2015-2016 Stanford University Application Thread

So for Q13, if we have publications that are accepted but not published or e-published yet do we have to exclude them? I have one that was recently accepted at a really good journal and don't want to exclude it but lord knows how long it will take them to actually get it out there.

Include it! Putting "(Accepted)" at the end of the citation would be a clear indication of the status of your publication.

It's included in my AMCAS, but the part in the question that made me second guess myself was the "searchable in pubmed" phrase. I'm probably overthinking, not like I'm gonna get in to Stanford anyway 😛

I am 3rd author on a paper under review right now. When I talked to my PI, he said that its common for people to cite the paper on their CV and write (under review). Do you think that would be acceptable? I know it says "don't include unpublished papers" but technically accepted papers are unpublished. (i know im splitting hairs here)
Yeah but accepted papers are going to be published for sure. Under review doesn't mean anything b/c anyone can submit a paper and have it be reviewed. CVs are one thing; the app is another, methinks

But for most journals, after a paper is submitted they read over it quickly to see if its applicable to the journal. If it passes that (which it did) then we got assigned a reviewer. I mean yeah obviously there is a chance that it won't get accepted, but it's more than just me writing some nonsense and then submitting it to Nature just so I could put it on my resume (submitted v. under review). I understand your point though. I'll just email them and see what they say.

Sure but IME the bar is not that high get past, especially if it's not a top top journal.

I think the real bar is getting accepted though, hence the difference. I mean this other postdoc in my lab submitted to nature biotech and the paper got rejected in 4 days because it didnt pass their bar. the journal we're submitting to is one of the cell journals.

Also, liking the dratini pic.

No screening for secondary and still haven't got it!! Even wrote to the admissions, but no reply. Wondering if they are this slow usually..

sup.

anyway back on topic. how big of a difference do you feel will make my application for stanford then? I mean, i have 4400 hours of total lab time in these 2 labs, 3 national posters, and then this 3rd author paper under review? i hope they see i can contribute to their research community.
Nice Charmander! (I'll note that Dragon-type is 0.5x resistant against Fire-types 😛)

I don't think it'll hurt you to put it. At worst it'll be ignored but if noticed, yes, it shows you're still involved in the research which is good. Either way, 4000+ hours is quite enough to show you're a researcher dude

You don't need papers to stand out in research. Do not become overly focused on this, including MSTP applicants.

Thanks! You should join in on this. I'm trying to get people to have Pokémon pics so we can evolve when we're accepted, and then maybe evolve again at matriculation! Do it with me!

There are so many of us!!

Love this idea, I'm joining in as well haha

Awesome selection. I thought about going that route too but I wanted to be Dragonite wayyyyy more than Raichu 😛

I'm totally joining in. Dragonite is my favorite Pokemon, but since you're already using Dratini, I went with Eevee. (Hopefully I will have as many choices for schools as there are Eeveelutions...)

Do we have to waive our right to read our application after matriculation? I already waived LOR rights but I don't see a reason to not be able to see the rest of my application if I matriculate to Stanford. It's my stuff, isn't it?

That's what I figured....but got some feedback about waiving it...at the end of the day...meh...whatever?

i'm hella paranoid that i misclicked something on their survey lol

Is anyone else finding themselves basically rewriting their personal statement for the diversity essay?

Nope! Working on it right now and I'm going on about a hobby of mine. So your diversity pitch is also medically focused?

I'm SES so inevitably going to talk about my motivation for medicine derived from background and experiences. Meh, not particularly optimistic for Stanford anyway, but good luck to you!

So you are personally Socioeconomic Status? 😛
Thanks! You too. Everyone is represented at these places so you never know

Hi All,

I'm a Canadian student who grew up in Palo alto and would love to attend SMS. I'm not really familiar with the American admission process, but I understand that as Stanford does rolling admissions, I should try and get my application in ASAP. Unfortunately, my MCAT date is on Aug 6, should I even bother applying?

