2015-2016 University of Iowa (Carver) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
There's a draft of the schedule on ICON under Get Acquainted Day 2016.
For some reason I'm getting an error page when I try to pull it up ! If there's any way someone could attach it that would be great ! Looking forward to meeting all of you 🙂

Can't go myself, but hopefully you guys can share anything interesting you learn!

Anybody know what the deal is with waitlist movement? IS has only moved 1 spot since it started. Seems a lot slower than previous years...

Yup, you're correct, it is slower thus far compared to last year. Consider this the off season though; the on season for waitlist movement is May and June. The classes get shuffled across the country starting April 30th, so as tough as it is (especially being in the 20s, I feel your pain) it's best to try and distract yourself till April 30th because you're just gonna unnecessarily stress yourself out with speculation. Realistically, an acceptance at your position pry wouldn't roll though till Mid-May at the earliest. I'll totally split the anxiety with you come the on season though. WL solidarity

Those going to Get Acquainted Day, did you get a confirmation or any email communication recently? I swear I signed up, but have a weird feeling like I should have heard something more.

The only email I got was a reminder email from Apr 4th!

Anyone care to comment on how Get Acquainted Day went? Anything good or bad you learned?

-Plethora of opportunities for global health exposure, research, etc.
-M4s who had matched said program directors held education at Carver in "high regards," and that it was a definite plus when applying.
-Showed us a new cyber anatomy program that seemed relatively useful.
-Brand new children's hospital is gonna be DOPE--we saw a couple mock-up rooms and they were pretty cool.
-Literally every person I met was so nice to me. It was refreshing.

Didn't really learn anything bad. Parking sucks? One thing I guess is that Iowa is not the most diverse place, though I feel like that's obvious because, well, it's Iowa.
Overall it was a solid weekend, and nightlife in Iowa City is even more awesome than I could have imagined. The pre-M1s who went there for undergrad or were from the area and took us downtown were some super cool peeps.
I was between Carver and a couple other schools, but I think this weekend really convinced me that Iowa is where I belong. Definitely looking forward to this class.

Withdrew today, OOS. Good luck to everyone still waiting to hear back!!

Congrats on your acceptance and thanks for the good luck wishes 🙂

Would you mind (if comfortable) sharing what WL position you started and ended at?

sorry I should have specified -- I was accepted back in January and withdrew.

Hello fellow future Iowans. I'm looking for a roommate to share rent on a spacious 2 story townhouse about 10-15 minutes from campus ($650 all utilities included)

1400 Sq feet-2BD
Upper level
- bedroom(2)
- bathroom (1)
- kitchen
- living room

Lower level
- garage access
- utility room (wash/dry)
- large study room which can fit 2 study areas.

I'm OOS from cali and I secured this location because it's pet friendly (I have hypoallergenic dog- house broken).

If you're interested, email me and we'll talk.

[email protected]

OOS has moved 13
well... the movement on the OOS list kinda depends on where you rank on the list, if you rank towards the top you may not see as much movement as those who are towards the bottom of the list.

Just withdrew my IS acceptance. Good luck waitlisters, movement will start happening soon!

Here is a random question-- Does anyone know how the grading system works at Iowa? I have heard a few different things, actually from two different students. First I heard that it was something like Honors/High Pass/ Pass/ Fail with only a certain percentage able to earn Honors and High Pass. Then I heard there is no limit to how many students can be in each category (technically the whole class could get honors). According to this person, in order to show how a student did relative to the rest of the class, what gets reported on residency applications is the student's grade and then how many other students fell in each of the grade categories.

Can anyone clarify?

I had seen this in the handbook, but not sure how current it is ...

Scholastic performance in all required courses or clerkships is generally recorded as follows: Honors (“H”); Near Honors (“H–”); Pass (“P”); and Fail (“F”) ....
General guidelines provided to the course directors and faculty suggests that the percentage of students achieving Honors or Near Honors as a final grade in a given course be limited to approximately 40%.

Just withdrew my IS acceptance as well!

Also withdrew, OOS for me. I sent an email, but then they asked that I also withdraw on the portal as well, so I did both.

Sad to let this one go, but it was just gonna be way too expensive for me 🙁

anyone have a clue why the IS alternate list has only moved 1 spot since Thursday? imagined there'd be at least some more movement over the weekend than 1 spot
It could depend on where you are on the waitlist...If you are close to the top, most of the movement could be below you and you'd never notice. Sending good vibes!

No one can answer this question beyond a guess. If you want to grasp a straws, maybe they are letting weekend withdrawals accumulate through traffic day (today) and then are sending out a batch of waitlist acceptances this week. Most likely IS acceptees with multiple offers were on top of it and decided their choice before Thursday/decided to stay in state.

Would recommend checking the alt list number less frequently; they don't give acceptances for most alt list page refreshes. Save yourself the anxiety, although I understand that is easier said than done. All the best buddy, I'm on the struggle bus with ya.

Just withdrew today, OOS. Loved Iowa, but it was still too expensive in the end, hope the scholarships go to someone else!

After a lot of contemplation, I have decided to withdraw my IS offer of admission. Best of luck to all of you who will be attending, and I hope my decision brings good news for someone else.

I know it can be hard to predict, but does anybody know how much more WL movement (IS in particular) we can expect to see from this point on?

Anyone accepted off the OOS list yet? Or is it just withdrawals?

Just withdrew from the OOS waitlist after being accepted. I was just notified via email that I had been accepted and had been originally placed 22nd on the OOS waitlist. I am withdrawing in order to attend another University. I loved Iowa Carver and would have been more than happy to attend medical school there.

Congratulations on your acceptance, and thanks for sharing!!! Good to know that they have started offering admissions.

Roll call: who else on here is still waiting on the OOS list?

I am. I will stay on until middle of July (or else I will be sleeping in my car the first weeks of med school).

Hi everyone,

I was just accepted off the waitlist, and was wondering if anyone recently accepted would know how long it would take to get financial aid information. Is there a way to check it?

thanks!
Congrats! IS or OOS?

Thanks! I'm OOS. I was originally 37, so quite surprised there was enough movement for me to be accepted haha
Thanks for the info! Yes, definitely a pleasant surprise--I'm really happy for you 🙂

Anyone here who is going to the U of I need a place to live? I have a 2-bed room house with an extra room. It is about 6 minutes from campus and I need a roommate starting August 1. All utilities included, $650 only, ~1400 sq foot.

Email me at: [email protected]

A plea to my fellow waitlist comrades who have already been accepted elsewhere:

As one of the many who are waitlisted without an acceptance, please don't stay on the waitlist "for science", as one of the waitlisted from the previous year explained (because of course we can't help but but meticulously comb through the previous years' forums).

If you are still seriously considering Iowa, that's totally understandable. But if you're pretty sure you wouldn't go to Iowa if given the offer, please consider those of us who are still waiting on our first (and maybe only) acceptance.

Yours in solidarity,
Hopeful
