2015-2016 Medical College of Wisconsin Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So.. is anyone's application actually complete here yet? My application still says 1/2 even though I"ve sent letters to all of them

Nope, but it takes a bit of time for schools in general to handle the initial flood of applications and for updating their online systems to reflect file completion.

I emailed the school about 7 hours ago (no response), and just called them and no answer. What gives?

I think we have to keep in mind every school is probably dealing with a crazy amount of apps and students asking them questions

True. I thought they'd at least answer the phone though :/ .

Some schools do seem spotty with picking up the phone. There was one that everyone said had great support from the admissions office, but I called three separate times and never got an answer. So your experience could be due to calling during a busy time or something of that nature.

wait what? how many essays do we need to write for this school? My secondary application only has "Why MCW? (1000 character limit)" prompt.

nvm. got it figured out. What are you guys' reasons for applying to regional campuses? just out of curiosity.

Does it say they havent received an MCAT score for anyone else? I took mine in May so it was a bit late, but it should have sent with my AMCAS right?

Same here, submitted the secondary on 7/5 and had all letters in by AMCAS verification on 6/5 and it still says my application is 1/2 complete.

I thought I was the only one but my recommendation letters have not been received yet ! Lol

How long after submitting the secondary did they mark your letters as received?

- never mind didn't read everyone's posts lol

Nope, at least not yet. I just kept checking their website every morning. Today was the special day I guess.
I just checked and it says that they received mine. I think everyone should be okay now. Just re-check again guys !

My letters are not received. Assigned them on 6/30, secondary complete 7/6.

Edit: not that it matters what happened with my letters specifically. I'm just posting for the sake of others who may have been complete on 7/6 and don't show letters as received in the portal (hopefully I'm not the only one!).

I think this school has a new admissions director. That may be the reason for some of the problems thus far.

Just checked, my letters are marked as received. no email. submitted 7/12

😕 Thanks for the update @RudyRude. I just checked...please tell me there are others in this thread who submitted earlier than 7/12 and don't have their letters marked as received...

My secondary was submitted on the 7th and still no letters. I will give them a few more days before contacting them to ask them to check.

For those who have letters received, did you have a letter packet or committee letter? Individual letters? If using individual letters, did you add any optional letters beyond the required two?

I had 4 total individual letters and mine are all received.

I have the same problem as everyone else. Submitted 7/5 and still waiting for my letters to be received 🙁

@eptp

From the website...
"we prepare medical students to become the best physicians of tomorrow with a spirit of continuous learning and the skills to adapt to whatever may come next in medical discoveries and best practices, as well as in the business side of practicing medicine. Tomorrow’s healthcare starts here, at MCW, where the student experience balances the latest technology and team-based learning models with more than a century of rich medical education traditions. An MCW medical education is a life-changing journey for our students, and for the patients whose lives they touch."

Regarding the bolded portion, how does MCW accomplish this? Is it something the school prides itself on?

Submitted 7/12, saw that at least one of my letters was received today (could have been marked earlier, I haven't been checking too much).

@lost_enthusiast, have your letters all been in since 7/12?

When do you guys think we should call? Complete since 7/6, zero letters received. All were available/assigned to MCW when AMCAS was transmitted on 7/1.

Everything was assigned and available since day 1. Although like I said it seems that I only have one letter listed as received... but at least its 2/2 on the status page.

I made a huge stupid error and emailed the school... Has anyone else had to email the school before about something? Any idea on how long they take to respond? It's been like two days, so... Meh.

I submitted on July 2nd and they say they have neither my LORs (uploaded to amcas in late June, every other school has them except for Yale) nor my MCAT score (May 22nd).

Submitted 7/2, still no LORs. I'm assuming they're just taking a while to get them uploaded since it seems like everyone is having this problem.

just submitted my secondary and i have the same "no rec letter" issue but I submitted my rec letters to AMCAS over a week ago.

I'm curious about this as well...This seems like a pretty unique statement for them to make.

Submitted a couple weeks ago and still no LORs. No worries, I'm sure they'll get the ball rolling since everyone seems to be having this problem.

Can anyone help me out with getting some insight into the three-year programs? I have been scouring the website but can't seem to find the answers to basic questions like how many seats are available in each program, are you restricted in what residencies you can seek (either subject matter or location), etc.? Have any classes from the three-year programs matched yet, and how did their match list look?

Hi Bumblebee,

I'm an M1 in the first class at MCW Green Bay. We are the first of the two regional campuses. The second is opening fall 2016, so you can apply to either location. I don't know about Central Wisconsin, but Green Bay's first class is 26 students (more than 2000 applied). I believe the next class will be a similar size.

You are not restricted in residency options, per se. Obviously, nobody has matched yet, as we only just got started 3 weeks ago! This campus doesn't have any research programs. Because we are a three year program, some of the optional (sometimes used as "vacation") rotations have been eliminated. The general emphasis is to train physicians who want to stay in the area and fill projected shortages of doctors in primary care areas. We have been told that if we get to our third year, and we don't want to submit our residency applications, we can choose to take a 4th year down in Milwaukee, for extra rotations, research, etc... I think most of our class, at the moment, doesn't anticipate utilizing that option.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask or PM me.

Hi Mr./Ms. Cheese - Thanks so much for the info. That is really helpful. I have shown a lot of engagement with underserved communities but I have never lived in Wisconsin (though I have visited!) and most of my service to the underserved relates to urban populations. I don't think I could convince anyone that I really intended to spend my life in Wisconsin and serve underserved rural folks--I just have way too many ties to the coasts for it to be a long-term option for me. Do you think it's worth a try anyway? I figure with this 3 year thing they HAVE to be open to us old folks ....

All of our class are WI natives, WI residents or have significant ties to WI or neighboring states. We do have several older students at least 5ish years out of undergrad. Don't know how 'old' you mean! If you feel like the 3 year option really suits you, it's worth a (long?) shot.
