2015-2016 University of Iowa (Carver) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Alternate list. Good thing I am day drinking on vacation.

Waitlisted IS, a little above 30. Given historical movement, things aren't looking great...slim chance but anything could happen. Not holding my breath but hoping that means next cycle - should it come to that - will be an acceptance or higher waitlist spot!

For all future applicants: I didn't have the rural tab and was waitlisted. Not having the rural tab is not necessarily indicative of rejection.

Does anybody know if we can still do summer research if we were just accepted yesterday? I would hate to miss this opportunity.

Lol I actually just emailed them about this. The answer I got was that we have missed the application deadline for the formal Summer Research Fellowships, but there may be more funding available after it's all sorted for the first wave. They said that we will be notified if more funding is left over and we can apply at that time

Oh spectacular, I'm glad someone else was thinking about it! 🙂 Thank you for updating me, and congratulations on your acceptance!!:claps:

That's a lot more info than I was given when I emailed! I was just told that there would be another application period for students accepted in March (or later?).

Sure, I don't mind: cGPA ~3.75, MCAT 515. Basically a poster child for the average CCOM matriculant, for better or for worse haha.

I feel like that's a little too impressive for a number of 30 on the IS wait list.. Geez

Are your EC's nothing much or what?

I think I made mistakes on my primary by not showcasing the right activities. Also, my college and college town had very limited pre-medical opportunities, and perhaps I wasn't creative enough with my use of non-academic time. I plan on setting up an appointment with them to identify weaknesses. Who knows, maybe I interview terribly!

Rejected and devastated even though I'm fortunate enough to have acceptances elsewhere. This was my #1 and I want to appeal, but I know they'll just tell me "decisions are final"

Ouch. 3.95 cGPA , 4.0 sGPA and 516 MCAT and I am lower on the wait list. It can be a lot of factors.

Hi all,

Does anyone have any input on what type of laptop/tablet they are getting for next year? Any current students @markyb03 have any input here?

I am split between a new macbook pro or a Surface pro 4.

22nd on the waitlist for OOS.
507, 4.0 unique personal and extra curricular experiences. Best of luck to everyone else out there, it sounds like I may be just outside of the normal range for waitlist movement--but there is a chance!

Any idea when we might hear about financial aid ? specifically for those of us who got in from the final pool

I think you guys might be overemphasizing the importance of your grades and MCAT. Once you are invited to interview, those factors become much less important. Your responses to the interview questions and supplemental application holds much more weight.

and perhaps that group case-learning session too? I'm not sure how much weight they put on that...

Within two weeks of them getting your FAFSA. Did you look at the student records section of ISIS? Mine was processed right on time the first couple days of March, just like they said.

I'm on the IS waitlist, low 20's. cGPA 3.2-3.3, MCAT 31-33. Definitely other factors at play, including essays, interview, etc.

Congrats to everyone that was accepted and waitlisted this week!

I was accepted in early November but will be giving up my spot, so there should be at least a little bit of waitlist movement soon 🙂

Very interesting. Are you a re-applicant? Or are you non-traditional in some way?

I definitely want something I can use a digitizer pen with. I'm looking at the HP Spectre x360 or the Surface pro, but I've never owned anything mac. Have you seen anything about requirements? I'm wondering if we are required to use our own laptops for exams. I don't know how "comfortable" I would be using the Surface Pro 4 for this.

There's a tab on the ICON page with the technical requirements, it mentions that we may be taking tests on our computers. I was looking at the surface book. It's also got a detachable screen/tablet part but I think it feels/looks more like a laptop than a surface pro 4. It is pricier tho...

Tests are taken on personal computers. The students told me almost all of them had a tablet as well. I'd recommend a MacBook Pro - I'll probably purchase a refurbished one and I am also working on building a PC.

Would we need both a laptop and a tablet? I'm using need very loosely there. Mainly looking for an excuse to get an iPad 😉

I'm looking at the HP Spectre also. I've had an HP Envy for 3 years and I love it. Cheap, reliable and with a touch screen. Makes me want to stick with HP. The Spectre has crazy good reviews. I'll probably also by a refurbished iPad Air to use for apps, maybe note taking and entertainment.

From what I read, laptops are mandatory for exams. I'm not sure how loose they are on where the cutoff is. Maybe if you have a tablet well-suited for the task with a keyboard you'd be set, but this wasn't the impression I got. You can find the specs they require on ICON.

Haha I'm not saying that GPA and MCAT are the only factors at play, fellas.. I just feel inadequate when someone with a 3.9 and a 515 is 30 on the IS wait list I guess, and was simply thinking out loud
Trust me, you're not inadequate - this process is just exceedingly humbling. It pretty much took any ego I had, tore it apart, threw it on the ground, stomped on it, and it has not since recovered haha.

Cheers to all the success in this thread, and likewise, cheers to those for whom better things will come! The next cycle is fast-approaching and I remain optimistic. If we're truly resilient, this should be a bug on the windshield. Not getting into med school this cycle pales in comparison to other struggles, many of which we've detailed in our personal statements. Good things don't come easy.

I keep looking on ICON for specs, but can't find it. Where is this at?

Sorry if this has been asked and answered, but does anyone know if merit aid awards have come out? I'm OOS and just got a financial aid package that is probably going to lead to me withdrawing from Carver. I just can't swing the tuition.

I received a mix of aid as an OOS student, so yes. Who knows if that is all of it though?
