs came out last year? Do they tend to come later than UT invites?

Just got rejected for College Track at CCLCM, was a few points below their MCAT mean so I can't be too upset. Still in the running for UT. Bummer...

Because I'm sure it will be asked, complete mid July.

When I called their admissions, it's between 36-37 for last year's class

Sorry to hear about the CT rejections, but at least you guys still have a chance for UT! I wonder if they've started sending out those rejections as well.

For the people rejected by CCLM, when were you complete?

Also, sorry to hear about the rejections =( I'm sure you'll find a better fit!

July 15th. I thought the clinician-investigator focus resonated quite strongly with my application, guess that's why it hurts a lot more than other rejections. :|

Damn they passed me over lol. Thanks though!

Doesn't necessarily mean anything. My II came almost a month after my complete date, and many people who'd submitted after me got IIs before me. Definitely not a linear process.

It's not over til the rejection.

Good to know! I was complete a month ago and still no II! I am really hoping for one because of their amazing research program!!

I GOT THAT SAME EMAIL.

Thank you for the heart attack CWRU. Jesus.

I came here just to see if it was only me.

Then my crazy paranoid premed mind was like "maybe they send these to people that aren't quite up to their med school program" ahaha.

:boom:

EDIT: This disclaimer at the bottom makes me feel better about receiving it: "You are receiving this e-mail because you opted-in to the MCAT Search Service."
