2015-2016 University of Cincinnati Application Thread

Damn, alternate list. It is like the universe is going to force me to stay in-state.

I figured since most of us probably all have the same questions, this will be helpful. Parental information is required for the FAFSA if you are filing as a dependent.
Thanks for sharing this. It's also worth noting that if you aren't a dependent and have a spouse, regardless if you file your taxes jointly or separately, you need to disclose their info too.

Just wondering, after sending in a post-interview update, should I be expecting an email confirming that the admissions office received it? Thanks!

FYI for anyone still waiting for an interview - the last day offered is January 27th.

Hey guys - when is the background check stuff actually due? I have to submit a dispute because the peeps swapped up some of my address stuff and it could take up to 3 weeks. Just want to make sure I'm not missing any deadlines!

At my interview two weeks ago, we were told interviews were only going through January.

Hey, did they tell you when you'd get a decision? They recently told Dec18 ppl that we wouldn't hear until the last week in February. Just wondering where that puts the timeline for interviews after Dec 18

Last year they interviewed through March so I doubt that's true.

I think they have a much different interview schedule than last year. When I interviewed, they said that the last two dates offered for interviews were January 15th and January 27th. I was quite surprised.

We were told that the committee was fairly backlogged due to the holidays and it would be at least 4 weeks before we heard anything. When did the admissions office let you guys know you wouldn't hear until the end of February?

Last week on Tuesday. They said the last Friday in February is when we'll get a decision which will be close to 11weeks post interview for us

I interviewed last week and they said that we'd most likely hear back around the second week of February. Hopefully that means that you'll find out then also instead of waiting until almost March!

See that's what I was hoping lol thank you! Because like 3 friends I interviewed with back in December all texted me IN SHOCK about that timeline. Maybe they meant last Friday in January I hope

For me, it was actually in the CARE/Crawley building

That makes more sense. I was just basing it off the travel info they have on their website:

Travel Information
Driving Directions & Parking
If you are traveling by plane, the airport is in Northern Kentucky; you should allow a minimum of two hours to travel to the College of Medicine. Allow yourself plenty of time so you will not be rushed. There are two transportation services from the airport to the College of Medicine: Airport Executive Shuttle—800-990-8841, and AAA Yellow cab—513-821-8294.

Overnight Accommodations
The UC medical campus has two hotels within walking distance of the Medical Sciences Building:

I have a friend who interviewed then Dec. 18 and received the same email. He's hoping that they meant the last week of January and not February. Hopefully that's true and you all will find out next Thursday! It really seems such a long time to wait and doesn't seem to match up with the other interview notification dates.

Also interviewed Dec 18th. Just called the admissions office and the woman I spoke to said it must have been a typo and that Friday the last week of January is when we should be hearing back. She was really nice and kept apologizing for it! I'm so glad we might not have to wait til the end of February!!

Omg That's such a relief!!! Thank you

Any current students who could speak to community service/public health opportunities ?

This might be an obvious question lol, but could anyone please confirm that the check-in location for the interview day is just the Admissions Office (Medical Sciences Building, Suite E-450)?

Check-in is in the lobby of the CARE/Crawley Building. Good luck!!

We have many options to get involved with community service in a medical capacity, which is a great opportunity to reinforce the clinical skills we learn every week and put them to practice.
  • Medical Volunteers of Cincinnati has clinics twice weekly at homeless shelters where students work as part of a team to provide basic health care
  • UC Open School is a similar opportunity to work as part of an interprofessional team providing care at the St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry on Saturday mornings
  • Urban Health Project is an 8 week summer internship with a variety of opportunities to work with clinics, shelters, and social service agencies.
  • Racetrack Clinic is a seasonal free clinic run at a nearby racetrack to provide care for the workers.
We also have a program called Med Mentors, where students are paired up with elementary school kids for 1-2 years to help them with school work and just hang out with mentees as a role model and additional support. If you are interested in working with children there are other opportunities with lower commitment levels including tutoring or volunteering at the Ronald McDonald house next to Childrens Hospital, and this year we have had some additional opportunities with the organization A Kid Again.

Finally if you are interested in global health, one of our UCCOM alums founded the Village Life Outreach Project which takes students every summer to rural Tanzania working on projects including providing care at the Health Center or mobile clinics, distributing mosquito nets, working with engineering students to build a school, water filtration and nutrition programs for school children.

This list is probably not comprehensive but clearly there are plenty of opportunities with a variety of time commitments.

This is great, thanks so much!

to follow up - i know cinci doesn't have an md/mph dual degree program, but do you know of any students who take a year off and pursue an MPH?

I'm only an M1 so I don't personally know anyone who is planning on it as of right now, but I know it's possible.

Does it bother anyone else how NOBODY is posting or responding on the Facebook group? All my other schools are super active on theirs! I think maybe I'm just a little over eager about meeting people and learning about Cincinnati and what not.

I'm gonna head down to Cincinnati over spring break to look at apartments, so I'll possibly be posting around then looking for roommates. Still haven't decided if I want to live alone or not, though.

Haha I know I posted something and got one response

Congrats to all of those accepted! Does anyone have a checklist of things that need to be done pre-matriculation? Just financial aid papers, immunizations, and transcripts correct?

If anyone else on here is deciding between UC med school and OSU message me 🙂!

Doing interview reviews: Not a fan of MMI. Beautiful buildings. Prestigious Pediatric hospital. Great quality of education. The Starbucks was tucked away in one of the hospitals and I was not allowed entry without some keycard while most hospitals in America allow access to food and coffee for general public?? (I drink lots of coffee, specifically Starbucks). They were very vague about end time, which left me with 7 hours to waste in the airport since I was in the 7:30 AM group. Cincinnati as a city was kind of Ehhh. This is the most expensive city in the country to book a flight to.

Grade: C

fyi, DAY has competitive air fares and depending on the time of day might not take too much longer to get to SOM and departing DAY is significantly easier for your return flight. The bad news for both airports though is getting to from UCSOM features congested traffic often times including significant delays.

As soon as I woke up I saw that I had an email from Cincinnati that had "Congratulations" in the preview and in my half-asleep state I was like "whaaa scholarship???" but no, they were just telling me to start the financial aid process.

I feel your pain on the coffee struggles. This may be irrelevant to your interview day experience, but the good news is that the Starbucks just down the hall from MSB next to the hospital cafeteria just very recently reopened following an expansion! No key card needed and very convenient for study breaks 🙂

Great to hear your opinion! Hope you get a chance to come back sometime and explore the city. We have plenty of events and activities to choose from on our free weekends.

The new starbucks sounds pretty awesome, I guess I was kind of bitter on my day since my hotel coffee was pretty bad and couldn't get my morning ice coffee. I take coffee very seriously haha. I would definitely like to come back and explore sometime, but let's just say I will be driving and not flying haha 😉
