2015-2016 Texas Tech University - El Paso Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm skeptical to fill out the secondary as they only took 2 OOS students each of the past two years. The odds just seem horrific, especially with how many people they interview. What were your thought processes in applying for OOS people?

Are you perhaps confusing matriculation numbers with acceptance numbers? I would guess that they gave out more acceptances than 2, but that (for whatever reason) only 2 of the people accepted chose to matriculate.

I'm an OOS with an interview here. I applied because I had heard rave reviews of their curriculum (justified, after what I saw on interview day), and the cost to apply wasn't very high compared to other places. I wasn't expecting to get an interview since I have no ties to west Texas, so it was a pleasant surprise when one arrived.

Hey everybody, I have a couple quick questions. I interviewed here 9/17, and I'm a little bit worried because this school hasn't shown up on the TMDSAS school rank preference. It says on there that there may be a delay between your interview and when the list is updated, but it just seems to be taking a while. I bet that I'm just being neurotic, but I can't help worrying. Has anyone had this school added on their school preference list? Also I got a letter in the mail from them basically just saying that they hope I enjoyed my interview day. Is that par for the course for this school, or does it mean anything?

I'm OOS so I don't have to deal with the ranking, but I did receive this letter. I thought for a moment that it was a rejection letter. Had to read it a couple of times to make sure that it really was just saying that they hoped I enjoyed the interview day. Glad to hear someone else got the same message!

Me too! Haha but dang, I thought that the letter might mean something good

Just wait, it will update before the deadline. It took UT Austin 6 weeks to update my portal, and it took UT Houston 1 month. I think PLFSOM took around 3-4 weeks as well. If it hasn't updated by January then I would start making phone calls. Also, I'm pretty sure all of the interviewees get the same letter.

Anything I should know before the interview?? Just want to calm my nerves since I've never been to this part of Texas.

There's another one on 11/5
Ah good to know. Guess it's too late for changing it now hah. Oh well. October 29th seems like as good a day as any. Congrats to you as well btw Almond2 for getting an invite. Best of luck to ya

I would Google attractions and the such around El Paso, as they WILL ask you about how you think you would like it, trying to see if you could enjoy living there. El Paso is a GREAT city for outdoorsy people, great for hiking, biking, and just fun in the sun (300 sunny days a year). There's A TON of history in the area, and places like White Sands and Ruidoso make for great day/weekend trips. As for the nerves, RELAX. El Paso unfairly gets a bad rep due to its proximity to Juarez, but it's a VERY safe city, and people are generally really nice.

I read it at least ten times trying to read between the lines to see if it was a rejection. Glad to know I'm not the only one freaking out. 9 days for us!

If we interview here on 10/29 or 11/5, how likely is it that we will still be eligible for prematch? Is it too late?

My friend got prematched in december last year like the day after her interview so I would say never too late!

El paso show me some love:biglove: Complete since late June....🤔

Have you gotten any IIs yet?

Did anyone else get a mini heart attack when they got a letter from this school? I remember seeing people say thin ones are always bad because they usually indicate rejection. I swear my heart was sinking when I saw the flimsy envelope but turns out it was just a thanks for visiting letter. -_-
Nov 15 can't come soon enough.

Just got my interview for November 12th, anyone else going to be there that day? Anyone doing the meet and greet the day prior?
Congrats!! When were you complete?

Does anyone know off top how many students they will be accepting this year? I went to check MSAR and unfortunately its down right now and has been for a bit. Also, the PFSOM website statistics page doesn't say how many students they accept now, only in 2013 (which was 100 students). I wasn't sure if they had increased the number or not. Thanks for any input.

The dean of admissions said during my interview day that their max is actually 100 students, but they tend to go over a little bit. I believe they said that the 2015 entering class is 104, but someone feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

Hey guys, so I completed my secondary app for El Paso 07/09. I still have not heard from them. I have a 65 LizzyM. Is there still hope for me to get an II?

If you look a few posts back, they are considering applications from as early as May, so you never know! Keep the faith! Your LizzyM is right around their average matriculant, but I think they really take a look at the whole applicant. If the rest of your app is strong, I wouldn't be surprised if you hear from them!

Thank you so much. It is always nice to hear positive things!!

Anyone know when the latest date to hear from schools would be for this cycle? I know prior posts say plfsom has filled up to mid november and I'm assuming they interview up to mid-december. Does this mean only a few weeks left to receive IIs?

Can any current med students comment on receiving IIs late and still being accepted here please?

Btw has anyone ever contacted the Admissions Office and actually spoke with someone? I have called numerous times in the past AND today but anytime I try to connect with one of the operatives, it goes straight to voice-mail.

I spent two weeks, every day, trying to get someone on the phone. I ended up speaking with an administrator, and about 1-2 weeks later I received my interview invitation. So just keep it up!

The main Admissions office contact is a portal that you then have your call directed to. There are several directors on the options. Which one(s) did you select?

Literally every extension. I would call back and repeat.. I would start with 1, no answer? Call back and try 2.. And so forth.. For two weeks until I spoke to someone!

For anybody that interviewed here - was the interview day itself organized?
