2015-2016 Oregon Health & Sciences University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Has anyone that has gotten an interview this cycle also previously been on the hold for an interview? The pre interview hold portal message is hard to interpret, until all applicants have been reviewed only then is the pre interview hold pool given a potential chance at an interview? Best of luck to everyone! And reapply if it doesn't work out this cycle! I'm aiming for that.

For any of you who have waited at least 12 weeks and are still not complete, I would give the admissions office a call. I submitted my secondary on 8/27 and when I called today to see why it wasn't complete I was told all the august secondaries had already been reviewed and that mine was "accidentally missed." :bored:

Hi guys,

I am new to SDN, but have been reading your posts for a long time. I submitted my application mid August and was marked as complete 9/4 (right when they received my green card) I have been completed since then, no other actions on my portal.
It has been 18 weeks since that happen and I am considering calling them to check on the application and what is going on (afraid they "accidentally misses it"). So my question is what number did you call to check on your status?

Thanks!

I was put on pre-interview hold last year, and ended up receiving an interview in the spring. There is still hope for interview. Good luck!

Hey everyone - long-time lurker, first time poster. I'm applying to OHSU as an in-state resident to the MD/MPH but still haven't heard back. My file wasn't complete for the longest time because of some unfortunate delays and I ended up getting everything completed a few months behind everyone else. I'm trying to remain hopeful, and I heard somewhere that all of the MD/MPH interviews are done in the spring. Does anyone know if that's true? I know last year there were a few in March.

Good luck to everyone!

It kind of seems like that is more of the trend from last year's thread

A couple quick question:
1. If I'm "on hold" is there any chance I will hear before April 30th?
2. Does anyone know what percentage/how many people get put on hold that were interviewed? Thank you in advance!

1. Yes
2. 60-80% iirc the info from interview day

1. Yes! My friends at OHSU heard the beginning of April (instead of the 30th, not great but still a little better)
2. Talked with a few doctors that work at OHSU, they have said in recent years it's closer to 80% are put in the hold pool at some point in time. During my interview, they said it will be 80% or higher this year.

It's been asked a couple times, but does anyone know if OHSU accepts update letters (especially for those of us on hold?)

They don't accept updates before the interview I believe. I think you can send updates when you are getting an interview set up and possibly after, couldn't hurt to try. Everyone from admissions is super nice.

On the admissions portal:

Please note that further updates will not reopen your file or change the committee's decision.

Right, that seems to apply to people that already have a decision made, which to me wouldn't include hold. Basically saying they don't change rejections.

"your file has been screened and is currently on hold for an interview, pending further review"

One would assume more info for their further review would be a good thing...but then again admissions process isn't always exactly rational

During my interview day, they explained that you actually become a score made up of 20% initial application 40% MMI and 40% one on one interview. They said that updates wouldn't change the score, and the score determines if you're admitted.

We are talking pre-II hold - so that doesn't really apply, but good info to have!

Placed on hold today via portal (no email received). Interviewed on 11/4

Thank you!

Does getting into the hold pool sooner rather than later even improve chances then? I interviewed in October and was put on hold the week or two afterwards (not sure if that's good or bad). I was excited to be done in October, but it seems if they interview everyone before making these decisions there was no benefit to going early?

Same boat! I was excited as well to interview early but waiting 6 months not so much haha

Does anyone know the date when they will give out final waitlist numbers and acceptances/rejections for this year? Last year was the first week of May if I recall correctly.

I think they said late April

^ I'm reading it that non-mission groups will be evaluated starting in February.

But yeah, definitely used to be January. I guess they're swamped?

I think that happens to match with what it says for the mission-groups pre-II holds, which is by Feb

Hey guys any tips for the MMI, besides the UW page. I'm worried about talking for that length of time for each interview?...8 minutes seems so long

As crazy as it might sound, the eight minutes do fly by in most of the scenarios! The interviewers, for the most part, are good about keeping the conversation moving.

The eight minutes do pass really fast. I watched all of the MMI Course Grinder videos on YouTube to help myself feel more prepared. In the end, they didn't really help me in the actual MMI, but they did help to put my mind at ease because I felt like I was preparing myself in some way. There isn't much that you can do to prepare yourself for the MMI--it's best to just answer honestly and be yourself. Good luck!