I've also recently had a paper (first author) accepted pending further revisions by Circulation (IF~15, so relatively prestigious). It will take a few weeks before I can complete the revision for acceptance, so I was wondering if I should hold off on my application until it's accepted. I'm not sure what the risk/ benefits are of having another pub but possibly applying even later. Would appreciate advice!

So when you get into medical school and evolve into pikachu, are you going to actively avoid going into residency even though Chief of Medicine Surge's resident raichu maimed you during your electrophysiology elective?😛

Is there maybe a current MSTP student lurking here that could tell me how they like the program? I'm curious how the work/life balance is, especially since they expect you to finish your PhD in three years

Joining in on this. Ultimate goal is neurology so it is fitting. 🙂

Yeah me neither! I'm a Canadian applicant though I wonder if that makes a difference. Let me know if they reply to you!

Guys my primary was verified on 6/08, but I only added Stanford to my primary on 7/15... is it normal to not have a secondary yet?

Welcome to the family!! You're twins with @jagster92 😀 Both of you found pretty cute pics of Abra, I must say
P.S. Duplicate Pokemon are totally allowed as long as the pictures are different!

We should have a thread for us Pokemon applicants, haha.

ahhhh. now I don't know whether to call or not. I guess I could try. It can't hurt anyways. Thank guys for your input

i called them today they said some weird stuff that im too tired to make sense of but something along the lines of how some applications get randomly flagged by their system and they have to manually send those people secondaries and that the guy just got back from vacation and the city he stayed in was really hot.
thanks lol🙂

Submitted today! No complete email but my application status says I'm complete so I'll assume that's it! We'll see if I get to visit SF for the first time!

Circulation is big, so congrats! But don't expect people outside of cards to necessarily know how it compares to JACC, Heart, etc. (Actually, the newest IFs show that JACC>Circulation, but those who work in cards know that's BS.) However, accepted pending revisions is NOT a guarantee of acceptance, so you should put it but be clear about its status. No need to wait because it's not make or break.

Overall, though, you'll be complete in mid-Sept after your MCAT scores are in, which is late, but not killer. Are you applying to other U.S. schools? If you're planning on filling out AMCAS anyway, sure, add Stanford and see what happens. If you're considering filling out that entire monster just for Stanford, only do it if you have the time to spare. More important is to really do well on your MCAT so your late application will catch people's eyes. It's tough, I know, but those are your options!

congrats! i could show you around 🙂. im almost done with this app. im still mulling over the "why are you suited for this practice scenario" though. i mean should i just list things that i learned, or should i go more into my research? idk

Deal! If I visit then we're meeting up 👍

I'd stick to just the things you learned. That's what the question's asking. If you have an idea of future directions, sprinkle that in as well.

I decided not to continue my application to the school. Mostly financial reasons and stats reasons. Do I have to withdraw or anything? I started my secondary, but it's not completed/submitted. I know my letters are in. Do I just leave it alone?

So sad to see you leave!! 🙁 You just don't fill it out. You can just ignore the reminder emails they'll send about completing the secondary. I believe all incomplete app data is deleted after the secondary deadline.

Best of luck in your other applications!

Thanks! I just made my primary very specific to one school and I'm realizing this is polar opposite almost. I have no idea how to approach this secondary without seeming two-faced about my intentions...if that makes sense. Plus my stats are super low for this school! lol dream reach for sure!

Yeah, the secondary makes it very clear the type of people Stanford's looking for. It's so interesting that they removed "private practice" as a practice scenario choice this year! :O Are they not even interested in having a portion of their class just be regular non-primary care physicians at all?? :O

Why did you make your primary so one-sided? Are you applying to all the same type of school? What angle are you coming at it from?

Truly private practices in general are disappearing and more and more new doctors are becoming employee physicians. I guess they're going off the trends.

Yeah of course but there isn't even a "regular doctor at a hospital" choice. It's like academic medicine or primary care only, which doesn't cover the majority of the population I'm referring to. Ah, Stanford... 😍
