2015-2016 University of Iowa (Carver) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just submitted my secondary, only to realize I wrote "Carver Medical School" instead of "Carver College of Medicine" in a couple of my essays. Will this hurt my application?
People have written the name of School Y in their secondaries for School X and gotten in. I'm sure your mistake is viewed much more kindly.

Anyone else struggling with these character limits?!
Yup, had to really whittle down other essays to get it to fit. Just the facts, I guess. Now Miami is on the opposite side - 500 words for essays, sheez.

Yeah, same here. There's so much I'd like to say, but brevity is key. Good luck with Miami.

Btw, I love your quote 😉

That's great to know thank you

Secondary submitted! I'm really in love with this school. Anyone know about upcoming open houses at Carver?

Does anyone know how Iowa grants state residency for admissions purposes? I grew up in Iowa and my parents still live there, but I went away for school so I haven't lived there in almost 5 years. I am claimed on my dads Iowa state taxes, still have a valid IA drivers license, and I'm registered to vote in Iowa. I'm just worried because on the "statement of determination of residency" page, I cannot put any activities having taken place in Iowa, since I've lived elsewhere the past few years.

Is there anyone complete who can tell me how long it took for your app fee to show as completed?

I know it says 5 days, but I never received a receipt from the transaction.

Thanks!

I believe it took one day for me-- I submitted payment either the first or second day.

It took seven days between submission and receiving my complete email. They won't pull your letters until you submit your secondary, so it takes a little while for you to be complete.

Aww man, according to last year's thread it looks like we'll be waiting until late August for the first II's

I realize Iowa gives preference to instate applicants. However, does an Iowa resident attending a different college out of state still receive that preference when applying to Carver? I hope some one can comment on this. Thanks!

If you are claiming Iowa residency, then yes you would receive that preference.

Would attending an out of state college be grounds for losing residency? I've come home every summer and worked in Iowa if that helps.

When they mention "medically related experiences", would I be able to list my public health internship?

I think you would know if you were a resident of a different state.... Are you paying in-state tuition for the out-of-state school you attend? If not, you're still a resident of Iowa.

Nope I'm paying oos tuition. I figured I was still an Iowa resident, just wanted a little input from some other people.

If it is related to medicine yes. But just because it is related to public health does not make it related to medicine.
I did my public health internship participating in a clinical study --> medically related experience
If you did an internship developing a community program that helps provide food for the homeless, that is great, but not medically related and should be listed elsewhere.

Submitted secondary 7/17, received complete email 7/23...OOS

Is teaching health education medically-related? mainly drugs, alcohol, and mental health

Are we just repeating AMCAS experiences on the medically related experiences? Any other ideas for stuff to add? Also, in general, do we think schools that have qs like this are doing this so they can spend less time reading the primary?

It was an internship that examined health outreach and access to breast cancer resources to at-risk communities in the southern region of my state. I helped identify three counties that lack adequate access due to socioeconomic factors and distance from major healthcare facilities.

Thats what I did. Some people added additional info not already in AMCAS but I pretty much covered everything in work and activities and my personal statement already so I just summarized that. I'm guessing they just want a brief summary so that they don't have to go through your entire primary to get what they're looking for.

Personally I would include that! It sounds really similar to mine. Good luck.

Can any current med students speak about their experiences in applying to this school as an OOS applicant?

Would it be questionably ethical to refer to my girlfriend's extended family as my extended family? I intend to make them my in-laws one day!

i was in the same dilemma with my applications. My boyfriend is an M2 at a school to which Im applying and his family also resides near another school that I'm applying too but I did not even mention that relationship or his family as a connection mostly because my parents said mentioning a bf or gf is slightly unprofessional. if she were your fiancé then absolutely!

Looks like I'm going ring shopping then...

Haha. My take on the situation: I think you should claim any connection you have, because family members (immediate, extended or future in-laws) indicate that you have a support system nearby. This reassures med schools that you're not going at it alone and you're more likely to graduate. Also, you can just refer them as "my partner's parents" so you don't have to make it all confusing and hypothetical.

I also received an interview invitation. So excited!
